“Proximity to Khaosan Road.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 11, 2012

We booked this hotel as we were arriving New Years eve and wanted somewhere local with a party atmosphere. The walk to Khaosan Road , from the hotel, was an easy one and the party spirit was great. When we arrived we asked about train tickets which had been delivered ,for us , to the hotel, the receptionist said they had not arrived. We asked again to look again, the next day, still no. As it was a holiday period the rail office was closed until the day of our travel so we asked the receptionist again, still she said no but another receptionist asked us to wait, went away, and returned with the tickets. Moral of the story ask, ask and ask again. The pool area was very adequate and as a whole our stay was pleasant but it was NOT a "boutique" hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front of the hotel was pleasant and not too noisy.

We stayed here for 2nights in the month of August and found it well located but not comfortable. Firstly we were given a room with a balcony but had a huge wall in front of it so basically no view and air! when asked to change the room they said they can't as we are on special package and we had to pay 1000 Bhatt extra to change! Secondly, the restaurant had a limited choice of food specially for vegetarians. We had to had same b/f for both the days and couldn't stay back for dinner.

We really appreciated the Concierge there, he was very friendly and helpful. He was always greeting us and asking if we need any thing. He even advised on shopping streets and found it to be very helpful. Thanks to him again.

So nice hotel for a night but only if you don't have any other alternative.

Room Tip: Please confirm in advance about the room as you could also land up with a wall right outside your ba...

I first stayed at the Hotel De Moc (then known as Thai Hotel) ten years ago, on my first trip to Bangkok for a meeting at UNESCAP. I found it on the net and booked blind, but it turned out to be a brilliant choice - it is just five minutes walk from the UNESCAP office on Rajdamnern and I saved at least two hours each day - people who stayed in other hotels were completely befuddled by the Bangkok traffic. I did not really expect anything very luxurious, given the price, but I was perfectly satisfied with the simply furnished but very clean room, the friendly and helpful staff, and the free internet. There was even a coffee machine, and the restaurant served a decent breakfast.

The hotel has now changed its name, and the rates have gone up, but everything else seems the same - I don't quite see what makes it "boutique". The rooms are the same - some of the furnishings are perhaps a bit out of date, but everything is spanking clean, the linen is changed every day and the hot water is fairly reliable. many of the old staff are still there, friendly as ever.

The location can be a disadvantage if you are a tourist - this area does not have any smart restaurants and is quite far from the usual tourist attractions.

Warning for vegetarians - the restaurant serves only five vegetarian dishes, which can get seriously boring if you're staying more than five days!

Room Tip: Try and get a room that faces the front, unless you like traffic noise - the side rooms all overlook...

Check in was pretty awful, took a while, didn't get any free drink as promised and then just gave key, not told floor, location etc. Phone kept going and they kept answering it instead of sorting check in so took about 20 minutes. Room was small - hotel is really old and looks like an old hospital, it just looks really dated. It is not a boutique 70's resort as it makes out on the website in any way. Wi-fi is awful, however is free. If really want to stay in Khao San area you can get much better value. Bangkok has a huge oversupply of hotel rooms esp in the Siam / Silom areas book lastminute with one of them and get a good deal, cheaper than staying here.

This was an okay hotel, several blocks (about 15 mins walk) away from Khao San Road.

Pro's:
- Clean rooms
- Decent-sized rooms
- Nice swimming pool
- Reasonably close to Wat Pho, Dusit Park, Khao San Road and Grand Palace
- Reasonable rates
- Free wi-fi (though you had to pay to use the lobby computers if you didn't have your own)

Con's:
- Expressway passes right outside the back of the hotel
- A bit run down
- No public transport (other than local buses which are hard to work out of you don't speak Thai)within easy walking distance
- Hot water takes forever to flow through to rooms on the higher floors

The biggest issue for me was how difficult it was to get places. A taxi to the shopping district (and the airport train) took around 1/2 hour (longer in peak traffic). Many taxis weren't willing to accept a fare to places like Hua Lamphong station. The river is about 20mins walk to catch a ferry. The only sensible way to get to and from the airport is by taxi which is a pain.

Room Tip: The rooms at the back of the hotel look directly out onto a raised expressway. Rooms at the front of...

Good hotel with a good location - just 10 minutes walk to Khao San but far from Khao San's noise and crazyness. And, guys, De Moc has the BEST breakfast in Thailand! It's lavish, it's tasty, it's great. I also loved the collection of retro cars parked at De Moc yard, including a giant Rolls Royce. Wonder who's the lucky owner...
What I didn't like though was bed. All beds are on wheels so you may feel yourself a Formula 1 pilot laying on the bed. Yes man it's moving! I had to puy one of bed covers under wheels to stabilize the bed nearby the wall.
HARDLY recommend everyone travelling to De Moc to print a piece of map with the hotel in Thai language in advance. Bangkok taxi drivers don't speak good English and they don't understand what a farang means by saying "De Moc".

Room Tip: At the reception, ask for a room facing the yard. First time I stayed my room on 2nd floor was facin...

Basic budget hotel one up from being a backpackers. Clean, old fashioned rooms with hostel like beds that fly all around the room on crazy castors. I am a bit passed budget perhaps and probably should have just paid more and gone for one a bit nicer.

That said its fine and clean and everything works. Quite a lot of road noise from busy road out back. Lots of young guests which means some noise late at night.

All to be expected really. Staff were nice.

Pool not suitable for non swimmers as deep with no way to get out apart from the steps. Our children enjoyed though as although they don't swim we have a pool so they are comfortable in the water.

Nice massage centre around pool. I think a good hotel for the cost but if I were a backpacker I'd prob stay at buddys
