The location can't be beat for the Sunday walking street. The rooms are beautifully decorated and very comfortable. As wonderful as all the amenities are in this hotel, the thing that REALLY made it special for us has been the staff.

We have stayed at U Chiang Mai three times over the years, and they have the most kind, compassionate, attentive helpful, WONDERFUL staff. The property is absolutely beautiful, and the breakfast they serve is FANTASTIC. The bar upstairs is comfy, classy, and reasonably priced (like everything in Chiang Mai). But man -- the people who work here are just fantastic! This is our favorite Chiang Mai hotel!

WE LOVE YOU, U CHIANG MAI!!!!

Room Tip: Although there are no elevators, I'd recommend a HIGH room facing the Wat across the street for...

We just stayed here for 3 nights, and I have to say that the experience was wonderful. The service is first rate--better than when I've stayed at the Four Seasons. The staff goes above and beyond to make sure that your stay is fantastic and they are all so helpful and friendly. Even though the Sunday market is right outside the front steps, you'd never know it and we were in a room on the ground floor. It truly is an oasis from the hustle and bustle.

I think the title says it all really. Everything wasn't perfect - our room faced onto the side wall of the next block so we had no view and the a/c was noisy at times - but the quality of the accommodation / attention to detail and the level of service more than made up for any minor problems. It's little things like the way that they ask you to choose your soap fragrance on check-in and then ensure that the same fragrance of shower gel / shampoo is in the bathroom by the time you reach your room that demonstrate the quality of the service here.

The decor throughout the hotel is very moody, stylish and chic and the furnishings are of a high quality, but it is the staff that really raise this hotel above its competitors. Without exception they are friendly, helpful and courteous and go out of their way to ensure that their guests have an enjoyable stay. When we asked if someone could look at our noisy a/c unit they apologised profusely for the problem and had someone check it immediately - and when they couldn't fix it they offered to move us to another room next day. They were so apologetic and concerned about our wellbeing that by the time we'd finished discussing the options I actually felt as though I wanted to apologise to them for mentioning it!! I can't praise the staff highly enough for their professionalism and their genuine interest in their guests, they really were superb (eg. nice touches like remembering something we'd mentioned in passing that we were planning to do and later asking us how we'd enjoyed it).

The location is ideal, central but quiet and because it's on the Sunday Walking Street all song tao drivers know where it is so it's never a problem getting back in the the evenings - and of course there's the Sunday Market (which now also happens on Saturdays too), which is great fun.

One potential negative, although not unusual for a 4* hotel, is the cost of laundry services. This was exhorbitant by Thai standards - the laundry around the corner washes / irons 1kg of clothes for 30THB, about half the cost charged by the hotel for a single item!

We stayed in a ground floor Deluxe room (105) with direct pool access from the terrace, but all of the rooms looked lovely. Just be aware that rooms 105, 205 and 305 have no view and get no direct sunlight because of their position facing the side wall of the next block, although this may not be a bad thing because it does mean that they're very quiet & private.

I absolutely loved this hotel. My husband does a lot of corporate travel as part of his job and he is very fussy about hotels, yet even he raved on about U Chiang Mai for the rest of our holiday. This is an excellent boutique hotel which thoroughly deserves its 4* rating, and although it's not cheap it's worth every penny. We wouldn't consider staying anywhere else in Chiang Mai.

Room Tip: Rooms 105, 205 & 305 are Deluxe so bogger than standard but face onto the side wall of the block...

Great, friendly service. Beautiful rooms. Perfect location. Free bicycles. Lots of restaurants nearby and right in the middle of the amazing Sunday night market. Breakfast selection is nice. Taxi from airport around 15 min and 120 baht. Would definitively come back!

Couldn't have asked for a better stay in Chiang Mia. My fiancé and I spent two days at this beautiful boutique hotel, with the sweetest staff and in a great location. Super clean and modern, and with tons of character, I would definitely stay here again!!

The U-Chiang Mai a small boutique style hotel almost bang in the centre of the old town. The lobby is 100 year old wooden house but the rest of the hotel is much more modern and minimalist with black marble like floors and black furniture. The walls are purple and because the rooms have big windows it is very light. All rooms seem to have a smallish balcony with a comfortable cushioned bench. I had a superior room in order to have a bath tub as well as a shower. The water pressure was not great so the bath tub took a while to fill up on the 2nd floor. I don't know if the pressure would be better on a lower floor. The sink had a very small domed ledge behind it on which to put toiletries. That was the most badly designed thing about the room because there was very little shelf space to put toiletries on. They provided four very large bath towels which made a nice change from the usual postage stamp towels you often get in Europe. Having a choice of scented soaps was a nice touch. Cotton buds and cotton wool balls were only replaced once halfway through my week long-stay. There were 100s of little ants on the little shelf in the bathroom. Oddly one night I discovered that the housemaid had managed to make the large double bed with a single sheet! A quick call to housekeeping resolved the problem but it was still somewhat surprising that the maid could make the bed in this way.

There was a large safe capable of taking a laptop and various other items, masses of hanging and cupboard space and a very comfortable sofa (which I am guessing there wouldn't be space for in a standard room). The room was missing a desk/dressing table which would have been convenient because the little tables they provided were covered with other items (chess set, flower vase, water etc). Wi-Fi was free and efficient but necessitated constant logging in which was tiresome. The air conditioning turned off with the rest of the power in the room on leaving so the room was often very hot on return and aircon had to be turned on manually rather than coming on automatically with your key card. The hotel could set up a DVD player for you in the room but it did not play European region DVDs. There was a large flat screen TV with several English language channels.

The hotel receptionists were extremely friendly and helpful at organising a driver to take me to the lantern festival at Mae Jo and organising taxis or a driver to take me sightseeing. Breakfast was more than adequate with several different cooked to order choices including omelettes, fried eggs or Thai or oriental options ordered off the menu and a small buffet with fruits, cereals, bread, toast and pastries. The pool area was small and quite shady but it was nice being in a small hotel where everything was easy distance away. Location wise it was approximately 15 min walk to the Thadpae gate which is the main focus point for the Yi Peng festival parade. The hotel was perfectly situated for the Sunday night market because it was in the middle of the street where it was taking place. There were lots of cheap options for food up and down the street. For a hotel in the town centre it was very quiet but there was no view from the room - apart from the top of a temple.

Room Tip: The superior rooms are much larger and have a really comfortable sofa as well as a bathtub. There ar...

I stayed here for 5 nights. I arrived on a Sunday night which meant that the taxi wasn't able to drop me at the hotel because of the Sunday night market -- no big deal.

Once at the hotel, check-in was completed quickly and with typical Thai friendliness (including selecting what fragrance soap I wanted in my room!).

The location was perfect, right in the centre of the old town with plenty of restaurants, spas etc. close by.

The room itself was great and spotlessly clean. I particularly like sitting out on the balcony over looking the pool with a nice cold beer after busy day exploring.

Probably the only thing I can think of as a very slight negative was the limited choice of cooked breakfast items.
