The Banyan Tree Hotel has thoughtfully employed a sharp-suited platoon of human satnavs to guide you from ground level up to rooftop:
At strategic elevator levels, these polished security guys - who look like hitmen for GQ magazine - also subtly screen you for dress code (I'm only surprised they don't ask you to pass a retina scan)
Once your sartorial suitability is beyond question, you are free to enjoy a slow, comfortable screw at the fêted Moon bar.
Most of the patrons do make an effort, and are appropriately glam; some, sadly, look like they're dressed for Nando's.
It should come as no surprise that this is a dazzling venue for a romantic dinner; it's also the perfect setting for a Secret Agent to execute the bad guy, before abseiling over the edge.
Agreed, the food doesn't live up to the surroundings; but it's the same at every other rooftop bar in Bangkok.
The food isn't the point.
Vertigo is an enduring Bangkok icon: of course it's overpriced, over-hyped, and slightly synthetic; but it's also fab, and it's fun - go enjoy !
