“Heart of Chiang Mai”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 5, 2013

To me, Tha Phae Gate is the heart of the city. You can find all you want at the surroundings. Cheap accommodation, good food, massage... Meet friends and book buses or tuk tuks to take you to places! Awesome!

“a happening place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 26, 2013

Seems like there's usually some action here-- tourists, maybe vendors, maybe street performers, maybe local kids doing stunts on bikes. It can be a good starting or ending point for a walk on the walking street market

“Center of Tourism in Chiang Mai”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 21, 2013

This isn't so much an attraction in and of itself as it is a plaza or gathering space. Kids practice bike tricks on the pavement and backpackers use the space as a meeting point. This is the sort of "Times Square" of the city on New Year's Eve, Songkran, and other holidays.

“A piece of history”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 18, 2013

This is a special place for its history. It is well preserved and is host to the week end market where you can find all kinds of local foods aswell as foreign food like sushi, but dont eat it remember how far the ocean is. You have been warned.

“Enter the history....”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 26, 2013 via mobile

This gate is the best preserved of all the entry points to the ancient city. The wall defended the locals from attacks by a series of would be conquerors for hundreds of years. Its still standing despite the city being totally abandoned for 150 years after losing to invaders who managed to breach its defences.

The square was transformed for the King's birthday (early Dec) and for the countdown to New Year Eve (Western calendar), lots of food stalls for cheap eats and performances on a big stage. Police enforce a no booze zone.
