The U-Chiang Mai a small boutique style hotel almost bang in the centre of the old town. The lobby is 100 year old wooden house but the rest of the hotel is much more modern and minimalist with black marble like floors and black furniture. The walls are purple and because the rooms have big windows it is very light. All rooms seem to have a smallish balcony with a comfortable cushioned bench. I had a superior room in order to have a bath tub as well as a shower. The water pressure was not great so the bath tub took a while to fill up on the 2nd floor. I don't know if the pressure would be better on a lower floor. The sink had a very small domed ledge behind it on which to put toiletries. That was the most badly designed thing about the room because there was very little shelf space to put toiletries on. They provided four very large bath towels which made a nice change from the usual postage stamp towels you often get in Europe. Having a choice of scented soaps was a nice touch. Cotton buds and cotton wool balls were only replaced once halfway through my week long-stay. There were 100s of little ants on the little shelf in the bathroom. Oddly one night I discovered that the housemaid had managed to make the large double bed with a single sheet! A quick call to housekeeping resolved the problem but it was still somewhat surprising that the maid could make the bed in this way.

There was a large safe capable of taking a laptop and various other items, masses of hanging and cupboard space and a very comfortable sofa (which I am guessing there wouldn't be space for in a standard room). The room was missing a desk/dressing table which would have been convenient because the little tables they provided were covered with other items (chess set, flower vase, water etc). Wi-Fi was free and efficient but necessitated constant logging in which was tiresome. The air conditioning turned off with the rest of the power in the room on leaving so the room was often very hot on return and aircon had to be turned on manually rather than coming on automatically with your key card. The hotel could set up a DVD player for you in the room but it did not play European region DVDs. There was a large flat screen TV with several English language channels.

The hotel receptionists were extremely friendly and helpful at organising a driver to take me to the lantern festival at Mae Jo and organising taxis or a driver to take me sightseeing. Breakfast was more than adequate with several different cooked to order choices including omelettes, fried eggs or Thai or oriental options ordered off the menu and a small buffet with fruits, cereals, bread, toast and pastries. The pool area was small and quite shady but it was nice being in a small hotel where everything was easy distance away. Location wise it was approximately 15 min walk to the Thadpae gate which is the main focus point for the Yi Peng festival parade. The hotel was perfectly situated for the Sunday night market because it was in the middle of the street where it was taking place. There were lots of cheap options for food up and down the street. For a hotel in the town centre it was very quiet but there was no view from the room - apart from the top of a temple.

Room Tip: The superior rooms are much larger and have a really comfortable sofa as well as a bathtub. There ar...

I stayed here for 5 nights. I arrived on a Sunday night which meant that the taxi wasn't able to drop me at the hotel because of the Sunday night market -- no big deal.

Once at the hotel, check-in was completed quickly and with typical Thai friendliness (including selecting what fragrance soap I wanted in my room!).

The location was perfect, right in the centre of the old town with plenty of restaurants, spas etc. close by.

The room itself was great and spotlessly clean. I particularly like sitting out on the balcony over looking the pool with a nice cold beer after busy day exploring.

Probably the only thing I can think of as a very slight negative was the limited choice of cooked breakfast items.

Great location and very friendly service. Convenient as sunday market is on the same street. Room is clean, a bit small in terms of its price though.

The 24 hours gym is convenient too. Walking distance to massage places and restaurants.

We stayed here for 3 nights. Loved the location! Wonderful cafes and massage spas just adjacent to the hotel. We loved the Pacamara Cafe just 3 shops away for its fantabulous coffee! You don't have to walk far to find great food. Rooms are clean and comfortable and staff very courteous, always with a smile. The pool is a bit small and the water was cold while we were there. Of course, the Sunday Night market is just outside, so convenient. Breakfast area is rather small, so you have the option of eating breakfast at the lobby if there are no tables. It is not a big buffet breakfast, you order your hot main meal from the menu. The breads and pastries and cereals are free flow. But do note breakfast can be had anytime of the day and anywhere in the hotel! Loved the decor of the hotel.

Fantastic smells, they thought of everything in the room. The decor combines northern Thai style with modern chic. Right in the center of town. Nice night market on the weekends which is less pressure and more Thais that the actual Night Bazaar. I will most definitely visit here again. I am actively looking forward to it.

Room Tip: It is a walk up hotel - but the higher rooms have a view of the Chedi across the street.

Came here last year and was so delighted that we made this the end point of our 4 week indochina tour. We requested the same room as last year (104 deluxe room) that is next to the pool on the ground floor, however, last year the hotel was much quiter and this year being busy made the room less private and peaceful, particularly some unruly children running right past the room and sunbeds. If we do another vist will request a 3rd floor room for more privacy and peace.

Service levels remain as efficient and courteous as before and most of the time the hotel is a tranquil oasis of charm and peace.

Clearly timing a quieter time to visit would be advantageous, we were here during the Constitution Day long weekend, busy time!

Room Tip: If peace and privacy is an issue, be wary of getting ground floor room near the pool.

The moment you check into and then ultimately leave the U Chiang Mai is a perfect experience where everyone is willing to help out in any way! They are warm, friendly, and have the answers to help you get through the city! They even assisted us in getting a painting packed and parceled back to us in the US! Stepping into the U is a very tranquil and relaxing experience that we truly appreciated!

We stayed in a deluxe room with our own affinity pool and the accommodations were superb. There is some mosquitos and geckos to contend with, but let the staff know and they will help to manage these kinds of issues.

The location is right on the main street that runs through the old city of Chiang Mai and will allow you to get to wherever you need to go. Plenty of Tuk Tuks and Red vans stop by there.

Also, next door is a very good reflexology place, and a Wicked tailor! They made our group suits custom made and delivered as expected. Ask for Pherooz.
