We have recently completed the 5 day Mae Hong Son Loop tour. From the planning at the start to finish everything went smoothly, many thanks to Mel for her patience as exchanged various emails with her asking her advice and sometimes changing our minds.
Our tour was accompanied by Pat, Mel's partner as our guide and our driver Od.Pat is committed to improving conditions for people in the hill tribes and has a desire to make them more independant.
Pat is also very responsive to the views of the people on the tour, he very quickly realised that we weren't particularly interested in the mass tourist attractions like the Tiger Kingdom and adapted our tour to what we wanted to do.
During the 5 days we did so many things, too numerous to mention them all but for us the highlights were the overnight stay with the hill tribe family, the visit to Lod Cave and a visit to a local school in the hill tribe area. The family we stayed with in the hill tribe were delightful, all their children were lovely and while the accommodation was basic it was clean, fairly comfortable and they did everything to make us feel part of their home.
On our visit to the school we met children from all the different age groups and have encouraged us to set up links with a school I work with in the UK.
As well as the planned visits, lots of random things happened including stopping off at roadside cafe to watching some locals knocking ant's nests out of trees so they can collect the ant's eggs.
Pat was taking pictures throughout the trip and at the end gave us a USB with them all on to take home.
If you want a non-touristy trip seeing so many different things then do this trip, it is something you will never forget and if you have any questions please feel free to contact me
