Hidden away in the streets of Bangkok is this lovely House.
The silk makers story is a fasinating one. Dont miss the shop selling the silk, its the best you will see in Thailand.

Worth a visit. The entry fee covers the compulsory tour, which takes about 30mins in a small group. There is lots of valuable stuff lying around the house exactly as he left it, so I understand why they don't let people in there unsupervised. Some interesting stories from the guide about Thai architecture.

The story of Jim Thomson have always captivated me. Hence, I took the opportunity to visit the Jim Thomson House during one of my recent business trip.

The lush garden surrounding the house is both inviting and therapeutic. The guide took us into the various rooms of the house and gave a brief and interesting explanation of its past. Looking at the paintings and artifacts, one might feel like we have gone back in time to a bygone era. We are so impressed with architecture of main house which remain sturdy till today.

We sat in the garden to savor the mysterious aura of the house after the guided tour .. still intrigued by the disappearance the of man who brought Thai silk to the world.

Worth a visit if you are tired of the usual shopping and night life.

Our driver dropped us at the entrance of Jim Thompson House at around 4.30pm. As the parking area was under construction, our vehicle had to park at a nearby hotel (JT’s security gave our driver a parking coupon). We bought entry tickets and roamed around the small garden & yard. There were areas which were out-of-bound unless we were accompanied by a JT-guide.

We requested for a Mandarin speaking JT-guide, the tour started at 5pm. The guide spoke in Mandarin with heavy Thai accent. But we could understand her well. She was polite. A group of about 8 or 9 tourists (mainly from China) gathered together & moved around from place to place, in an orderly manner. Photo-taking wasn’t allowed in the premises (mainly in the inner rooms where Jim Thompson stayed in). In certain rooms, we had to remove our shoes. Some rooms were air-conditioned, some had only fans. However, it wasn’t hot that day after a drizzle.

We understood the restrictions so as to maintain the place well. We enjoyed listening to the history of Jim Thompson as the founder, admiring his keen interest in keeping the artifacts as well as all the historical ornaments & architecture. The structure of the house was amazingly, he really had good taste in everything! He was very artistic!

After a good 40-minutes of tour, we collected our shoes & belongings from the lockers area. We went to the souvenir stores and bought some silk items. They were of high quality.

We reserved a table for dinner at about 8pm at Jim Thompson Restaurant (just next to the house). Since we still had some time left, we took a ride to the nearby malls (Siam Discovery / Siam Centre) for some window-shoppings.

We had a lovely dinner there! (See review covering solely on Jim Thompson Restaurant).
