“for a different experience of Bangkok”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 11, 2013

I was looking for something different in this city of modern soulless hotels. Shanghai Mansion was a lovely surprise, even after seeing many photos of the place. It has been beautifully decorated and furnished and has a wonderful old Asian ambience. The room, though very small, was filled with lovely detail, colour and pattern. I loved the birdcage in the bathroom and the old red saloon style doors, dark wood four poster bed and coloured glass window panes. the restaurant was average but three are so many places to eat in Chinatown that this wasn't a problem for me. Walking the streets at night is a lively colourful experience and the fresh pomegranate juice is amazing. The covered street markets are jam packed with all sorts of things but especially good for textiles and trimmings. It's not a great location if you want to go anywhere outside of Chinatown as the road is constantly jammed and the train station is a long walk away. Still, it is a very different experience to the rest of Bangkok.

We really liked this hotel- the staff are lovely & we were greeted with thai tea and cold flannels! The room was beautiful, had a safe and a fridge and everything you need.

The buffet breakfast was good too with lots of options.

Unfortunately for us the location wasn't great. We soon realised that Chinatown is quite far from the centre of Bangkok and its quite hard to use the metro or sky train easily from here.

The hotel lobby also has a really irritating 'tour guide' who sits there pretty much 24/7 and pesters you everyone u leave or come back to the hotel- we found this really off putting especially for our 1st few nights in Thailand. Chinatown is pretty hectic and claustrophobic and we found it a bit daunting to begin with.

Overall a brilliant hotel just not in the right place for what we were looking for.

Good bits - the hotel itself is good. The lobby is nice and so are the rooms. We stayed in the small room which has stained glass windows. The bed was big and comfy. The decor was tasteful and it was clean. They provide complimentary water, some snacks and cola - these were stocked up every day. We did not eat at the restaurant so can't comment on the food. The restaurant has a Jazz band playing on most nights - we really enjoyed that on our last day. The staff were nice and helpful.
Bad bits - the location - at least for us! The hotel is within 15 minutes walking distance from the Hua Lompong train station but in the heat it felt very long. There were no decent restaurants nearby - mostly stalls and street food.
If china town and street food is your thing then this would be a great place to stay; if not then look elsewhere as there is not much to do around here.

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights and wow!! The staff are so helpful, and attentive. The hotel itself is beautiful and calm, you forget about the caos that is china town. The room was gorgeous, with complimentary mini bar, cofy beds, silk robes and slippers, great powered shower. Breakfast is available, with a large selection which sets you up for the day. The Bar in the hotel has a jazz band most nights, I would definitely recommend people to listen, They were great. Lovely to have a cocktail and tap your toe to some Jazz in the evening

This is an oasis away from the hustle and bustle, heat and noise from Chinatown. Furnishings are very cool, rooms are funky. Close to great eating spots and the visuals that make Chinatown. We didn't eat as we were only on an overnight stop, but the front could use some work.

Absolutely enjoyable, very nice service, and good location - that was our takeaway after staying twice at Shanghai Mansion.
The rooms are individually designed with much detail and are very clean. The shower is superb.
The food was good with a lot of choices. Overall very good value for money.

I've stayed at the shanghai mansion several times over
the last five years...and have never been let down. the
décor, and furnishings make it a truly unique hotel.
you'll have no doubt that you're in asia, and in particular,
Chinatown. the pictures below will tell that story.
depending on the plan you book, a very adequate
breakfast is included...and it's served by efficient and
cordial staff, in a restaurant that becomes a jazz club
at night...complete with a 3 piece combo. while the
staff and facility alone make it a great place to stay...it's
located right in the middle of a very vibrant Chinatown...
dining opportunities, and all sorts of shopping abound,
just outside the door. that does tenfold, if you're lucky
enough to be there during Chinese new year...all of
the excitement is right outside the front door. you just
can't go wrong at shanghai mansion.

about the only drawbacks are the traffic in the area...it
can be a bit difficult to navigate...and the internet signal
can be weak on the upper floors. also, most of the rooms
have only 'simulated' windows...but for me, with the heat
and vibrant activity outside... that only serves to make the
hotel that much more of a sanctuary. sadly, a grocery
store located on the ground floor has closed... but there
are several options, including 7-11's very close at hand.
(beware: Thailand has limited hours for the sale of
"adult beverages")

there's so much going on nearby, you'll have no trouble
finding things to explore...including the famous 'wat trai
mit,' home to the 5.5 ton solid gold Buddha. you can
then satisfy your lust for gold in one of yaowaraj road's
gold shops...they've got stunning jewelry...up to 23k!!!

so...that's it. be it first stay, or next stay in Bangkok...
go for something different, and stay at SHANGHAI
MANSION.

Room Tip: some of the rooms front on the atrium, and have small 'porches' where you can relax with a...
