“A backpackers haven”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 9, 2013

Stayed for 3 nights at Julies in January 2013 after being recommended by a friend. Arrived in Chaing Mai really early after an overnight bus ride from Bangkok. Luckily, we were so early, we managed to secure a room after check-out but I would advise you to book ahead as this place is hugely popular with travellers.

Rooms basic but you get what you pay for. For us, they were clean and in a great location. Awesome chill out area and really nice vibe which is what we were looking for. Met some really cool people and enjoyed a few beers on the uber cool rooftop bar.

Highly recommended for young travellers on a budget. Cheap and cheerful. No complaints (though the management were a tad moody!).

We had booked ahead (which I would recommend you do because most places get full really quickly). The rooms were really cramped and dingy, and it was a bit out of the way. We only stayed there one night before moving to a better place round the corner that cost a bit more. Stayed early Feb in a triple room with a fan, breakfast not included.

I really enjoyed staying at Julie's- cheap, basic, clean and a really good backpacker atmosphere created by the restaurant/ chill out area.

there was a free pool table and you could help yourself to drinks from the fridge and they had books for each room and you just wrote down what you had taken and then paid on check out- I think small things like this really add to the friendly atmosphere

the rooms were cheap we paid 70 baht a night each for a dorm for 2 of us...it turned out to be just a 2 bed dorm! so was basically a private room- just one bunk bed. it was clean and had a fan, there was absolutely no view from our window but that didnt matter. there was a really overpowering smell of air freshener but we found that quite funny and just opened the window and it wore off!

the room was basic but fine and all you need, the bathrooms were clean

there was a nice chill out area upstairs with hammocks and beds and we met lots of people in the downstairs area

good location within walking distance of everything you need and we also got a free pick up from the train station- they have songthaews that go to the station when the sleeper trains come in

would recommend booking in advance- we didn't do this often when travelling but had been told to do so by a couple who recommended the place to us and when we got there they were full so we only managed to stay as we had booked.

really friendly staff also and you can easily book through the front counter- we booked a cooking class through them and they were really helpful in arranging it for us

only complaint was the mattress was REALLY hard- but we found this a lot throughout thailand and also the bunk beds shook whenever the other person moved but again this happened in lots of dorms

Having stayed in Julies Guesthouse for just under a week we found that the staff were helpful and their travel agent was brilliant for booking trips such as an elephant day at Woody's Elephant Training which I would highly recommend. Price to stay is very cheap, best rooms going for about 7 pounds a night. Don't expect luxury as rooms are very basic and food is average however the atmosphere and location makes up for this.

Room Tip: I would definitely recommend going for the more expensive double rooms, at only £7 a night, as havin...

I stayed there last August during my Chiang mai trip. I heard a lot from other traveler so I went to stay there. it was reasonable place to fit in budget traveler like me.I had wonderful time staying with them.I wouldn't say their bathroom are clean though. But I didn't have much expectation. i went three days trek in Chiang mai. that was really great. I will recommend this place to my friend if some one is looking for cheap hostel in chiang mai.

We stayed there 3 nights and did a 3 days trekking with them.
It was a very cheap and a very good place, with a very good service, nice staff and a great atmosphere. Good location also.
We highly recommend it!

We found Julies to be great value for money. They booked all our trips all over Chiang Mai which was fantastic and the rooms were cheap also! The only problem we had was that some of the female staff were incredibly rude. They wouldn't answer our questions and frankly we were scared of them. The other staff members were friendly though! Wouldn't recommend the food here but go down the road to Mickeys which is great! Overall the rooms were clean which was good!
