Kavil Guesthouse
Ranked #98 of 393 Hotels in Chiang Mai
Reviewed June 5, 2013

Kavil Guesthouse is in a prime location for shops, restaurants, markets / bazaars and Thae Pae Gate - all of which are within walking distance (there is a yummy cafe that does breakfast / lunch within a minute's walk that is amazing!). There are also Thai cooking schools on the same road if you're looking to do that.

The Guesthouse is a bargain for those staying here and the wifi is also great; the rooms aren't spotless but then the most expensive one is about £10 per night so don't expect that! The bathroom is also rather small but again great for the price you're paying. The AC is probably the best thing about the room and in 35 deg. weather it was a god send. There is also a nice seating area outside which is great to sit and hang around in.

Lilli the owner is great at booking trips and recommending things to do in the area - upon welcoming us she provided us with a map of the area as well as showing us where everything is. She and her husband can also give you advice on how much you should pay for tuk tuk or red taxi journeys so that you don't get fleeced! I would recommend that people visit the Elephant Nature Park, which is a fabulous experience and eye opening to the plight of the Thai elephants, but Lilli will not recommend or book this for you (she tried to discourage us but 3 of our other friends really recommended it and we had pre-booked) - if you really want to go there the office is a 5 minute walk from where you can buy the tickets.

All in all great value for your money, but if you're looking to stay more than a few nights I would recommend going somewhere a bit nicer...

Very good location, good value for money, Quiet, friendly people, clean rooms, good Wi-fi. I've stayed there a few times before and will definitely go back there when visiting Chiang Mai again. I wish all guesthouses were like Kavil! keep it up!

We stumbled upon this lovely guesthouse through reading reviews on trip advisor. Perfect location in a quiet soi in the best part of old town. Close to the markets, nightlife and amenities. It is a max 10 min walk to the night bazaar and is a few mins walk to the towns most famous temples and museums. Lily who is your host is wonderful and will help you plan any day trip you are looking for and will also point out the things to do I the city. Food is good and served all day. Rooms are clean and tidy, bathrooms need a upgrade but this place is very affordable only 400baht for a twin aircon room. I just wish all guesthouses were this great and this is the best place I have stayed in SE Asia.

This is the bees knees in Chiang Mai. Lillie (?) and her man are that rare thing - Thais with a wicked sense of humour. Really helpful and friendly -as is their midget dog , named 'Cambodian Noodles' in English!
Big rooms, fan or A/C or both. Fantastic breakfast - we had a orchard full of fruit with cheese omelette with toast and filter coffee.
The street is quiet. They advise you to go out and buy your own choice of beer in the 711 if they don't have it.
Reservations are a bit hit and miss. I suspect that no record of ''reservations'' are kept and if a party of 12 turns up for a week, they will simply give the rooms away. I've watched them as they turned away loutish beer drinking young English lads even tho' I know they had rooms.
A definite gem and ridiculously cheap . How do they do it?

Room Tip: There are only twelve rooms - all are equally good. But top floor - without lift - may be little qu...

We stayed here for 7 nights in total. The owners were really friendly, the rooms are amazing value (300 baht for a large double) with views across chiang mai. They were very helpful at organising activities for us and offered discounts on the quoted price plus a free, delicious, breakfast on the morning of the activity. They also hold your room for you for when you get back from trekking. The guest house is located on a lovely little soy with plenty of choice of good value restaurants. We loved our stay at kavil!

My wife and I stayed here for a week and it was great. The owners (a really sweet older couple) were extremely helpful and friendly. The husband even showed us how he taught their adorable little chihuahua how to stand up and put her little paws together to say 'sa wa dee kaa'.

The street (soi) is wonderfully quiet at night, tucked away from the restaurants and markets, but amazingly only a 3-5 minute walk to more excitement. The rooms were simple, but clean.

Also, the breakfasts here are great!!! Don't miss them! We had eggs, toast, and fruit with filtered coffee numerous times and they were always made with care and looked and tasted great.

Room Tip: If you barge in there and demand a room, they may tell you they are full! Hanging out downstairs wit...

I just stayed in this guesthouse for one night. The only bad thing about my stay was that it wasn't long enough! Rooms were basic but clean. We had fresh towels and the bed linen had a really fresh clean smell, something that I have not experienced in accommodation in that price range.

Staff were very friendly and polite. WiFi connection was good, and the location was great. It is very close to the Sunday walking market, but it is far enough away so that you are not bothered by the noise. If I am ever back in Chiang Mai, I will stay here.
