“Worst Hotel in Bangkok”
Reviewed November 8, 2013

We stayed here in early October with 2 Adults and 2 Children. This was our last hotel after travelling through Vietnam and Thailand for 4 weeks and let me tell you it was very disappointing.

On arriving at the hotel it looks very impressive but that's where it ends.

We booked this Hotel thinking it was a new hotel but it is definitely not new.....maybe it has been taken over by The Berkeley and renovated but don't be fooled that it is a new hotel.

We had booked a family room which was on the north tower. Room was very large, no character lack of furnishings. Room was very dirty. A/C did not work properly. On our second night we were transferred to a corner suite room as A/C was still not working. This was nice & the best room that they have which is scary because it was still not of a 5 star standard once again this room was not very clean.

Now lets move on to the buffet breakfast. This is worst breakfast which we have ever experienced nothing is cooked fresh & I mean nothing. You will notice a lot of people in the kitchen but they are not cooking they are just busy bringing prepared food out which is cold and disgusting. The kitchen is full of trays with precooked fried eggs, scrammed eggs, omelettes, waffles etc. Not sure when they have been cooked but I would say it would be safer eating street food. On our second morning we thought we would order poached eggs they were not impressed about it & told us we had to wait 10 mins. When they arrived they were cold straight from the fridge pretty sad when you cant even get a fresh hot cooked egg. We did not eat them and sent them back & let me tell you they were very angry. On our third morning we decided to go to McDonald's and sad to say but it was so much better and we were able to enjoy a hot breakfast. Very sad when McDonald's is better than a 5 star hotel.

Also the Hotel have a scam going with the local taxis. We ordered a taxi to go to Safari World we asked for the meter on & the taxi guy was not impressed and was trying to sell us the entry ticket in the end he asked us to get out down the street as we already had tickets. Finally we were happy to leave this hotel but to get a taxi to the airport you can only get a fixed price which is very inflated when I questioned the hotel they said you can no longer get a meter taxi to the airport which is crap.

Now onto the positives the pool is very nice for a hotel in the city and our kids did enjoyed it immensely. We also thought the location was pretty good not a long walk to MBK or Central World.

This is our third year in a row to Thailand & we have never come across a Hotel like this in this price bracket. You can definitely do better there are so many nice Hotels in Bangkok.

Room Tip: Stay at another Hotel if you want to enjoy your holiday

We are currently still in this hotel... coming to the end of a 12-night stay, at the start of a 3-month trip of SE Asia.
The hotel was easy for the taxi-driver to find... we had printed off instructions for the taxi-driver.
Check-in was smooth and easy... staff spoke great English.
The room, in the north tower, near the top, was spacious, clean, and modern. The bathroom is spacious, with a great 2-way shower. Supplies are replenished daily.
Wifi is always good... an excellent signal, even at the top of the north tower.
I saw previous reviews stating the room was 'too far away' and a 'long walk from reception'. The walk between the first and second towers took us less than a minute....and we're both in our 60's.
The walkway is on floor 11... the same floor as the pool, business office, travel agent and gym.... so not really an issue
.The pool is decent size for Central Bangkok with enough sunbeds, (could maybe do with a few more umbrellas) and a large supply of clean fresh towels. Pool maintenance could be be better, water is slightly cloudy. They are also currently building a second pool.
The gym is new, modern and clean, with good equipment....easy to do my regular 90-minute workouts.

Breakfast is a buffet....a good and frequently-replenished variety of Western and Asian fare.... fresh fruit , coffee, cereals, eggs, ham, everything you need to start the day.
Mr. Suhut, the restaurant manager and his staff are always attentive and very pleasant, and all speak great English.

The location is very central.... great for shopping. The walk to the skytrain is about 15 minutes.

The Berkeley Hotel is a very new hotel, they have minor teething problems, as does every new venture. The good thing about the Berkeley is that they are trying very hard to address these issues.

I would have no problem recommending this hotel to friends, and would definitely stay here again. A very pleasant stay so far.... and excellent value for money.

Hotel is not very near to pratunam, need to cross bridge and cross the road. Checked in to hotel, room card faulty, water heater is useless, either too hot if not too cold. Room air con worst, took 4 hrs to warm up and still very warm. Hotel service is the worst part, overcharged me and still argued with me, till I need to call my local bank to check. Male Service manager attitude is poor, show attitude to me and even tried to cover his staff. Unable to resolve the issue and tried to push issue to the morning shift finance control manager and the manager is OFF next day. Until a supervisor took over the case and at least know how to call the bank to cancel the transaction. Service and quality of the hotel basically is worst than a 3 star hotel. I would definitely not introduce my friends to this hotel. I hope someone from the hotel higher management will contact me with regards to this.

