The best hostel in South East Asia; the only hostel that has a real backpackers vibe! Spicythai has all the facilities that make a good hostel; friendly, helpful & informative staff; clean & spacious air con rooms; free super fast WiFi & internet terminals and free breakfast. There are activities organised every evening; bowling, clubs & bars, free cultural talks, free introduction to buddism and temple visits. Spicythai is a home away from home, leaving Spicythai is the hardest part. STAY HERE!

Sorry but the accommodation was completely feral at this hostel. Beds were saggy, bathrooms were disgusting and no locks provided for lockers. Location is good, away from the touristy area, and the staff seemed nice - but you can get much better value than this in Chiang Mai. Maybe I was too old for this place but I do not understand how it can get good reviews.

The place is humble but it's all you need, the best thing about it is the owner noon or nun, he was so helpful and organizing tours and taxis. His advice led us to the best places in Thailand. Plenty of great visors to meet and swap stories with. Highly recommended although locations is slightly far from the city it was sill worth it!

We had a great time at the Spicythai. The staff was extremely friendly and more than willing to show us around or even just give us a ride somewhere, like to the laundry matt! The hostel itself was very clean and spacious. They had a great selection of movies to watch and breakfast was included. It is a little bit further out of the main city, but easy to get to with a tuk tuk. And a lot more quieter than if it was in the city center!

Room Tip: The mix dorms are okay, but they sleep a lot of people. If you want it to be a bit quieter choose th...

When my friend and I first arrived she wasn't too impressed by our 6 bed dorm in a bit of a run down condition after our double bedded ensuite room in Bangkok, especially as the first roommate we met was a lizard running across the wall. This is definitely a hostel for serious backpackers, not those who want a bit of luxury. It seemed like a great place for solo travellers in particular as everyone was really friendly and there was always a lot going on.

Be warned - it is a bit far out from the centre of Chiang Mai, about an 80baht tuk tuk ride away - and in a small, quiet residential area, it gets very dark at night so I'd recommend taking a torch if you think you might be walking home alone at night.

Some nice bars in the area and Chiang Mai itself is an incredible place. Will definitely be going back, not sure if I'll stay somewhere closer to the centre next time though.

We loved spicy thai! We were there a few weeks ago and it was everything we wanted from a hostel. Its a great hostel for meeting people and Noom (the owner) is great at organizing outings for everyone (we went bowling and won a free nights stay!)
We also took a trip to Pai (just north of Chiangmai) and stayed at Spicy Pai - definitely worth doing! Noom organized for us all to stay there and rooms for us when we got back.
Definitely stay at this hostel, you won't be disappointed - you won't want to leave!

I love spicy thai! I was there in August 2011, i was travelling in thailand in a group of 6 we all loved this hostel. Everybody is so welcoming and there is a great family feel at spicythai. There are lots of nights out whereby everybody goes out together and has a great time, regardless of age/nationality etc. The owner Pong is great fun and makes sure everyones included. There is a nice living room with a flatscreen tv and hundreds of dvds, great to chill out in after a night out. It also includes breakfast which is cereal/bananas/toast. There are movie nights, and lots of sweet events, when we were there pong organised a lecture about asian history! I would also say that if you stay here you should most definately book the thai cookery course through the hostel, it was such a great experience, good value for money and hosted by a really lovely guy.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
In 2006, we created our Spicy Hostel that has since hosted thousands of very happy travelers... Do not miss your opportunity to experience the spiciness in Chiang Mai.Beginning in September 2006, we have shown this country what a real backpackers hostel is and how to run a great hostel. Rated No.2 in Asia 2007 and No.1 in Thailand 2008, Spicythai has really brought the backpackers hostel to life in Thailand. A group of young locals with lots of travel experiences and warm hearts have created each Spicy and have brought them to the top of the game in a very short time. Six years of success prove very well that we have been doing the right thing. Now Spicythai is in its new location: an even bigger and more beautiful house in a more convenient location, close to the Old City.Special Features at Spicythai;Apart from normal stuff that you will get at budget hostels such as free toiletries, a book swap, reference books, bed linens, parking, city maps, tour information, etc, we offer more including:- Strong and firm handmade bunk beds (no funny noises to annoy you while sleep)- AC in all dorms (we live in the city so AC is a good investment for climate and pollution)- Free coffee and tea with toast, butter and jams- Kitchen with free spices and oil- Original honesty system mini-bar with 24/7 easy access- Big-screen TV & home theater system with cable TV and an incredible collection of movies and TV series- Communal computers with high speed internet until midnight and 24/7 free WiFi- Free use of storage closet ... more   less
