some friends & i traveled to chiang mai in january 2012 and we stayed at baanbooloo for a total of 9 nights. we loved it here, and would highly recommend it to anyone traveling to chiang mai. it is an especially great place for groups/families but there were also couples & solo travelers staying there as well.
communication over email is with adisak, who is the very friendly and knowledgeable owner who lives in london. he was actually in chiang mai while we were there which was great. the baanbooloo website is a bit busy but all of the necessary info is on there. we stayed in the mae lieng & nong noi rooms and all 5 adults & 1 kid were comfortable. there really weren't any problems with the rooms. our non-ensuite bathroom did have some bugs but that's to be expected with a semi-open air bathroom (don't worry, lots of privacy).
all day-to-day issues are handled expertly by orn who runs baanbooloo with the help of her brother and some other fantastic people. breakfasts were great. they were quite variable (eggs/toast/fruit everyday, sometimes sticky rice, pork skewers, fried chicken, buns filled with pork) but always delicious. i think orn would be very open to ideas if you knew you wanted certain things but not others. her brother makes great cappucinos which should not be missed!
the website details all sorts of other things that baanbooloo will help you with. there are market tours, city tours, cooking classes, free airport transfers, free activity booking, and if you stay enough nights, they'll even cook a lovely thai dinner for you. these were really thoughtful touches that made our stay very special.
true, staying at baanbooloo is not cheap but overall i still think it was well worth it. oh, 2 last things. free wifi was great. there was one day where it went out but this was a network-wide thing and had nothing to do with baanbooloo itself. also, there is no pool. there is a lovely garden but if you want to sit out in a bathing suit by a pool with a frothy drink, you can walk down the street to the de lanna hotel which has day passes (including a free drink) for 200 baht.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- A unique small Thai country village style guesthouse with surrounding wooden villas, hammocks, country garden, outdoor lounges with lots of arts and wood carvings. Visitors should be aware that this is a very natural setting. There are many kinds of creatures in the gardens Some bathrooms are semi open air and mosquitos are omnipresent as in the most part of Chiang Mai. We use mosquito netting in bedrooms as well as using air-conditioning, fans and mosquito repellents and creams free of charge. Guests are advised to wear loose fitting clothing with long sleeves and leg coverings in the early mornings and early evenings or to use a good strength anti mosquito spray. Sunny daytimes are mostly mosquito free. Hard to believe but BaanBooLOo Village seems completely cut off from the noise of the city centre yet is only 15 minutes from Chiang Mai International Airport. It is without question the quietest location in all of central Chiang Mai. We are in the central historic Old City Inner Moat area just 5 minutes walk from the major landmark Wat Pra Singh temple known by all in Chiang Mai. We provide a comprehensive and hearty Thai and International breakfast from 7am until 10am. We do cater for early start breakfasts and special dietary needs. Guests are recommended to discuss any special needs upon check-in. We have a quiet policy after 10pm as these are wooden houses and respect for neighbours is paramount. We also have an outdoor late lounge area with music and drinks until around midnight which is separate from guest rooms to avoid sleep disturbance. There are late night bars, jazz club and eateries all within 20 minutes walk or a short tuk tuk ride for around 100 baht. Most venues are open until around 1am. A handful are open until the early hours. Our concierge service includes helping guests to plan activities/spas/trekking plus advice on events in and around the city. This service is impartial and is included in the room charge. We would never recommend tourist service companies with animal cruelty reputations. BaanBooLOo Village is a 'green' environmentally friendly organisation evolving gradually. Our long term goal is to create a green oasis in the form of a living museum in the historic old city walls. ... more less
