We travel by Public Taxi boat,on hot summer day 103 F. We enjoyed travel from the pier near Oreintal Hotel to the end of the boat line. Side seeing the boat houses, barges, temples, bridges, the temple of dawn, grand palace, whole sale market flower market and many more. It was my grand daughter first trip in Thailand. We love Orchids. Have wonderful time. It is cool in the boat. Plan the trip for lunch time, not so busy. Put on good shoes. Be careful for time of loading, sometime people rushing without cautions. Enjoys cheap ride by water.

Transport by boat over the the chao Phraya river is an excellent way to reach interesting locations in Bangkok where the BTS skytrain or metro can't reach. Apart from being a means of transport, it provides you nice views of the city. The main pier to start a boat trip is the Sathorn pier which is adjacent to the Saphan Taksin BTS station. River transport is cheap. A single trip from Sathorn pier to the Grand Palace (Tha Chang pier) costs 60 THB (1.75 Eur). If you want to go to ICONSiam shopping mall or Asiatique The Riverfront along the Chao Praya River, just take the free shuttle boats at the Sathorn pier.

As per other reviews this is a good way of getting around Bangkok. The hardest bit is finding the best boat option at the piers as you get bombarded by different operators. The main culprits are those selling Hop-on-Hop-off all day rides for 200 baht per day yet the public ones cost 20 baht per journey. We rarely did more than 2 rides per day so it’s cost effective to go public. When you get to a pier just walk past everyone until you’re virtually in the queue and someone will help you out. Do it once and you get the hang of it

Use the ferry service to get to destinations quickly. The ferry service is cheap and quite easy to use. Maps are available to figure which stop gets you to your destination. We happened to mistakenly take an Express Boat that only stopped at the Grand Palace (100 baht) from the Sathorn stop, had we walked 50 more feet, the orange or blue ferry would stop more often and for 60 baht.

A wide winding river, lined by old and new buildings. Some spectacular riverside hotels (Peninsula). Different types of boats to use. Free ride from Central pier to 2 new mega malls (Icon Siam and Asiatique) - a must do
