We just came home from a wonderful 10 days at Lanna Hill House. We were 6 including grandparents, us and 2 children aged 2.5 and 7 months. Everything was idyllic from the location to the house to the food which was divine. We had the perfect mix of staying at home (from home) and doing trips - all well coordinated by the house manager, Oppy. We will be back!
We visited LHH in late September to celebrate a 40th birthday. We were a group of 5 adults and 2 small children. The setting, the staff, the house, the food - everything was simply perfect. Definitely one of those holiday experiences that is even better than you hoped it would be! The owners of LHH have invested so much thought and care into the design of the house, as well as, the way the house is run. Locally sourced food, investment in staff training and a real compassion for the local community make LHH more than just a picturesque destination; it is a guest house with soul. We will be raving about our stay until our next visit - which we all hope will be very, very soon!
I can safely say that all our expectations
before we came were surpassed. The house itself is fantastic and provides a
brilliant base for a fully relaxing holiday with sufficient room for
everyone to have their own space and to totally relax.
All of the people that worked there were absolutely fantastic and made sure
that all of our wishes and desires were properly met. Nothing was too much
for them and we only had to ask for something and it would be done
immediately. From the few small problems that occurred during our stay they
were all dealt with efficiently and politely.
The food was great and the kids have now had a great introduction to Thai
food, whilst some of the dishes were a little on the spicy side for their
delicate pallets they all ate well and thoroughly enjoyed their culinary
Toom was brilliant and really made a big difference to our holiday. To have
somebody there that provided local advice and made things happen was very
special. She was hugely welcoming and made arrangements for us for all the
things that we wanted to see and do. Her judgement and selection of
restaurants for us was spot on and ensured that we managed to get everything
and more out of our visit to Chiang Mai. Providing us with a mobile phone
was a master stroke and ensured that we were never alone and we did not
waste too much time waiting around unfortunately my 8 year old now thinks
she should have a mobile phone, and rather enjoyed sending text messages -
hopefully she is satisfied with sending Toom and her son Facebook messages
for a little while longer. We were delighted to meet her boys and they
helped make our holiday better. I think that we are now all Facebook friends
demonstrates how much we think about her and the relationship that was
created was very much friends, which is want we wanted and I know she would
have stepped back if we had not been so welcoming to her and her family.
Special mention to Lek our driver too who performed his role with great
humour and spirit, he was always smiling and happy. He helped us several
times when we would otherwise have been a little stuck and was everything
that we needed.
We left notes in the book for future guests as to the activities and things
little to add. Perhaps a very local guide as to where the villages are and
the very nearest temples that could be reached on foot. The lake has more
potential I am sure than we utilised and can imagine fishing would be some
The only thing that was not quite right was the mountain bikes were in very
poor condition, we did go out for one long ride but the bikes were not
really working well enough to get proper usage from them. It would have been
nice to explore the local area on them a bit more and see local Thai
villages in a bit more detail. But that is a very minor thing.
Overall we had a fantastic time and feel that we were looked after by
everyone superbly. We think that we covered the vast majority of Chiang Mai
that we needed to and left very little off that we did not do. We very much
wish we could transport the house and the holiday concept to many other
parts of the world and this would be our regular annual holiday.
We had a wonderful week at Lanna Hill House. It was spacious airy and clean with glorious surroundings. Best of all was the team looking after us! Led by Nok they were so helpful and attentive. The food was delicious and seemed to get better and better as time went by. The breakfasts on the balcony are now to treasure in our memories! It is definitely ten out of ten from our happy party! I would not hesitate in recommending Lanna Hill. We had a wonderful holiday over xmas and New Year. The house and location are stunning. The staff were outstanding, particularly Nok the house manager who organised all our day trips and activities, but also the maids that looked after the children and baby and the chef who was so willing to adapt the menu to suit our needs.
(Repairing the bikes would be my only suggestion for improvement.)
This holiday provided wonderful experiences and memories and this was the opinion of the whole party which consisted of 3 very young children, their parents and grand parents and two 22yr old sons. So irrespective of age this holiday proved a resounding success.
We thoroughly enjoyed our week in this colonial home set in beautiful tropical gardens, surrounded by jungle and distant small villages. We love the house, the staff was really hospitable and the thai food was delicious!
The high-end colonial house is very spacious and allows comfortably for a large gathering of friends, family and kids. My wife and I found the place also perfect for a romantic escape in two.
Wonderful Nok, the manager and a great cook, suggested many activities… but I'm afraid after a busy period we preferred to acclimatize to the local time zone and climate in the peace and quiet of this tropical paradise and its immediate surroundings. We very much liked the fact that it is not located in a touristy area and enjoyed walking around in the small villages nearby always greeted with smiles and villagers curious about where we were from (at least that is what we understood... our phrase book unfortunately did not allow us for elaborate conversations).
A very big thank you to wonderful Nok and team – we’ll be back soon with more!!!

I had high expectations of Lanna Hill House after reading the reviews on Trip Advisor, but our stay surpassed every one of them.
To start with, the location of the house is extraordinary - set in the hills outside Chiang Mai, far away from the hustle and bustle of the town, but close enough that daytrips to sightsee are easily doable with well-planned transport (the driver hired through the house was fantastic - knowledgeable, friendly and a big hit with our 3yo daughter). Quiet, totally off the beaten track with breathtaking scenery - we loved it.
The architecture is so sympathetic to the location - you can feel the love and care that went into building this house. From the high vaulted ceilings to the kitchen windows designed to make the most of the views so that even chopping onions becomes a pleasurable experience, every part of the house was perfect. The bedrooms are luxurious and incredibly comfortable - everyone slept like babies, with only the noise of the odd cricket to disturb the silence. The weather was warm enough to swim and sunbathe in the gorgeous pool, but cool enough in the mornings and evenings to give a bit of welcome respite - a delicious change from the heat and humidity of Bangkok. We particularly loved eating our breakfast on the verandah with the early morning mist lifting over the hills and the sun starting to glisten across the lake - an uplifting start to the day - the pancakes were pretty awesome too!
The staff were exemplary - headed up by Nhok (Kamala), who speaks perfect English and is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the local area and culture. With her help, we were able to really make the most of our trip - from visits to bustling local markets, to shopping excursions to the best silk factories, to hikes by the side of mountain streams, and one very memorable early morning fishing trip where we caught our lunch - fabulous. Nhok is a total gem - its rare to come across someone who so obviously loves her job and communicates that love so well. As a result of flooding in Bangkok (fortunately now receding, so don't let that put you off visiting Thailand), we had to extend our stay at the last minute - Richard and Nhok couldn't have been more accomodating and helpful. And the house dogs are so child friendly - they provided endless hours of entertainment for my daughter!
Time to talk about the food - which surely deserves a special mention. Don't even think about cooking for yourself - dining at Lanna Hill House is a culinary experience beyond compare. For a very reasonable cost, the staff will cook you a three course meal that beats any Thai meal I've had in 5-star hotels in Thailand, using the freshest local ingredients. And joy of joys, you even have the opportunity to cook alongside them if you want, learning the very secrets of Thai cooking at the hands of masters. Every meal was different, every meal was special - and if you get the chance, do have the evening of entertainment under the stars. Totally magical and a real once-in-a-lifetime experience.
We have stayed in some of the best hotels in Thailand, but Lanna Hill House is so much more - a real home from home, in super-luxury style, but friendly and welcoming at the same time. This is definitely the nicest place I've stayed in Thailand, and quite possibly is the best holiday we've ever had as a family. Would we recommend it - definitely, we're already about to book a return trip!
