I have been eating at Kalong Home Cooking for almost twenty years. The same people have been working there since my first meal there. It's not the easiest place to find and getting there is an adventure. Driving Si Ayutthaya Road at night includes views of brightly-lit temples, Chitralada Palace (residence of the King and Queen), and Government House. Take Si Ayutthaya Road as it curves around the National Library and continue until the street ends at the river. (Get your hotel to write these directions in Thai for your taxi driver.) You will find Kalong Home Cooking on a rickety pier with lovely river views.
The clientele is 99.5% Thai, so you know the food is authentic, delicious and a good value. Their seafood is fresh and always great. Prawns grilled in their shells are one of my favorites, and so are the crabs. Their chicken with cashew nuts is the best I have found anywhere. But the star of the menu (for me, at least) is the banana flower salad, slightly warm with minced pork, small shrimp and a tangy dressing. Most dishes are available with little or no "heat" if you are a wimp,
The atmosphere is delightfully funky. All seating is outdoors but there is a large covered area where you can escape the rain. There is no bar, but several beers, soft drinks and Thai whiskey are available. Some staff speak English, but all are friendly and eager to help. The menu is bilingual and has photos, so you can point at what you want. When you are ready to go they will send for a taxi.
Enjoy your lunch or dinner at Kalong Home Cooking, but don't tell a should about this little treasure. We don't want the place to be spoiled.
