The whole zoo and aquarium was in a very sad state. Not well maintained. Toilets were VERY poorly kept without running water. The whole zoo is very hilly. So getting around with small children (4yo, 2yo & 3mths old) was very challenging. Lucky there are the buses and monorail. However it is quite expensive. We paid 250bath for 2 adults and 1 child.

The biggest zoo I've never seen, with a tropical forest.
A beautiful place to enjoy a walk !

It is even possible to feed baby elephants <3 !

Chiang Mai zoo was something I very much looked forward to before visiting Thailand but it turned out to be one of the most disappointing experiences of the trip. Other than the pandas (which you have to pay an extra 100b per person for) the zoo isn't up to much. Animals are in small, cramped enclosures particularly things like the Lions who had no room whatsoever to run around or exercise. Also elephants are advertised as being in an enclosure however we only saw them when they were by the side of the road in a small space waiting to be fed by passers by and it seemed like man in charge of the elephant was hurting it so it would make a noise to 'thank' the person feeding it.

The aquarium price isn't listed on the website before you go and this is probably because it is over double the price of the zoo and added onto the ticket if you choose to go when you arrive, the aquarium also in my opinion is disappointing.

Overall, in spite of the negativity of this review it was a nice way to spend a morning I just wouldn't choose to go back.

Absolutely shockingly horrible place, I saw motor cycles in and around the cages, a bus full of people with a few feet of caged animals , Cages are far to small anyway and animals are in no way relaxed I saw cages in poor repair with dirty drinking water and very old looking food. several animals in poor condition and saw several animals showing very distinct signs of mental health issues, self harming, agitated pacing to and fro..the bear the poor poor thing, i stood and watched it pace along a wall for ten minutes plus , it was blatantly ill, i nearly cried Tbh I left the place in shock,at how in this day and age people can be so ignorant in the way it treats 'wild life', appalling shameful place, needs to be closed down.

a) Stroller friendly in most places
b) Birds rainforest superb and must do
c) Takes more than 3-4 hours.
d) Buses go in a loop and only possible to go around once. Not possible to go from one end to other and then back again and then again
e) Only sweets, ice-creams, snacks, available in the zoo. No REAL food. Take your own
f) Very steep in places - buses worth it. Cannot buy ticket on the bus though. Buses every 5-10 minutes.
g) Good selection of animals - good spacious enclosures
h) Good number of activities for the older kids - shooting range, go karting, water zorb, paddle boats. All reasonably priced though not upmarket per se.

All in, highly recommended, especially for those with small kids. NOT for adults in wheelchairs. Those would be VERY HARD to get around.
