Stayed in the Aurum 15-20 Feb 09. Room was roomy, clean, comfortable. Bath was modern and well appointed. Cable TV, in-room safe, ample air conditioning, king size bed. Location is excellent, within walking distance of Wat Pho (reclining Buda), Grand Palace, China Town, Flower Market, nite markets, restaurants and bus-boat stops for river travel. Breakfast is generous, served in outdoor cafe. Riverfront site affords interesting views (ask for river-view room). Staff is helpful with sightseeing info. Internet available a nominal cost. Front desk is 24/7. Room rate was $125USD or discounted to $113USD if paid in cash upon arrival.

So pleased we chose Aurum River Place, the location couldn't be better, Aurum River Place itself is a cool welcoming oasis down a relatively quiet side street , set back from the river, sparkling clean rooms, supremely comfortable beds, quality decor, we were more than happy with the lovely river view from room 201, We could have found a cheaper good quality large (impersonal) hotel with pool (which would have been a welcome respite) but all things considered, I would return to Aurum without hesitation.. the staff are lovely, and you know what they say - location, location, location. (note: this is NOT the location if you want banging-bangkok nightlife..)
Aurum is 5 mins walk from Tha Tien Pier (and then 20 mins by boat to the sky-train), 5 mins from Grand Palace, 5 mins from night-flower market (highly recommended) and 5 mins from Wat Po... allowing access to this extraordinarily beautiful temple and the Reclining Buddha just as it opens at 8am, magical, then slip into the cool space of the Wat Po Thai Massage school set in the temple grounds...bliss....and you are leaving just as most day trippers are arriving. 5 mins from Arun Residence which has great sunset views of Wat Arun (temple of love) from the 4th floor cocktail bar, and interesting though pricey frenchXthai menu in the Arun Deck restaurant. .
If you do choose to stay at Aurum, check out their list of the 15 or so restaurants nearby - our top tip... dress-up and take a 10 minute taxi or tuk-tuk to Methvali Sorndaeng (opposite the Democracy Monument)- for excellent value Thai-fine dining, wonderful, stylish, beautifully rendered live big-band music, just a divine experience in Bangkok.

This was the first hotel of our month long trip in Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia.
It is a small hotel situated near the flower market and lots of the temples. It is not particularly close to the city centre, skytrain or PatPong; these are a 20 minute taxi ride away. It does not have a bar or restaurant, but both can be found nearby. Taxi drivers and tour guides don't know it, so you will need the address to be written down for you if wandering into town.
It does have delightful rooms, staff, (some speaking very good English) and an air of tranquility. It is clean and beautifully presented. It has free internet. A super base to explore Bangkok from.
I will certainly stay here again

Staying in Aurum the River Place during Christmas, we were so happy with the river view room, as well as the convenient location to explore around the old Bangkok area. You can either walk or take a cheap tuk tuk ride to all the old areas like the Grand Palace and Kao San. It is so easy to locate as it is just next to Wat Po, highly recommend having thai traditional massage in Wat Po (The origin of Thai massage!!).
In the hotel, we were so glad to have helpful staff translate the addresses in Thai of where we would like to go. That helped us a lot!! Breakfast was good as we can select our own and we enjoyed the breakfast in the little cozy cafe by the river! You even can take water taxi to/ from the hotel if you want to have a cool relaxing ride.
The room we stayed in offered a different beautiful view of the temples across the river between day and night. The rooms themselves were very clean and the size was good for two people. The price was very reasonable compared to other riverside hotels especially for our Christmas stay.
I highly recommend this hotel to people who have want to get away the usual neon city life and explore the "real" Bangkok.

Following the advice of other travelers, we requested - and got - room 401. It is, indeed, the best room in the house, with a gorgeous river view. My sons were in room 403, a room without a view. Both rooms were gorgeous, and when you consider the price and the location, the view isn't such a big deal - presumably, you aren't going to spend all day inside gazing out the window.

Teakwood floors, luxe beds with silk covered pillows, adequate storage space, clean bathrooms... we loved it. An easy, 3 minute walk to Wat Pho, and a 15 minute walk to the Grand Palace. There's a 7-11 round the corner, and a no-name breakfast place around the corner, just past the Coconut-something Cafe, that serves amazing food. No one speaks English though - just point and say "same same". (Aurum serves a pretty good brekkie at an outdoor cafe next door, but if you're looking for variety...) Staff is friendly and helpful, but not obsequious. They'll call you a cab, rent you a laptop, help you with info... if you ask.

Do not stay in this area if you're looking for nightlife. There isn't any. No restaurants nearby either. Plenty of carts and vendors though, and we made the most of those. Cheap and delish!
