My husband and I loved our 4 night stay at the Ping Nakara. It was the perfect ending to our 3+ week vacation in SE Asia where the accommodations didn't always meet our expectations. We loved the architecture and the tasteful decor. The staff were friendly and helpful. The breakfast was comprehensive, including buffet items such as fruit, freshly-squeezed orange juice, cereal, yogurt, and pastries, including really good croissants. There were several delicious cooked-to-order items available on the menu. We loved our spacious room. It was decorated beautifully with one wall covered with hand-painted roses. We had asked for a quiet room after reading some comments about the busy street. The "rose" room was relatively quiet. It did not face the street.

The walk to the old city took us between 15 - 20 minutes. The hotel is right on the Ping river. There's an inviting cafe, the Nakara Jardin, right next door to the hotel. They serve lunch, afternoon tea, and yummy pastries. It's a lovely oasis where you can sit and enjoy views of the river. We also enjoyed dinner one night at the hotel. We hadn't planned to eat there, but the place we intended to go to was closed, so we ended up back at the hotel. The food was surprisingly good.

The service was terrific! They were friendly, they always remembered our names. The breakfast was included and it had a great variety from the buffet to personalized menu items. The pool was cute, good size, and clean. The rooms were clean, cozy, and roomy. The bathroom had a large tub, bathroom sink had a small counter space, and the toilet had a sliding door to the shower.

My husband and I stayed three nights in Ping Nakara and we really enjoyed it. The staff was very friendly and efficient. The hotel is beautiful both in the common areas and the rooms. The rooms are very spacious and beautifully decorated. It is just 10 minutes walk from the Chiang Mai city.

From the moment you step into this hotel it is nothing but beautiful. Stunning lobby, serene pool area and tastefully decorated rooms make this a winner when you're in Chang Mai. A wonderful breakfast was included in which there was a small buffet and a menu with yummy choices. The one drawback is it is on a busy street but then again probably most of the streets in Chang Mai are busy. But they do their best to shield the noise with a double door in the room which worked fine. I could not hear traffic at night. We used this hotel as base camp to see the sights including an elephant trek, Buddhist temple and hill tribes. We were in Chang Mai for two nights and crammed in what we wanted to do. A short stay but very happy with the accommodations. Friendly staff and fair price a bonus.

A great deal of thought and care has gone into the design of this hotel. The exterior has many beautiful details, such as the fretwork, and the scenes of elephants on the walls which surround the pool. In the entrance there is a magnificent painting of a traditional textile hanging which shows the animals of the (Chinese) zodiac; there is an exquisite library next to the pool, and our room was so pretty that we fell in love with it at first sight - beautiful colours, the flowers of a Buddha tree (I think) painted on one wall, a traditional rug, and so on. I nearly forgot the pot of complimentary toffees in the room!

We really enjoyed our five-night stay here in a grand deluxe room facing the rear of the property (7200 Baht per night, inclusive of breakfast and taxes - we considered this good value as Chiang Mai in peak season can be expensive). Very comfortable bed; lovely bathroom - and we didn't have to go through the bathroom to get to the bedroom. The location is excellent, being about five minutes from a major intersection where it's always possible to find a tuk tuk (outside the Anantara/Chedi hotel) and close to the night markets, shops and restaurants. (For the walled old city and the temples there, it's better to take a tuk tuk, although we did walk it sometimes.) We did a lot of activities and so didn't use the pool which did, however, look very clean and inviting, but cold (Thailand had just had some very chilly weather).

The staff at reception were always most helpful - I cannot remember all their names, but I seem to recall that three of the ladies were May, Pui and Nat - they answered our many questions and were happy to book cars and restaurants for us.

The reason I have given the hotel four out of five, rather than a full five, concerns food. We found the breakfasts quite disappointing. I usually eat a large plate of fruit, some yogurt and some bread, and don't bother with anything cooked - in other words, I like to graze from the buffet. The problem almost every morning (at different times) was that items from the buffet ran right down and fresh plates of food did not materialise. There was often no banana bread, very little fruit, and so on. Sometimes the butter also ran out, and I think the staff here need to be a bit more "on the ball" and re-stock the plates when items are running low. I would also have preferred a yogurt that wasn't a sweet one in a plastic pot. We also had lunch at the Nakara Jardin one day - my husband had pasta with a very large quantity of meat sauce and asked for some bread to go with it. This request seemed to "throw" the staff and we were eventually told that he could have some bread, but that he would have to wait for ten minutes for it, which seemed odd ... Another odd thing was that one day he asked for two boiled eggs at breakfast, but was served four!

I do agree with the reviewer who found the pool loungers uncomfortable - this could be remedied easily by having a supply of mattresses/cushions. We were not disturbed by road noise, but we did have a very noisy neighbour for a few nights who seemed to sleep all day and then go out and come in very late at night and bang his door each time! The design of the building does mean that sound travels a bit, but it can't be helped.

In spite of this we did, as I have said, experience a great stay here and I would certainly recommend the hotel for anyone who likes a small, very pretty hotel with character and a peaceful ambiance. We have stayed in several hotels in Chiang Mai on numerous occasions in the last twenty years and Ping Nakara ranks as our favourite so far, so we do hope to come back one day.

My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights in February. We arranged to be picked up at the airport and the Guest Relations girl, Som who met us took us also on 2 different tours in the next few days. We thought it a nice touch they put us with the same staff member and she was very pleasant with good English skills. The location of the hotel is good - easy walking distance to the Night Market and Warorot (food and flowers mainly) market. However even in winter walking in the afternoon sun is hot and tiring. Our room was large and we had no complaints but the breakfast was even better. As there are only 19 rooms there is a buffet of cereals, cold meats and fruits but you order from a menu for your hot selection. There were very good choices of both Asian and Western foods and we usually ordered one of each for breakfast (there was no limit). The spa was good but a bit dearer than I expected for Thailand.

Room Tip: Only 19 rooms and 2 stories so probably doesn't matter

Joseph Keeler and his staff at Ping Nakara do an absolutely amazing job of offering a first-rate service at a very quaint hotel. The staff is friendly; management was fantastically flexible when it came to our bizarre schedule by allowing us to check in a few hours early; the hotel itself is situated in a great neighborhood—about a 20-minute walk to the old city—and on a beautiful property. While on the Ping Nakara grounds, it’s easy to forget you’re in a city—so peaceful.

The pool receives a few hours of sunlight per day and the rooms are superb, very tastefully assembled and very well kept. Our room was always tidied up and teardown service performed—throughout our entire five-day stay—without us ever seeing the housekeeping staff. Breakfast was simple, albeit delicious. You can certainly find less expensive options in Chiang Mai, but good luck finding a nicer place in this price range.

We will return; we highly recommend this place.
