“One day elephant camp and mahout training”

Panda Tour & Trekking
Reviewed December 29, 2012 via mobile

We booked the full day elephant camp and mahout training and had a brilliant day. After a long drive up to the elephant camp and stopping at a market to buy bananas, we arrived at the camp. At first sight the chains looked upsetting, but spending a whole day there you see how well they are looked after and how often they get out to walk down the river and bath in the water. We learnt some elephant language and practised getting on and off the elephants as the mahouts do. We had a lovely curry dish for lunch. We then took the trek down the river to wash the elephants, then gave them a mud bath! At the end you get a free certificate and a chance to buy a framed photo for 200 baht. I would recommend the trip to anyone, it was a highly enjoyable experience.

We booked a one day trek through the hill tribe villages from an agent next to our hotel, and were assured that the trip would go even if there were only the two of us. The following morning we were packed into a truck with 10 others and drove to the hills, where we started to walk. After an hour it became apparent that we were not to see any hill tribes - only lots of jungle and a waterfall pool for swiming (but we had no gear). Clearly Panda had attached the two of us to a different tour in the same area, for their own convenience and without telling us (or the booking agent). We complained, and after considerable hassle we, managed to get a 50% refund - for a wasted day; not only was the jungle trek not what we wanted, it was badly guided and not at all interesting.

We booked a 1 day trek which included an elephant ride, rafting, visit to hill tribe etc. The day started with a visit to butterfly/orchid farm. There were 2 butterflies visible in farm - 20 minute there was too long. The operator was unprofessional and didn't tell us what we were doing unless asked. Equipment was old and broken for rafting. Our whitewater rafting guide spoke no English, and we had almost no training - he gave us no directions and we ended up going backwards over a rapid. The people who went bamboo rafting capsized because of to many people on raft after being told they could take cameras. The elephant camp didn't seem a happy place. Lunch was very basic (there was a pig pen attached to the kitchen). We got to our hotel almost 2 hours late at almost 7.30pm. We spent over 4 hours on bench seats in truck transport which was very uncomfortable. We enjoyed the company of the other guests. Choose another company - there are better options.

The day started with a briefing of how to talk to the elephants and how to get on top of the elephant. We then had a yummy curry lunch. In the afternoon we washed and bathed the elephants in a lake and a mud bath.

Reading the comments below I was really uncertain as to what it would be like and for the amount of money£100 for two. A lot of money in thailand. However the unorganisation meant we got to know the locals and the elephants properly. I haven't laughed so much ever. We had so much fun with the guide and elephants. I would definitely recommend. If your more of a chilled out person always ready for the unexpected this is definitely a trip for you. Amazing and the elephants were very well looked after. And there's a baby elephant there who is 7 months. So cute!!!

Booked for the 1-day trip "Mahout training and elephant care". The elephants seem to be treated very well even if nacelles are used by tourists who book for 1hour riding and are not confident in riding the elephant directly on its back.

The day begins with the feeding and learning of basic mahout techniqs. After lunch, you ride the elephant for 1 hour (1 elephant for 2/3 people), wash it in the river and go to a mud bath. Unforgettable.
Good point : the staff can take pictures with your own camera during bath and riding.
