“Quality in almost all aspects!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 27, 2013 via mobile

Overall a top hotel. Excellent service and quality. Rooms are nice, comfy and clean.

Only setback for this gem is the terrible waiting for the lifts. This hotel prides itself with a 23rd floor lobby and a wonderful bar/restaurant on the top floor, but the lifts are the spoiling factor. Long waiting times just doesn't go well.

1) Booked the room online.....was a breeze...prices were a little high as there was a convention the following day
2) Large and comfortable well appointed rooms
3) Awesome location for a tourist/shopper as in a couple of mins after changing elevators you would end up in Bangkok's largest mall CENTRAL WORLD
4) I had a flight at 8 pm the day i was checking out and requested for a LATE CHECK out but the response was curt and rude...guess that is to discourage late check outs...but the check in / out timings are just like all hotels in Bangkok
5) ONLY NEGATIVE : ABSOLUTELY NO PERSONAL TOUCH...

Room Tip: Go for a Premium room and above...cheers

Although a very large hotel, which cost a fortune to build the position is not that great.
Large rooms etc, but every time you needed to go to reception or other areas it was back into the lift. As the set up of the hotel was so vast you found yourself having to go from one lift to the
other, to reach all floors, very confusing. Must say the breakfast was great, but if going back to Bangkok we would give this place a miss. It did not help that after the 12hr flight and arriving at about 8 o/c in the morning, hanging and in dire need of sleep to be told we could not have our room until 2 in the afternoon. After discussion that came down to 10.30 but still far too long.
Damage done.

Room Tip: Make sure your travel company has booked access on arrival.

The drama started with the reservation direct to the hotel over the phone. The reservation officer got my name , contact number , email address and credit card number incorrect several times. She then said that I would receive confirmation within 30 mins. It did not come at all.
The next day I emailed the hotel reservations to query my reservation. 5 days later I still have not been replied too.. So then I called the hotel reservations again, the booking name was still incorrect and the contact details were incorrect, thank goodness I called!
The day of arrival, we checked in a 330pm - we went to our rooms and they had other people in them. Another massive let down.
Reception staff apologised with a basket of fruit ( which we never received) ...
2nd room (aka second chance to get it right) the rooms stunk of cigarettes ( we asked form2 non smoking rooms) ... FAIL again...
3rd time lucky....finally an empty room with no other guests in which did not smell like smoke.
But still it looked nothing like the photos on the website.. :(
First impressions definitely not a good one. Never coming back here again.

Stayed three nights to attend a meeting. It was convenient to stay right next to the meeting venue. Other than that, I cannot convince myself why I would choose to stay the in my next visit. Location is not convenient. You have to walk 15 minutes under sizzling sun to reach Skytrain. Taxis rarely come. Taxi drivers do not know its exact location because the hotel is hidden behind shopping malls and high rises. Architectural plan is such that you have to take one lift to 23rd floor and then change to another lift to go to your room. Elevators are very slow, only four lifts serving such a large convention hotel. Room design is very funny, with round bath tub placed in the middle of bathroom area and you have to spread shower curtain around your body to take shower. I would have fired the designer if I were the hotel owner for such inefficient design. Cleaning shower curtain each day would be a headache for housekeeper. BreakfAst was a mediocre. So many group tourists at breakfast... Overall I would not recommend the hotel to my friends visiting Bangkok...

CGCW, General Manager at Centara Grand at CentralWorld, responded to this review, February 19, 2013
Dear TripAdvisor Reviewer

Thank you for your comments which we appreciate and shall look into in detail.
Out of our 505 rooms only 46 have the round bathtubs you mentioned which is appreciated by many guests; our main inventory of rooms does have a conventional bathtub and separate shower. We are currently upgrading our elevator computerized efficiency system which will shorten the waiting times. There is an air-conditioned route through the CentralWorld Mall linked to the sky bridge leading to the Sky train (open from 10am to 10pm). The Taxi situation all over Bangkok at peak hours can be a challenge and is beyond our control. We nevertheless have a fleet of limousines standby 24hours.
We do hope we can welcome you back to the Centara Grand at CentralWorld and I would be most honored to show you our improvements.

Yours sincerely,
Robert Maurer-Loeffler

Having always stayed at the Sukhumvit area on our Bangkok visits, we now decided to stay near Siam square instead. We wanted proximity to shopping, an outdoor pool and a room with a view over central Bangkok. In that sense, Centara ticked all the right boxes: an executive suite at 45th floor, several malls within minutes' walk and a tranquil pool area to cure jetlag at. Nice.

What failed to impress us, however, was the ambiance. We felt the hotel has a total lack of personality, the kind of something that you'll remember it by and that makes you want to come back. Although this is often the case with such big hotels, it doesn't mean it should be that way (benchmark for big hotels with soul: Langham Place in Hong Kong).

Also, as many have stated, the hotel is showing signs of wear and tear despite being relatively new. This is most visible in the rooms and by the pool where some of the planks are bordering on dangerous in their current state! But this is by no means to say the rooms or public areas were dirty - quite the contrary actually - just that a bit of fixing and furniture replacement is badly needed.

On a positive note, the Red Sky bar on the rooftop is impressive. The views are spectacular and no complaints about the cocktails either. The live jazz band was a nice touch, too.

Despite the shortcomings, I would've probably rated Centara a 4* if our checkout had been quick and efficient. But it wasn't. The staff at the executive lounge seemed very unorganized and spoke inadequate English, and when I was finally presented the bill it included one day's rooms charge although I had prepaid the whole 3-day stay. Then, after fixing the bill, another 10 minutes were spent downstairs with the staff wondering where they've stored our luggage at... Honest mistakes I'm sure, but unacceptable at a supposedly five-star hotel.
