Owner description: Bangkok’s answer to mass transit started operating in December 1999 and is a convenient and useful way of getting around the city.

Bangkok's Mass Transit System or BTS or Sky Train is a fast, convenient, clean, airconditioned and efficient way of getting around the city. It is certainly a lot better than sitting in traffic jams for hours. It is very simple to use the BTS. All the train stations have signs written in English and the people in the ticket offices speak English and are very helpful and friendly. Tickets are very inexpensive and simple to purchase. We went from the central station to the Chatuchak weekend markets in a fraction of the time a taxi would take. I highly recommend using the BTS anytime you are in Bangkok. As for the Chatuchak weekend markets - do not miss this. Amazing, inexpensive shopping. Only trouble is it is very hot so make sure you have plenty of water to drink and a hat.

On my first visit to Bangkok, about 20 years ago, there was no Skytrain. To go from Sukhumvit to the weekend market ("chatuchak"), I took a taxi which took an hour and a half of sitting in traffic jams and cost me proportionally. Today when I want to go to the weekend market from Sukhumvit, I get on the SkyTrain (or the MTR) and in 20 minutes I am there. No fuss, no muss, no bother.

The SkyTrain (BTS) is definitely an efficient mode of transportation. For those of us who do not like the traffic jams that characterize Bangkok, you can ride over them by using the Skytrain.

Like any other train, the passenger is limited to go where the tracks take him, and so as opposed to a taxi, the chances that you are going to go from door to door are relatively slim, and clearly there are destinations which are not reached by the Skytrain. However, if you can come close to your destination, it is worth the ride, as it is airconditioned and avoids the jams.

The down side is that in many places you have to climb steep staircases to reach the platform. Installation of more escalators would make this mode of transportation much more attractive. Additionally, the ticket machines do not accept bills, meaning that if you do not have enough coins in your pocket, you may have to stand on two lines: the first to change bills to coins and the second to purchase the ticket. There are situations where the cashier will also sell individual tickets, but this is more the exception than the rule.

It's a quick way to get around Bangkok, cheap too. You can get to almost all the major attractions via the skytrain. Plenty of instructions around the stations for the first-timers. There are trains coming every 5-10 minutes. The only downside is at times it can get quite crowded.

But a day ticket for 130 Baht and travel around Bangkok in air conditioned luxury. Frequent trains on the 2 routes but can be very crowded at peak times. Stops are well places for many attractions,
We were also lucky to have a hotel within 5 minuets walk of a station.

Choose a hotel close to the BTS to get around the city. Well sign posted it is easy to use but I will not miss the steep stairs you need to climb!!
At the ticket counter you can change notes for coins. Each stop is numbered e.g. 24 so that is the number you punch into the machine. It is very cheap and if you are travelling multiple times there is a one day ticket for 130 THB.
It can be crowded at times but that can change between stations as people arrive and depart. Good air conditioning too to escape the heat. Only way to travel.
