It's worth a visit if you love seeing a city from a vantage point. The temple itself is not really impressive in my opinion - so only go if you're keen on the view (which isn't spectacular).

The best view of old city from the top of the golden mountain at Wat Saket, nearby it has the Ban Bat to visit for your tour from Temple.

Wat Saket always appears in the guidebooks as a highly rated "thing to do" but hardly any tourists seem to go there because its a bit out of the way. It's really worth a visit. If you happen to be staying in Sukhumvit, a fun way to get there is on the public transport klong boats on the Saen Saeb canal. It costs about 16 baht from the wharfs at soi 3 (Nana) or soi 21 (Asoke) to Wat Saket, which is the end of the line, noting however that you have to change boats at Tha Pratunam. To get to Wat Saket from the intersection you walk a few hundred metres down Thanon Mahachai, which is devoted to cabinetmaking and lumber shops, which are interesting in themselves. Wat Saket is quite a climb, but it is worth it. You get a great 360 degree view of Bangkok from the top. The Wat is the centre of the Loi Krathong celebrations which take place in November.

It's a fair walk up to the top and tourists should not be short of breath. Plenty of places to rest if you are getting breathless - big gongs on the way up that make a fabulous noise when struck correctly. As this is a place of pilgrimage for many Buddhists it should be treated accordingly although there do not appear to be any dress restrictions. A 1 hour stay is more than enough.

Didn't really know what to expect of the Golden Mount. Turns out to be a lot of steps (100 ish maybe more). Views of Bangkok from the top are very good.
