I loved the place. The mousli is definitely recommended. It's close to the river/water taxi and is exactly what I expected in a Thai hostel with a nice bohemian vibe. This isn't a holiday inn experience and I don't get why a powerpoint would ever even be mentioned in conjunction with a backpacking trip. Oh well.

Happy and his staff make this beautiful guesthouse a great Bangkok experience. The Shanti decor and ambiance is reason enough to stay here, couple it with a relatively quiet and convenient location and you have a winner. The rates are very reasonable, the rooms are clean and unique and it attracts good people, which is for some people the reason to travel. Highly recommend!

Our first stay in Bangkok, it came highly recommended. Had a nice vibe when we first walked in - great decor and restaurant area, lots of lush plants. However, the rooms were expensive, 500 baht got us a very small fan room, with a shared bathroom, which turned out to be an awkward walk down the stairs in a towel past the check-in counter. It was quite noisy. With the wooden floors and thatched walls there was no privacy but it did have a certain Thai charm to it. The room had a fast and free wifi connection and came with a powerpoint. The hot showers were a nice touch but the customer service was a huge let down. The front desk lady was the rudest and snottiest person we've come across in a year of travelling which left us with a bad taste in our mouths, although the rest of the staff were decent. Their restaurant food was overpriced and not that great, however there's many great Thai restaurants and street vendors all around the area. Located about a 40/50 baht tuk-tuk ride from Khao San.

Overall, wouldn't stay there again as you can get better for the price without the attitude at the front desk.

I originally stayed at this lodge in 2005 and returned in 2012 to find that it is still a great place to stay in Bangkok on a relatively tight budget. It's very charming guesthouse with loads of character close to Khao san road. We stayed in both the double room ensuite and traditional rooms. Our ensuite room had decorative stonework all over - very unique and cozy, although no windows which made it a bit difficult to know when it was morning but made it less noisy. The traditional room was more basic and a bit noisy; it was located in the 2nd building (not the main building) and many floors to climb. Recommended to stay in main building. The restaurant downstairs remains one of my favorite places to eat in Bangkok – everything I ate there seemed to be wonderful – and it was very cheap as well!

Room tip: Ask for a room in the main building

my sisters first stayed in shanti lodge mid 90s and loved it. first time i was there in 2005 it was great as well - now summer 2012 it's still a good place but the enthusiasm of the staff has worn off - quiet a bit, which you can feel.
the location is nice and close enough to khao san but far enough to have a peaceful stay. the boat connection to wat arun, wat po and the royal palace is great.

Room tip: get a room in the main building