Hotel is walking distance from platinum fashion mall and platunam market, and linked to palladium mall. Street vendors come out at night as well. Very convenient. Massage place down the road (past palladium mall) is good as well.
Hotel staff are reasonably helpful.

Overall, the location of the hotel is good and near to Platinum Mall and Central World Mall. There are several night bazaars and street food hawkers that congregate outside the hotel at night, so it's quite interesting too.

The room was comfortable, and I had a good sleep there for all nights. The only drawback was that the toilet floor tiles were poorly designed, and the water could not flow properly into the drain. This caused the shower floor to be always "flooded". The reception staff were also average and looked new and did not portray a professional image.

There was good wifi coverage in the room and other parts of the hotel. Breakfast was alright just that the spread was similar everyday. The shopping centre connected to it (Palladium) was very pathetic and there is nothing to eat there. The nearest food court is likely at Platinum Mall. However, you can also cross the street for meals as there are some food stalls selling chicken rice, seafood, cooked food.

The rooms are very clean and new, and the pool is spacious and nice. Location is premium.

However, the hotel is very big and has 2 towers. If you stay in the north tower, then you will have to walk a lot and take 2 elevators to get to your room. It just seemed that you are a "number" in this hotel, you need vouchers (that receiption will provide upon check-in) to exchange for breakfast at the restaurant - which you DON'T want to loose - Staff are running around doing their best, but don't expect that extra touch of service. They will call a taxi for you, but you will deal with the driver, etc...

It's a nice place, if you want something NEW and clean in the middle of town for a couple of nights, then it's a good call.

Room Tip: Go for the main tower!

Been a bit skeptical during booking. Glad that I did, this hotel turned out to be revelation!
First, tower issue made easy: Luxury range of rooms belong to Main Tower; Premier range belongs to North Tower. Present promo price difference between corresponding premier and luxury is in the tune of single digit bucks!
Location is great for family shopping vacations - right in the city centre - in close proximity of shopping and entertainment. Palladium is next door (adjoining from the hotel lobby), Platinum diagonally across, Central World within 250m, Siam Paragon; Siam Centre; Siam Discovery and MBK in succession after Central World. 6-11 pm flea market on the walkway adjacent to this property. As far as clean entertainment is concerned, Central World has an Ice Rink, Siam Paragon houses top-class movie theaters (3d, 4d and i-Max) and an underground aquarium, Siam discovery has Madame Tussaud's Bangkok. A negative about location is distance from public transports - over 1km to the nearest BTS (Chit Lom), closest metro is even further, about half a km to Ratchaparok Airport Link.
Well maintained spacious rooms, Luxury corner rooms have big window for nice city view. We stayed at floor 30 with a mindblowing city view! Adequately furnished, universal power outlets in work-table, bath-tub, shower enclosure with rain shower, air-conditioner temperature adjustable, pillow-bed-linen clean and comfy. Had a few lesser issues though -shower mixer was difficult to adjust; either too cold or too hot, the rain shower force was not good enough to my liking and the shower enclosure floor was not properly sloped for easy drainage of used water. Might be an issue to my particular room - not sure! Room does not have any hotel directory, service manual, telephone directory, room service menu etc. which is quite unusual after months of inauguration! Can get some printouts if one asks the reception - which is pretty useful.
The common areas of the hotel are vast, nicely set, well decorated and properly maintained. Specially the swimming pool area and the dining area are grand. The lobby is not bad either though looks a bit crowded at times. This is understandable since this hotel accommodates over 700 guests.
The buffet spread is just adequate. The kitchen counter serving freshly made eggs, hams, bacons and waffle-mapple syrup has a nice touch. Bread choices are pretty good. Milk and cereals are included in the spread. Serves fresh fruit juices (choice of orange and pineapple only).
The service or rather the intention to serve is the highlight of this hotel. You ask for anything, it comes almost instant if you can overcome the communication barrier! During our five night stay we have asked for extra hangers, iron-press and stands, etc. Check-in, chek-out quick and with smile, bell boy, concierge desk courteous. 11th floor (pool, hall and tower transfer floor) has an effective tour operator and a pool bar.
This hotel seems to come some way since its inception, and it seems heading towards the right direction so far. If one can get over the debate of its star rating, one can enjoy it as a decent city hotel in a prime Bangkok location.
Eatery tips: Some street food stalls are there across the hotel on Petchaburi road for one to explore. In the Palladium mall basement # 2, there is a food court selling yummy food at reasonable price for occassional meals. From the hotel lobby just take the mall entrance and should not have any difficulty in finding it. Tell what, they sell tastier Chicken-rice (Khao Man Kai) than their more known counterpart across the road!

Room Tip: Luxury Corner Suite is the best they have to offer - opt for a high floor - get a mindblowing city v...
