After our first day in Chiang Mai we discovered this gate & it became our main route into town. There's plenty going on most nights and it was a great place to spend New Year's Eve with thronging crowds sending thousands of chinese lanterns into the air.

Lots of choices for food & drink of all varieties are in the vicinity so you'll likely find what you want.

The Tha Phae Gate is just the old gate which used to be used when the old quarter (a 1km squared area) was actually walled off. In modern times the old quarter is only seperated from the other areas by a moat, with the walls being disintegrated. This gate is probably the best of whats left that remains but is very unremarkable. I walked past it many times and it did not catch my eye. It is just a collection of bricks and lacks and does little to spike the imagination.

The gate is possibly the busiest link between old and new cities. The night markets essentially start here and go in both directions into each part of the city. Great place for cheapish eats at about THB 40 per dish, and really fun place for people watching.

This gate is probably the most visited gate of the old city among tourists.

It is the centre of our trip for many reasons:
- We stayed at a guesthouse nearby, we walked/drove pass it every day
- We were in Chiang Mai during the King's Birthday celebration on 5 Dec. We bought 2 lanterns from the street vendor at the gate and released them there. A fond memory, especially for the kids.
- We had a delicious rice set as part of our dinner 1 day at the McDonald's nearby.
- It's the beginning of the Sunday Walking Street which we love very much

I like sitting outside Tha Phae gate for some decent people watching. There are some good events that happen in the area but as for the gate, it is interesting to look at but not enough to hold your attention for any long period of time. Just kick back and take it all in.
