The Chang Thai House is a lovely little boutique hotel in a small back road close to the main road (10 mins walk max). The room is beautifully decorated and has a small balcony. The beds are very comfy and the shower has good pressure.

The staff is young and very friendly, nothing is too much. They helped us book a tour and arranged transport to the railwaystation upon departure. Breakfast is fine and there is plenty of it, you won't go hungry. Did not have a chance to try the pool as it was raining when we were there but it looked clean. Would visit the hotel again if we were ever in Chiang Mai again.

Stayed here for three nights recently. The staff are friendly and check-in was smooth. They have a tourist desk and will give advice and book tours. I really liked this hotel but a few small changes would be a big help. The bathroom has a wooden window-size partition between it and the bedroom which allows no privacy. A mirror on that wall would be better, and the lack of one is the main change needed. The only bathroom mirror sits on the vanity and is about 7" x 5" and needs to be carried outside to use it for an electric shaver as there is no power point in the bathroom. It's too small and awkwardly placed for shaving with a razor. The television is much smaller than usual for a hotel room. There are windows on three walls, the problem being that one of these walls leads to the hallway which means that with the hall light on all night there is no way to darken the room for sleeping. It doesn"t seem necessary to have two windows on this wall, especially when the curtains need to be pulled to prevent people looking in. The lighting in the room is poor, especially above the bed, if you like to read late at night.
The hotel has a small pool, however it is straight off the reception desk which shares the same space as the dining area. Little wonder the pool was not being used, unless bathers wanted to walk back into the dining area past reception, which was nothing more than a desk. The breakfast was adequate, however it was always cold. The bacon and eggs were kept in warmers which were never turned on.
Despite these comments I really liked the place; the room and bathroom were nice, it was clean and the staff friendly. It's just that it could be so much better with only a few changes such as a mirror, food warmers turned on and heavy curtains on the unnecessary hall windows.

We chose this hotel because we did'nt want to spend too much on accomodation as we have organized to go on tours everyday. We stayed for 7 nights with two young kids.

Location:

It is located on the back residential street. There will be some dogs so you will need to be careful. Its located just outside the main city centre but 10-15 minutes walk to the Night Bazaar which is the place to go at night. You can catch the red mini bus which cost 20 baht pp if you can't be bothered walking. I prefer the location because it is not on the main street so it is quiet. If you want to stay in the new city, it will be noisy and crowded. It all depend on your preference.

Room/Hotel/Amnenities

The hotel itself is fairly newish. The room are spacious, clean and has simple furnishing. There is no wardrobe only a tiny closet but we didnt mind because the room is big enough to put our luggage on the floor. It has small, flat screen tv with several english chanels. They clean our room everyday. My only complain is the sink in the bathroom is right next to the toilet seat whcih was annoying.

Pool/Food

Pool is very small and cold. There are only 4 lounge beds. i did not bother to go in. The kids only manages to swim half an hour at the most because it is cold. They have a restaurant and the food is not bad at all. There are only limited variety during breakfast but for the price we paid i cant realy complain.

Service/ Staff

One word. BAD. The staff are mostly young. They are either on you tube, on the phone or texting someone therefore are too busy to even greet or acknowledge you. Most of them seem like they can't be bothered to be there at all. It came to a point where i didn't want to approach them because i felt like i was disturbing them! They dont even smile at you. Everything was an effort for them

Conclusion

We paid $ 260 for 7 nights including breakfast with two kids. It is very cheap. Location is good. The hotel is clean and well maintained. What really annoys me is the very bad service. It ruined it for me. I have stayed on other budget hotel before and i know i should not expect a 5 star service but at least smile or acknowledge me when im talking to you. My husband said he would stay there again. I'd think twice.

Tips

Try Dash restaurant. It is number 1 on trip advisor. Authentic Thai food, great service, nice ambience and reasonable price. Arnusan night market in Night Bazzar. Cheap, street mall kind of food. Plenty of sea food restaurants to choose from. There is a dentist near Chiang tai house. If you go outside the hotel turn left walk straight until you hit the main street. Very clean, high tech and modern but most of all cheap! There is also a lady that repair clothes if you turn left then right. She will be just outside with her sawing machine. To have my clothers repaired here in Australia is very expensive. She only charged me $3!

We stayed for two nights. I came with two friends and they stayed in a double room and myself in a twin room in hopes that the next day a double room would be available.

Turns out that I decided two stay afte all the two nights in the twin room because it was ok, but after the first night, this guy "Je-je", wokes my up at 9:00 AM and told me that I have to move right away because there are people waiting for the room and I didn't have time to shower.

Plus, how we were not interested in any of his tours, he began to treat us hostile. Make fun of us for not knowing where we had to pick the towels for the pool and a long etcetera.

This guy "Je-je" was so anoying.

We ran from this place to a nearby hotel.

Our family of 2 adults and 2 small children stayed at Chang Thai for 4 nights. Upon arrival, Chang Thai had only allocated us 1 room, although we had booked and paid for 2 twin bedded rooms via Agoda. After a bit of discussion we were allocated 2 rooms on the ground floor(1 with twin beds and 1 with a queen bed). The rooms were nicely decorated and were very clean, however the bathroom showers needed a good scrub out to remove the mould.
The hotel provided a good tour desk, through which we booked a half day visit to DoiSep and the Hmong Village at a very reasonable price 2000 baht for 4 people). Breakfast was included in the room rate, which consisted of fresh fruit, salad, a stir fry and rice, 2 types of breakfast cereal, sausages, fried eggs, toast, juice,coffee/ tea.
Free wifi was handy as were the 3 P.C's provided in the foyer - which my children played games on.
The pool is quite small, but more than adequate for kids and adults alike to cool off after a hot day of sightseeing in Chiang. No pool towels were provided, so we had to use our room towels - and these were only replaced when we asked.

Room Tip: Avoid the ground floor rooms as they are noisy being located next to the kitchen and cleaners cupbo...

We were picked up from the train station and shown around the hotel. The room was nicely decorated with everything you would need at great value.

The hotel boasts free wifi, lockers and a bar. You can book excursions through the hotel, they do whatever they can to get you on your preferred trip, we would recommend the Thai cooking class, bamboo rafting and elephant riding.

The hotel is located halfway between the old town walls and lively night bazaar (about 5 mins walk to each).

Strongly recommend this hotel.
