Joys house

We arrived in Chiang Mai two days after being in Thailand, with our first stop being in Bangkok. We were greeted at the airport by A-ga, one of the students from Joy's House.

At Joy's House we immediately were greeted by Buyue to fill out the papers and get checked in. The atmosphere was really delightful. It was afternoon by that time, so we sat by the pool and then ordered a "snack" item from the menu, fried rice. It was more like a meal, and was extremely tasty!

Our room was in the additional part of the property and was way bigger than we needed. We were in room 19, which had a separate kitchen and living room, bedroom, and bathroom. The room had a king size bed and two smaller couches in the main area. We also had a little patio area as well.

Our welcome dinner the first night was just splendid. They make the most amazing food at Joys House and I highly recommend eating there as much as you can or want to. It’s truly a treat and you don’t have to think about what you are getting or ordering, just that it’ll be good. After dinner, the students play live music and sing American songs, it's really quite fun and magical. I loved listening to them sing and it created a relaxed-family style atmosphere that makes you want to stay forever.

For our day trips, we did the children’s shelter which easily could be the highlight of our entire time in Thailand. The farm is really spectacular. The children are so well mannered, accommodating, and open, you just love them instantly. They really have an amazing life there and it makes you feel like you are doing a good thing by visiting. The food at the farm was once again great! We also went to the hot springs at night for a bath and it was such a great experience, I'm just sad I didn't capture any pictures of it. Be sure to do this if you visit the farm. We stayed one night at the farm and it gave us some extra time with the kids, which was nice. I know I'll be back here one day.

Other trips we did, elephant camp, feeding the monks at Wat Doi Suthep, and cooking school. Our bike ride to the market was a lot of fun and the girls who accommodated us (Leone and Par) were very attentive and offered us everything in the market to eat and try. The class was fun, and our teacher (Joy’s daughter) was really great as well. We made more food than two people can eat so we shared it with as many people as positive. For each trip you do through Joy’s House you’ll be accompanied by one of the student’s or staff. That in itself makes it worth staying here. You always felt a part of the things you were doing and the culture by having a local with you.

The best part about Joy’s House is that you feel as this is a home-away-from home. It’s about 20 minutes from the center of town and they provide a shuttle twice a day or you can get your own tuk tuk for 200 baht. It was pretty easy to get transportation to and from the town square. Joy’s House had maps for us with directions in Thai that we could hand to any taxi driver to get us home easily—which was great.

Overall, it’s where I’d recommend you’d stay if you want a true Thai experience with amazing people, food and atmosphere.

We spend a 4 nights stay at joy's house in chiang my and really enjoyed every single minute, since we we're made feeling like it was our home, but with a warm hearted thai atmosphere.
We really enjoyed the accompany of joy's children and the stories they told us and gave us a very deep impression what is their live about.
Every evening we took the chamce taste their self cooked food, which from our point view was delicious. Also we made some of the tours joy's house is offering and we had some great experiences during it, and learned a lot of the culture. We did the markets and temple tour, so as the hill tribe visit and one of the elefant tours. Unfortunately we did had the time to visit the children shelter foundation, but we would definetly do it, when we can come back, as well as the self cooking experience.
In fact joy's house is a little bit far outside the city center, but didn't really need to go there since we felt very comfortable we the nice and chilled atmosphere in the evening where could listen such nice live music. Special thanks to all the children who give us such a great stay there and also to Joy who was really engaged to help us with every single wish and also was really interested to our experine and what may make the stay even more comfortable.

We've recommended joy's to every of our friends when we came back and hope they can keep their idea of combining a social institution and guesthouse with such a nice style.

Looking forward to be there again!

Room Tip: Rooms on the pool site are a little bit more quite in the morning.

This is a magical place. The moment you walk through the gates you realize you are somewhere special. The energy is positive and all the people, content. We arrived in the morning and were greeted by workers and children visiting from the Organic Farm. For some reason, their welcome touched me deeply. It was so pure and genuine. The experience only continued to get better. From the yoga lesson, welcome massage, cooking lesson and hike, both my husband and I, could not have asked for more. We did not schedule enough time to spend here. I want to go back. The idea of Charity Tourism is brilliant and this was one of the best experiences we have had in our travels. Breakfast was good, but dinner was special. The outdoor dining area is comfortable, and every night there was a musical troupe with acoustic guitar and the kids singing Western music. We actually cancelled plans one night to go out on the town because we were so comfortable staying at Joy's House. We think that is the best place to be in Chiang Mai!

Room Tip: We had a guest room off the pool. Quiet and private.

From the time I was picked up from the airport and throughout my stay Joy's House was exceptional. I stayed there during Christmas and the New Year. The atmosphere during the festive season was amazing and generosity of the staff was fantastic.

The rooms are clean and a generous size... there's a lot of variations and each one is unique. The gardens are beautiful and the pool setting is lovely.

I highly recommend Joy's House to anyone wanting to stay in Chiang Mai.

Joy’s House is more like staying in someone’s home than a resort or hotel, or even a typical guest house. Comfortable, very clean, enough privacy, and basic. We stayed in the “King” room which is a Luxury Room in the pricing. King bed, extra bed for our daughter, large room with wood floors, pus a living room area, with moveable divider. Private bath with shower (good hot water), sink, mirrors, counter, flushing toilet. It was very nicely decorated and like I said had the feeling of a guest room in a large home. It had everything we needed. We stayed in the main compound (there are a few more rooms available just across the alley) and this was great for us as it's a large and beautiful walled-in area with gardens and many places to lounge, read alone, or visit with other guests, or Joy’s house students and staff. Laundry service was available for 20 baht per item and came back nicely folded. Aside from the laundry, the only other incidentals that added to our total bill were drinks at the bar, yoga, and massage.

