“Fabulous 50s American diner decor in the heart of Chaing Mai”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 6, 2012

I don't know how the decor (and music) works in Chiang Mai, but the place sure works as a great breakfast place and coffee/baked good place. My husband's pancakes were declared perfect and my own egg mookmiffin ("don't believe what the other guys say - we invented it first") had the freshest ingredients imagined. The food portions aren't the grossly oversized you get in American chains. You can actually TASTE the food. And still be able to get up and walk two blocks to the Night Market.

“Where are they sourcing their butter?”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 2, 2012

Maybe it's not the quality of the butter, but the lack of a decent cake recipe. My husband and I visited this bakery after reading good reviews on trip advisor only to be a little disappointed. The coffee was not all it's cracked up to be and the carrot cake a little dry. I guess we are spoilt living in Australia. :)

Sorry you didn't like our stuff. We have lots of home bakers who are enthusiastic about our baked goods. We make them the old fashioned way beginning with butter. Even our carrot cake is made with butter. Most carrot cake recipes call for vegetable oil. Oh well, can't please everyone.

“I can’t believe it’s butter in Chiang Mai!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 27, 2012

This lovely diner is just a few steps away from where we stayed - Twin Peaks condo - on Chang Klan road. We came here every morning because we liked the relaxing atmosphere and affordable food. They serve Western style breakfast all day long! We always ordered scrambled egg with toast (yes it comes with real butter and strawberry jam) or muffins with fried eggs and Canadian bacon. We also loved the cinnamon buns, served warm, all gooey and sticky, delicious! Classic movie posters, old newspaper clippings, retro-style table wares, and Elvis rocks away on the speakers! You feel like you’re seating in a diner somewhere in California instead of Chiang Mai, Thailand!
We really enjoyed our leisure breakfast time here, drinking coffee, planning our day with maps and travel guidebooks spread out all over the table! Nice, friendly waitress and kitchen staff. Lots of other typical American lunch/dinner fares (e.g. hot dog, hamburger, meat loaf with mashed potato and gravy) are on the menu. Perfect place to go in case you get homesick or want to take a break from spicy Thai food! Breakfast for two 285Baht (about $9US).

Glad you liked our place. Our goal is to recreate old-fashioned diner style food. We make it al from scratch. The way diners used to do it maybe 50 or more years ago.

“Breakfast all day”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 7, 2012

I've been to Butter is Better quite a few times. Mostly at the weekends for breakfast. It's a good place to go.. not too expensive and there's a good variety on the menu. Last time I was there, I had the gluten-free pancakes. Those pancakes definitely rank in my top 5 ever. They even give you syrup rather than honey! The staff is extremely friendly and I've never been there and not found seating. It's a good place to go to get a bit of western fill.

If I didn't know better, I'd say my mother must have written this review. It's really nice to be appreciated. We do enjoy chatting with the guests and answering any questions they might have about Chiang Mai.. Of course, once the food is served, we get out of the way and let you enjoy your meal. And if you just want to eat and not converse, that's okay, too.
As for our baked goods, as our name suggests, we use butter not Margarine or transfats to make our cakes, pies, pastries, and cookies.

“Best Bakery and Breakfast in Chiang Mai!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2012

We spent 4 days in Chiang Mai and fortunately stumbled upon a superb diner called Butter is Better. Each morning we looked forward to starting our day with a delicious breakfast followed by a delightful freshly baked sweet good. Our favourites were the blueberry pancakes and the muffuletta. Often one stop in the morning wasn't enough for us, in the late afternoon we would go back to the diner for a slice of the most delicious warm lemon cake topped with drizzling frosting coupled with a nice cup of double expresso. We especially enjoyed the company of the owner and staff members who were very friendly and welcoming. Thank you for adding to our honeymoon experience in Chiang Mai!
