During our stay in Bangkok July 2009 ( see our many other reviews here at Tripadvisor ) we had Dinner at the fabled Verandah and we had after that drinks in the Bamboo Bar in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Bangkok. The Bar itself is relatively easy to find just walk through the superb lobby and follow the way to the Verandah Restaurant and Terrace ( here you can sit inside or outside - both ways fantastic! ) and on the side you will see the exotic Bamboo Bar right here in the hotel beside the Cigar Bar! The Atmosphere at the Bamboo Bar was very relaxed and almost too casual and we had also some live jazz on offer at the night but not many visitors however! Which surprised us somewhat, knowing that it was Dinner time - we had ours already, remember! - we were almost alone at this colonial hang-out and we had chosen from the Flavour of the month menu two Pears and Apples named Mocktails ( a large choice of alcoholic drinks and cocktails was also available by the way! ) - only available during July 2009! They were large in size and best enjoyed with the live jazz - which saddly was paused after a few minutes after our entering the bar! The only other guest sat at the counter and spoke with the nice ladies there! However the Bamboo Bar was nice but just a tat underwhelming in terms of people and atmosphere! The bill for the two mocktails by the way came in at 511 Bath incl. Service and Tax. We were there only around 30 min. and moved on after that and marveled at the beautiful Mandarin Oriental Hotel Bangkok by the river of the Kings! We can also recommend a visit to the Oriental Kiosk in the Main Lobby of the hotel for signed books by Harold Stephens ( which we know to be excellent! We have already 3 of his fabled tales and personalities of the east! ) and we recommend a superb dinner with lovely service and romance at the Verandah Restaurant and Terrace as well and a blazing visit to the Bamboo Bar - the subject of this review! The Giftshop at the Oriental was really a must too incl. towels, bookmark and shampoo in large size ( the same as in the rooms, Folks! ). The Bamboo Bar plays a role in Bangkok for over 50 years now and will many many years and decades longer play a role in Bangkok and Thailand and Asia we predict! So do not forget to FLY!STAY!EXPLORE! MORE! and try some very nice Bars like this one on the way around the World!