We did not go to Joy’s House expecting a hotel or resort experience. We came hoping to make friends and learn about another culture and to feel a connection to Thailand. We received all of this and in larger doses than we imagined. We knew that our tourist dollars we also helping to support the Children's Shelter Foundation and we wanted to learn about the work they are doing. We were impressed. The organic farm was beautiful and is worth a visit as well!

This was our first trip to Thailand, 2 parents and an 8 year old daughter. Our trip was 3 weeks and included an island stay, time in Bangkok and a week at Joy's House. We planned the week at Joy's house in the middle of our trip because it seemed like a nice break and a place where our daughter could be safe and comfortable and maybe make some friends. We were not disappointed!

We arranged our accommodations and schedule with Joy's House in advance via email. We chose to do activities that they arranged almost every day. We went shopping and Chiang Mai, to the Children's Shelter Foundation organic Farm, took a cooking class, rode elephants, visited the Cave Temple, and attended the Christmas Party. We received an invoice for the entire week, which included our activities, meals, and accommodation. We loved having guides for the activities, the guides are the older students that came up from the Children's Shelter and are now learning how to give tours, speak English, teach cooking, etc. Some of the older students are now staff at Joy's House. Without exception, they were delightful. We learned much about Thai culture from them and also saved time by being brought to the type of shopping we were looking for.

Our daughter could run around on her own and hang around with other children guests and also the older kids on the staff. It was safe and gave her a feeling of independence. She likes to socialize and we do also but sometimes just want to read quietly and relax and the communal areas were good for all of this. You could also grab fruit and tea anytime, free. We enjoyed hanging out after dinner for the nightly sing-alongs.
Another bonus for us since we homeschool is that we appreciated the "Classroom Without Walls" model that the children of the foundation benefit from.

The only thing we would have done differently is to not do the Elephant riding. We did not feel comfortable with the conditions for the animals there. I have since learned about an elephant sanctuary and next time, we will choose that one.

My daughter is inspired to come back to Joy’s House as a volunteer when she is old enough. I might want to join her!

In my opinion, this is not a place you visit for the accommodation, although is was very clean and very comfortable. It’s a place to come to learn about Thailand and have a heartfelt connection to people who are doing good in the world.

We are a family of two adults and one teenaged daughter who recently travelled to Thailand over the holidays. From the airport throughout our stay we were warmly welcomed by Joy and all of the wonderful staff. The setting of the guest house was lovely and peaceful with many mature trees, plants and our two bedroom suite was comfortable and clean. The food is excellent as well. But what makes it so special are the people! Many of the staff are from Children's Shelter Foundation (CSF), a charitable organization which helps disadvantaged and orphaned youth to learn life and job skills. Thanks to Wow for our awesome cooking class, Jack & Jack for our trip to the CSF farm, our friendly bartender, reception, lovely massage ladies, Rupert (yoga) and everyone else including Joy who was so helpful with everything. We spent a very memorable New Year's Eve with 40 + children from the foundation who did performances showcasing their unique hilltribe and cultural dances and songs. Fellow guests from around the world were good company too. In short, if you appreciate warm smiles and a relaxed atmosphere, I highly recommend it. I would love to go back and stay longer some day, photos to be posted soon.

Room Tip: Small family suite was perfect for us with tons of room, 2 baths - perfect for small family and righ...

So many people have strived to describe what this accommodation has to offer-it is hard to recreate in a short review. We are a family with 2 kids age 10 and 12, I should mention that we are a shy and reserved group and I realized it was a bit risky to book joy's house over Christmas but I really wanted something special for our first Christmas so far from home. There are some great descriptions of the truly memorable and uniquely wonderful Christmas eve that we all experience together-my personal favorite was the 10-12 year old boys doing "baby, baby" by Justine Bieber (really? In Thailand on Christmas, was this really happening?) or the entire party dancing to "I have survived"-kids, parents, visitors, natives . . . But it did take our shy bunch a full couple of days to truly embrace the warmth, sincerity, and I would say love of this place. It took our our amazing Xmas eve, an awesome cooking class night that was one of our best meals in 3 weeks of travel, the really fun singing sessions every night (my favorite was their rendition of pricetag). There were meaningful conversations with the other guests from all over the world . . . You just don't get that in your typical tourist hotel! So, if all you want a base to do all the tourist stuff in chaing Mai- you will not be happy-this is out of town, the rooms are fine, but not top of the line. If you want to be a part of something so much bigger than sightseeing, even the more reserved will be brought in. We got to know several really wonderful young people, got an inside view of a challenge in Thailand which is the lack of support for non-native kids-and we loved their tourism/philanthropic model to address this. Something that really worked for our family was having room #20 which is a little down the road from the main compound and was actually a very nice set up -there was a big oversized room that easily held a king bed and two kid beds on the floor-the best part was the big covered porch that had several comfortable spots for hanging out-we liked retreating to our quiet spot. So, read all the reviews and decide for yourself, joys house may be just what your family needs to truly connect with Thailand.
