We decided to stay at the River Ping after reading all the rave reviews. We were not disappointed in the least. The room was lovely (perfect if you are tired of the same old hotel rooms), the staff was wonderful and extremely accomodating, the food is EXCELLENT. Additional plus--just drop your laundry in the hamper provided in the room and the items will be returned cleaned and pressed the next morning (for a very nominal fee), free internet. The only downside is it is a little too far to walk from the hotel to the city center, but the taxis are abundant (for about 40 Baht).

Very highly recommended. If we go back to thailand again, we are planning our trip around the River Ping Palace.

The River Ping Palace is located on the small and serence River Ping. The beautiful teak buildings offer a quiet and pleasant home away from home. With lush landscape, romantic rooms with comfortable beds(not to mention fresh flowers, draped mosquito netting that adds charm and privacy),red antique doors that welcome you home after a long day of sight seeing. Stylishly decorated hallways that give you a sense of history. This treasure of a resort has a delicious restaurant, wonderful service and one on one attention and is a great priced establishment that wil cater to anyones needs.

My wife and I stayed at RPP in late Febuary. Since that time a few more reviews have popped up, some good and some not-so-good. I think some things need to be clarified.

Is this hotel rustic? Yes, so book your trip with that in mind. But the place being rustic is part of its charm. The rooms are rustic yet uniquely decorated. You don't go (as in our case) half way around the world to stay at a location that looks like your home. This place is over 100 years old but has charm and warmth that provide a truly unique experience. Also remember what you are paying to stay at this place, so don't expect the Four Seasons.

But what you can expect is sheets on the bed that rival the Four Seasons, service from the staff that is unlike any other place I've ever been and FOOD THAT IS OUT OF THIS WORLD!!! Of all the places we ate in Thailand from the most expensive to the hole in the whole corner store, RPP was by for the best. The key is to tell Esther what you like and she will serve you accordingly. Even if you chose not to stay at RPP I beg you to go there for dinner one night.

From start to finish Esther did everything in her power to make sure we were well taken care of and well fed. I highly recommend staying at the RPP. Esther thanks so much for the peanuts to go! We had a great time! - Craig & Michelle

River Ping is a work of art and love, starting with the antique teak house itself and extending to the water features, old photographs, bookcases full of interesting reading, gracious staff and above all the proprietor, Esther.

This is an owner who truly enjoys interacting with her guests and making each one of them feel special. If you want the Sheraton, as she says, this may not be your cup of tea, but if you like charming rooms that are all different with carefully chosen antique furnishings and dressing tables, wonderful four poster beds, nicely appointed ensuite bathrooms and carefully chosen artwork and local craft items adorning each room, do stay at the River Ping Palace.

The riverside deck and dining area is a joy at any time of the day and the food is well prepared and offers great variety. The included breakfast is more than generous in both quantity and quality and varies each day as to pastries and breads, but always includes a plate of fresh fruit.

I highly recommend the River Ping Palace to anyone travelling to Chiang Mai and the owner is a fount of local knowledge and advice and goes out of her way to assist you in enjoying Chiang Mai and the surrounding area.

We stayed at the River Ping for several days at the end of January, 2006. The rooms were immaculate and beautifully furnished, and the garden setting was lovely. The open air riverside restaurant served good food, and I particularly appreciated the large fresh fruit bowl from which guests could help themselves at any time. The staff was pleasant and attentive, and the owner, Esther, went out of her way to be friendly, and to make sure that things went smoothly during our stay. She even provides a computer for the use of her guests! We definitely look forward to staying at the River Ping again.

River Ping Palace is the kind of place I dream about on winter days at home in Tahoe. It is one of my favorite places to stay in all of Thailand. I love the antique charm of the old teak wood house with it's well maintained gardens and water features. The decor throughout is beautifully executed, a mix of antique charm with contemporary touches. From the time I arrived with my fiance, mother and aunt we were treated like royalty in the "palace" The staff was very welcoming carrying our luggage to our rooms and offering us a welcome fruit shake and local guide magazines as well as friendly answers to our many questions about the area. The rooms are beautiful, some looking out on the river and others onto the lush tropical garden. I have to mention the antique four poster beds, as well as being absolutely gorgeous they are the most comfortable I've found in my travels. Waking up to the "included" breakfast every morning was a real treat! Sitting on the peaceful river, enjoying my book while being served seasonal fruits, smoothies, omelettes, and a varying array of other daily goodies. My coffee cup was always full thanks to the attentive staff, it was definately a great way to start the day. The dinner experience was superb as well and seems to be a popular place among chiang mai locals. I was very impressed by the attention to detail from the table settings to the fruit carving. The ambiance at night is lovely with the red lanterns glowing over the river, always the perfect music mixing with the sound of the waterfalls. I loved the Tom Yum seafood soup and the Lab Gai, and no meal is complete without the mango Cheesecake!!! It's to die for! River Ping Palace is a place I will look forward to returning to every time I make it to Chiang Mai. I didn't want to leave! Many thanks to Ester and her staff for all her wonderful hospitality. Places like this are rarely found in life. It's a real treasure I will hold dear in my memories of Thailand.

There are many, many places one can stay in Chiang Mai and so when you have only a limited time in a place like Chiang Mai, you hope that you have made the right choice for your accomodations.
I read about the River Ping Palace on the TripAdvisor website and so we decided to try it. It was just a delightful experience. On arrival, you leave the busy city street and at once are transported into a quiet, walled, garden setting, following a garden walkway a short distance to the dining area directly on the edge of the Ping River. The hostess, Esther Ting, and her staff were exceptionally accomodating and very helpful with information about the local scene.
Dining was such a pleasure, while viewing the tranquil Ping River and the wonderful Thai food only made the experience that much better. The desserts are out of this world! The old teak constructed house and guest rooms provided a comfortable, romantic touch and gives one the feel of earlier times of Thai culture where life revolved around such simple pleasures as the house, the garden, the river and good food.
Activities about the city are easily accessible from this little hideaway and it was always fun to return from our daily activities and relax in this peaceful setting. We would highly recommend the River Ping Palace.
