We were in Chiang Mai for 5 days and 4 nights back in december 2013. We stayed there the whole 4 nights, rooms were very cleaned, continental breakfast was standard but always fresh, and most of all, Mr Kem and his wife were simply one of the best hosts we met in Thailand. They booked for us a full day cooking class and a 2 days trekking trip with discounts, helped us through our visit of the city, etc. They really made us feel like home. I would recommend this place with my eyes closed, definetly worth each baht.

We spent five days at Vanilla Place and we really enjoyed it. We had a spacious room in the last floor of the house. The atmosphere was pretty quiet and relaxing, although the house is situated pretty close to the city center (approximately a 15-20 minute walk). You can also walk to the night market which is just around the corner.
The owner Mr. Kem and his wife are very nice and helpful. He gave us a lot of advice on things to do around Chiang Mai. His restaurant recommendations were also really good (try Lemongrass and Riverside!) On our last day, he even made us breakfast at 5 am – didn’t make it easier to leave ;-) We had a great time at Vanilla Place and we would definitely stay there again!

For a budget-friendly guesthouse, look no further. My husband and I have pretty high standards (30-somethings from USA) and ended up staying an extra three nights at Vanilla Place for a total of 6! To echo what everyone else says, besides the great location, the reason this is better than any other place is the personal attention and concierge style service you get from Mr. Kem & his wife. We checked in and immediately got a highlighted map, he had a scooter delivered & picked up for us, arranged all of our travel, reservations & tours, coordinated laundry service... the list goes on. It's not a 5-star resort, but if you're looking for something comfortable, clean & convenient, it's perfect. Plus, the little touches do not go un-noticed... each day we had a delicious continental breakfast served until 11am (awesome), daily fresh towels, two new bottles of water in the room each day. Can't thank Mr. Kem, his wife, happy & his assistant enough for everything.

Recommendations nearby Vanilla Place: Lemongrass Restaurant, Bus Bar, Street Pizza & Zabai Massage.

Room Tip: For three nights we had room #42 (no window) but DID have a small window in the bathroom which was n...

This place is wonderful. Initially difficult to find so ask owners for thai directions! They are exceptionally nice and very helpful!

The rooms are immaculate though the walls are very thin so bring ear plugs! Breakfast is great too!

This guesthouse is a ten minute walk away from the center but very close to the night market!

We arrived at the Vanilla Place Guesthouse at around 8:30 a.m., after arriving in Chiang Mai on the overnight train. We were welcomed and given a room right away, even though normal check-in time isn't till the afternoon. We also were invited to have a bit of free breakfast, even though we would be staying for just the one night.

The owner was extremely helpful, asking what we were interested in and suggesting activities we could do. He will set up a taxi to take us wherever we want and we pay the driver directly. He was not pushy at all -- just helpful.

Our room was basic but clean and comfortable. There was plenty of hot water in the shower and the air conditioner worked fine.

The guesthouse is about a 20-minute walk to the old city of Chiang Mai. We arrived on a Sunday, so we were lucky to he able to participate in the Sunday night market. Not to be missed unless you are not comfortable in crowds. All kinds of goods and foods being sold everywhere you look.

We will return to the Vanilla Place Guesthouse in a week, after volunteering at the Elephant Nature Park.

We would like to thank Mr Kemm and his wife and staff for everything. We stayed here 2 years ago and because of their amazing hospitality we returned. My daughter had fallen and hurt herself - they went out their way to ensure she was safely taking care of. They really have hearts of gold and care about all their guests - the service is amazing. As an added bonus the location of the guest house is so convenient to everywhere. We are so looking forward to returning again on our next trip to Thailand. Thanks again and see you soon.

I stayed here with my boyfriend for five nights and not only was it the perfect location, 10 minute walk from the old city and close to the night market, but Mr. Kem, his wife and their staff are wonderful. They know all about Chaing Mai, the good places to eat and see. Also they give great discounts on day adventures though out the city. The rooms are simple but nice, exactly what is needed for a stay. There is daily towel service and they are able to provide you with laundry service as well, upon request. Thank you so much Mr. Kem, we can't wait to come see you again.
