I have seen mixed reviews of this hotel and as we had been reading Trip Advisor knew that they were doing construction work during the day. Personally as we were out during the day so it didn't bother us. We loved the unusual and charming rooms, the four poster bed was really comfortable and I loved the silky robes. It was refreshing from the normal and bland room templates used for major brand hotels. But if that's what you want don't stay here. For the money, we paid $72 with breakfast via Agoda it was hard to beat.

Breakfast is served in what seems like an old ballroom with chandeliers and is light and airy, a nice place to start the day. A good selection of Asian and Western dishes.

The front desk staff were pretty uninspiring and characterless unlike the hotel itself.

The location is not bad, not far from the palace and near a ferry terminal but a bit further from the action of Sukhimvit road, but easily accessible by tuk tuk. It really comes alive at night with the outdoor seafood eateries.

It would be good to have a pool but for the price it is really good.

We stayed in Shanghai Mansion on 2nd December to the morning of 4th December. The hotel is in China town which is an exciting place for foodies but does smell and there isn't much there if your not. It is close to the excellent river boat service though. So the hotel is lovely, has a lot of little touches e.g smells of peppermint when you walk in, Chinese music playing, jazz band. The rooms are lovely too and my partner arranged for something special for our anniversary and they put swan towels on the bed and petals. The breakfast was good although we had eaten the street food the night before including the most delicious tom yum soup ever that was very spicy and so we wanted plain western food so had croissant, egg and bacon and fruit which was lovely. They provide a street food tour map and this was really good fun and so tasty and cheap - seafood, dim sum, dumplings etc.

The downsides were the rooms are very noisy as walls are thin so in the afternoon we arrived they had some renovation work happening and so could hear drilling when trying to sleep - an email to warn us would have been curtious as we would probably not stayed there if we had known as wanted the room as a relaxing stop gap after our long journey. Also the cleaners were hoovering at 9am and woke us. The second downfall was that the day time receptionists didn't speak very good English which meant when we were trying to ask advice they couldn't help us. Apart from this all staff were excellent and very helpful. Especially the night porters who helped us with our bags at 4am and the lovely lady's at breakfast.

Major disappointment. We booked this hotel for the tea room and Cotton restaurant/bar, both of which were under construction, which we were not warned about. In fact, the entire hotel appeared to be undergoing major renovation, and there was constant noise and workers all over the hotel. Rooms were ok, but the poured concrete floors took away from the overall experience and certainly didn't make for a cozy or "luxury" atmosphere. Design was nice but hotel overall was incredibly run down. Staff were very friendly but ultimately rather unhelpful. Crappy part of town - would suggest avoiding Chinatown if you want a more authentic Thai experience. Would not stay here again or recommend to anyone. If I were to do it again, I'd spring for the extra $10-15 a night that could have landed us a MUCH better hotel.

We live and work in Bangkok and recently stayed at Shanghai Mansion on a "staycation".

Firstly, we were extremely disappointed that we were not informed in advance that the hotel is currently undergoing major renovations and also that the well-reviewed "Cotton Bar & Restaurant" was closed (one of the reasons we selected this hotel).

Most unacceptable was that we were woken on a Sunday morning by extremely loud construction (angle-grinders and jackhammers) that persisted throughout the entire duration of our stay, reverberating through the entire area where all rooms are located. The staff were informed, and workman stopped once (for 25mins) before resuming with their work again.

Hotel rooms were dark (no natural light at all, despite the booking saying "city view"), and the decor is probably just a matter of taste. There were mosquitoes buzzing around, also the plumbing did not seem to be quite up to scratch either. There was one very helpful Thai gentleman, however the female staff were not very responsive or friendly.

Would not reccommend this hotel based on the fact that management should have closed business during construction that would be so disruptive to guests.

Not great value for Bangkok hotels - many other options within this price range are far better.

Room Tip: No rooms have natural light, nor city views.

What we like about the hotel:-
- The deco has a great "WOW" factor when we entered the hotel, the room was just beautiful and romantic.
- Bed is big and very comfortable to sleep on.
- Service is great overall except the balding guy at the reception (He made us feel that he only cares about money not us). Tui who serves breakfast deserves a compliment, she is very friendly and attentive. We feel that she really takes care of her customers. Thank you Tui, you truly made a difference in our stay at the hotel :-)
- Great location with great food around all night long. Try T&K seafood at the corner and Chinese desserts "Sweet Time" across the street.

What we think can be improved:-
- We found a dead fly on our bed upon our arrival. I know this can be a big deal for some people.
- Design flaws - The basin is in the room rather than the bathroom which is inconvenient since there is no douche in the bathroom itself. The faucets were mounted too far away from the basin and it causes the water to splash on the table top and wallpaper. This is also party because the round basin is small considered the high faucets. We had to put towels around the basin to soak up the water splash. Perhaps a big deep square basin might help fix the splash problem without having to hack any walls.
- Install some towel rails in the bathroom in case the guest needs to dry their undergarments or laundry in the bathroom..
- Bed headboard is against windows rather than solid wall, not very good fengshui as you are at a vulnerable position when you are asleep. So we move our heads when we sleep :-)

The hotel was nice. We didn't really have any issues, so I can't comment on hotel management. The breakfast was plentiful and had Chinese, Thai, and Continental options. The servers were very responsive, but the coffee was awful. Luckily, on your way out of the hotel there's a Coffee Bean (coffee shop), with good expresso coffee. We arrived late and they were able to accommodate our late arrival. There was a Chinese wedding party the first morning we were there, not sure what that is, but there was a letter in our room notifying us. Unfortunately, a Chinese wedding party meant a large party in the atrium with people yelling and laughing at 7 am. The rooms had everything you needed, but they had a weird layout and they were very dark. The king bed was also crammed into the corner. And the blanket was for a queen size bed, so it was short on one of the sides. There was also constant construction that made it impossible to relax. The area around the hotel is also loud, dirty, noisy, and Chinese. We were close to sights by taxi (10-15 min), but I would stay at another area next time.

We absolutely adored this hotel. The charm and service was unsurpassed. We stayed on the second floor. Room had everything we could want. Tub was huge. Shower worked perfectly. Mini bar had soft drinks and snacks and was free. The only negatives would be internet on our floor was iffy, so we had to keep changing log ins. The Cotton on the third floor was closed for remodeling, but it was open in front of the hotel. The bartender was fantastic, the cocktails great and very affordable and the jazz band WA great. Overall this is one of the nicest places we've enjoyed.
