The fact that this restaurant has received 3 terrible ratings from the last 4 reviews is not a coincidence. Something is seriously wrong with this restaurant behind the scenes right now.

My friend took me to this restaurant for a weekday lunch and in all honesty, the restaurant has a really nice ambience to it. You can really enjoy the lovely garden view from your table. However, the food was a total disaster. For the truffle soup, the soup wasn’t puréed. Normally that would have been fine if the mushrooms were evenly chopped. However, that was not to be the case and the uneven bits of mushroom really spoilt the texture of what was otherwise a rather simple dish.

The other starter was the mussel pot (mussels served with herb butter) or simply “mussel chowder”. The “herb butter” sauce was simply inedible. It was merely boiled cream with thyme springs, absolutely disgusting.

The kobe steak (restaurant’s recommendation) for main course had to be sent back as we asked for “medium rare” but it was served “blue”. Roasted rack of lamb was also sent back for the same reason. Both of those dishes returned “well done,” looking back they might as well have just served us chicken sausages.

The final nail in the coffin was having to pay 230USD between the two of us (4 dishes and one beer) for a meal that had been completely sabotaged. Bitter irony for a place that claims to be “one of Southeast Asia’s finest restaurant”.

An old fashioned very dated restaurant.
If you like the expierence of beiing trown back in time and visit a so called elegant restaurant from 50 years ago this is the place for you to go.
They even have a live band( piano and bass) with a singer who sings only music from 70 years ago.
All in all a nice setting if you like to go for such a trip back into the future.

But

We had uneatable food and undrinkable wine.
We had a very unpleasant evening and felt ripped of for the price we paid for the food and wine which they served us.

we were charged 400 Euro for 4 persons which is toatally insane for what we got.
we would not even go back if they would pay us to go back

The restaurant scene in Chiang Mai is many and varied with cuisines of all types and prices ranges available.

Le Coq d'Or is at the top end in terms of quality of food and service as well as price.

If you are looking for a high-class meal with a great selection of wines in a somewhat formal atmosphere, this is a good choice.

This restaurant has been operating for many, many years and while the menu is classic rather than innovative, it's a safe bet for a celebration or a 'splurge'.

Wow, what a shame. Came here for anniversary while on extended honeymoon expecting amazing things, but alas was far from it. Although set in amazing grounds and with an arranged car to pick us up / take us back, we should have realised we were in for a tough time when it was almost empty on a Friday night. The food is terrible - especially when considering the kind of money charged: Le Coq D'or just cannot cook a steak (sent back twice, offered to speak to chef in French (turns out he's Thai), offered to cook ourselves, then subsequently cancelled), and the Grand Marnier souffle was almost a runny scrambled egg, and they forgot half our aperitif order. After an incredibly disappointing experience, I expected a goodwill gesture money-off on the bill - alas the only item subtracted was the CANCELLED steak. Overall experience: awful, it ruined our anniversary, and we will never return. And it still set us back several £'00s.

This really was the gourmet dinner of our holiday. The service was exceptional, the ambience was ultra smooth and our 9 year old daughter didn't feel out of place either! They will even pick you up from your hotel in a 1940's London Cab! The wine list, as you'd imagine was pretty extensive too. Between the 3 of us we had the frois groie, prawn cocktail and frogs legs, followed by a cleansing sorbet and main courses of chateaubrian, roasted venison and lobster ravioli. Even though this was the most expensive we had all holiday it really was something very special!
