FURAMA is one of those hotels that you go "wow that's alot of bang for your buck". It's relatively inexpensive for what you get. I actually like the location because you are closer to the Chiang Mai so you are right where all the cafe's and coffee shops are located. You will be in the district with all the local Thais. If you want to do the "backpacker" experience then stay in the Old Quarter. When you stay at Furama you will be near the locals. Again you are in walking distance to many great cafe's and sushi joints along with the clubs and bars that typically only have a few Westerners.
As for the hotel. It was probably lavish and beautiful when it was built but time has eaten away at its interior. The pool is freezing and you only get sunlight from the pool at the top of the building. Which by the way has a great view of Doi Sutep? The staff is friendly and the breakfast is pretty nice. The rooms are really big and the room service food is decent.
Again, overall its worth its price. I would stay again here because of the location and the ease of every taxi and tuk tuk driver knowing its location. And you can walk to the mall in about 5 minutes.More
