The Mae Sa Waterfall is a great picnic spot with food stalls and a well-developed path through the 10 levels of the falls. It gets very crowded and can be difficult to find a place to eat or swim with so many people around!

It was not full of foreigners, but many many Thai people were having picnics there. There are only a few spots where water falls more than 2-3 feet, and these were all full of people. It was a nice hike but we didn't stay long because all 10 levels were so crowded.

Wanting to escape the heat in Chiang Mai we rented a red taxi for 600 bht and went to the falls for a couple of hours.

The water was beautiful, cold and fresh. Our girls enjoyed exploring and sliding on the rocks. We were told when we entered the park to swim at number 5 waterfall. Standing in behind waterfall was great fun and a few degrees colder.

Lots of people buying picnics from the stalls at carpark. We didnt have time to climb to the top unfortunately and in hindsight should have booked our taxi for longer, but a great few hours was spent here. Although there were a lot of people around it didn't feel overcrowded. I would recommend taking or wearing closed in shoes if you want to walk to the top as the stairs are quite steep.

I happened upon this waterfall by chance - my driver thought it would be a good stop to end our day touring around before he brought us back to our hotel in Mae Rim.
He was right - it was great. Lots of steps up to the various stages of falls, each stage with natural pools, stones, some with little bridges to walk over to the other side of the falls.
What I really loved were all the locals swimming, picnic-ing, and having a great time. I'm so used to seeing Thai people in Bangkok working all the time, it was really nice to see the family and fun side of the culture here.
Bring your bathing suit! We didn't have ours and I wish we had :)

I have been to this waterfall numerous times....it remains in a rustic & natural appearance without being a tourist trap.
Be prepared to climb many tiers/steps to view all the segments to this waterfall.
It is also a nice place to spread a blanket and have a picnic or just relax.
Remember to bring a camera since it is lovely & in its natural lush state.
Price to enter is reasonable.
Suggestion: DO NOT TAKE A VAN to travel from Chiang Mai & experience this waterfall.
Site Seeing/Tourist Companies will charge you MUCH and will only RIP-U-OFF.
You can easily take a RED TAXI any where in Chiang Mai for much much less monry..

Plenty of different waterfalls to see here. Great for a Picnic. Thai food available to buy there. You cannot take alcohol. They will take it off you. Take your bathers for a swim too! Watch out for slippery rocks if you do.
