“Rewarding but Not for the faint of heart”
Reviewed August 9, 2006

I stayed here several years ago - things could have changed. But I'm moved to write because of the recent negative review here. Classic situation of different people want different things. All of the description in the negative review was accurate - the rooms are large but somehow dingy looking. My bathroom drain stank. I had no view whatsover. The lobby is seedy.

But... the location was wonderful for me. The adjacent streets have lots of small engine repair shops and are full of life into the night. There are nearby ferry landings for getting up to the Palace etc. A major hotel complex is a five minute walk away if you need some tourist services. The Gold Buddha (the one where the plaster covering chipped, revealing the gold underneath) is within walking distance. There is a chinese temple between the hotel and the river with occasional interesting events.

The best is the small restaurant on the top floor. Food is OK but there is a skinny little outside balcony where you can sit in the evening, drink beer and watch the boats go by in the lights on the Chao Praya River.

So if you want a room that's pleasant to hang out in, I don't think this is the place. But if you want good access to the river and to relate more immediately to a Bangkok neighborhood, you might like it.

  • Liked — View of river, non touristy, lively neighborhood, river ferry access
  • Disliked — Rooms were dingy and bathroom sink stank
  • Tips/Secrets — Consider carefully - great for river and neighborhood, cheap, large but dingy room

Nice hotel not far from Orchid Sheraton Hotel. Close to railway station, 10 min walk. Closest pier for the ferries is No4 (Harbor), 5 min.
Beautiful terrace restaurant at the 8th floor, with friendly personal and a superb Chicken with cashew for 80 Bath.

Nice, big rooms with a view over a tempelroof with beatuiful dragons and just 50m to the river.

What a disappointment this guest house was! I had read several positive reviews that must have been written a loooong time ago. I was recently in Bangkok during the annual Loi Krathong festival and wanted a location near the river for easy access to the festival events. I had phoned twice from the states to reserve, and then check on the room and was assured a river view room on an upper floor. Upon arrival, there was no record of my reservation. I provided the dates and contacts from my phone calls and the owner found me a room that just barely had a river view (obstructed by structures and buildings in front of it). The rooms are drab and beyond showing their age. My room was a nice size, but dumpy. I wasn't at all expecting elegance, but the environment here did not give me that "happy to be here" vacation feel. In my room, there was chipped laminate on several furniture pieces, dreary bare walls, and paper-towel thined, frayed, dingey gray towels (usually upon request only - room service seemed inconsistent at best and I wasn't expecting a lot). The phone in the room didn't work and the front desk charged me a few hundred Baht each time I had to use the house phone. I received a wake up "knock" over 45 minutes late one morning and almost missed my morning activity. The atmosphere in the hall on my floor was also a bit seedy. There was a mattress leaning on the wall during the length of my stay and things seemed musty. The location of the River View Guest House was nice. It is very near Chinatown and the river pier area which provides some great strolling opportunities. There are also wonderful vendors (foods, small cafes, flowers, etc.) on the nearby streets that make going to/from the guesthouse enjoyabel. Overall, I would not recommend staying at this guest house.
