its the same price as so many other NICE places in CM. taken here by a tuk tuk driver. theyre pushy, rude, they lie to get you to spend money. its not so clean, the beds are terrible. its not in a great place, if youre lucky there will be a group staying here and you can socialise at night in the dining area but otherwise its rubbish. i was in chiang mai for a month and stayed in some amazing places for the same price!

My boyfriend and I, like many others, arrived in Chiang Mai and were immediately taken here by a kind hotel tout from the train station. The hotel, at first glance, is very nice - there's a little restaurant/internet cafe on the ground floor, with some scattered workout equipment for guest use, and plenty of rooms/areas to sit. The price - 200 baht a night for a double with fan - is perfect. It's very close by to both the Old City (and the Sunday Market) as well as the night bazaar area.

However, the staff there are very pushy with their "nature treks" and insist on sitting down with you in an effort to convince you to partake in one. My boyfriend and I did just that, and certainly enjoyed it (because that was the sort of thing we're looking for); still, I can imagine that that sort of pestering could be irritating for those who weren't interested in such a thing.

In addition, the rooms aren't the best - they might seem to be at first glance, but we quickly discovered that our first room was infested with bed bugs (and we've got the bites to prove it!). After complaining to the staff, they moved us to a bed-bug free room on the third floor.

I can't say we had any problems after that, but staying there did leave a bit of a bad taste in my mouth; the staff, although friendly on the surface, are very distant and don't care to get to know anybody unless you're giving them money. I wouldn't stay there again, ultimately; I've heard that there are better places for the same price in the surrounding area.

We got off the bus from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, and a very nice lady said she could take us to our hostel. She recommended the Chiang Mai Inn, so we said we would take a look. At 350B for a twin with aircon the rooms were ok, if dirty. We were so tired, we got a room without looking around other hostels.

Unfortunately we read the poor reviews after we agreed to stay a night, and sure enough the moment we went downstairs, the staff tried to push their jungle trek, and they didn't stop for our whole stay.

Luckily, we didn't go straight to bed - and we saw the bed bugs all over the pillows. We went downstairs to change rooms, and they were nice enough to let us, but we had to downgrade to a fan room, and they refunded the difference in price.

We left in the morning, and stayed at a place called "La Mer" at 450B a night, which was amazing, and ended up staying there for another 4 days.

I would not recommend the Chiang Mai Inn to anyone, and would pay the extra 100B for La Mer.

Would have to say this place actually rates a 2.5 rather than a 2 - it's "mediocre" rather than "poor".

For the plus side it has a great social scene for backpackers. The main entrance is a hive of activity and it's easy to meet other travellers there, have a drink and make plans for treks, activities and onward travel.

The down side is that the rooms (or, at least, the one I got) are really grotty - gloomy lighting, dirt and the occasional cockroach mean that I have seen prison cells that are more inviting.

Another problem is that the design of the building means that the afore mentioned social scene echoes all around. Having a chat and a laugh is a great part of the travelling experience. It's not so nice when you've just had a thirteen hour bus ride and just want to get some sleep and people are having what sounds like a party next to your head.

What really lets the place down is that for similar prices there are better places all around the Kachin Thep area, let alone across Chiang Mai. You will certainly have no problem getting better accommodation in Chiang Mai for 200 baht a night - especially with a bit of negotiation.

Conclusion: great place to meet people but all in all a bit of a [--].

We arrived by buss at 5.30 am and this nice lady who own or just works there welcomed us to stay in Chiang Mai Inn. It's location is great and our room was clean but otherwise the place sucked. They tried to sell us trekking and some other tours and when we didn't buy them, we got kicked out. They just told us day before that "we need your room tomorrow so you have to leave in the morning cause other people who are trekking now need it." So rude! I would never recommend this place to anybody. Ever.

The pictures are not exact, found the place dull and boring. They kicked us out after one day because we didnt book a tour with them, while we were sitting in the garden, they told us they were fully booked and we'd have to find somewhere else however people were coming in asking for rooms and they said yes. The staff were very rude just sitting on the laptops or phones, disinterested in helping us. The internet was really bad and when I asked for help the receptionist ignored me. The blankets are thin and the mornings are cold so take a sleeping bag if you stay here. I would not come back, theres better places to stay in chiang mai.

Nice place in the center of Chiang Mai, basic clean rooms with fan for only 200B, great backpackers atmosphere and helpful staff. The first day Mr. Jungle tried to sell us trek to the jungle, but we did´nt want, because it was really overprice (5500B for three day trek).
