One of the biggest challenges in Bangkok is transportation. The city streets are generally clogged with traffic so much so that it is not uncommon to see motorcycles winding their way through pedestrians on the sidewalks. Therefore having a property near any sort of mass transportation station is a big selling point. The W is located one building across from the Chong Nonsi BTS station on the Silom line. The BTS is Bangkok's elevated transit rail.
As others have noted, this is a very modern hotel, which may not appeal to those looking for a traditional or classic hotel experience. The moment you walk in, you feel like you are in a very trendy night club. In fact, the bar to the left of the lobby does have a dj playing mid-week. The room is also quite modern. The room lighting, AC, and Do-not-disturb sign are all controlled via a tablet, and the decor is suited more for couples than anything else. I do not think, based on our room, that this place is the best hotel for kids. The staff is very courteous and go out of their way to be helpful. I, for example, needed to get to an obscure location via taxi. The bell staff made sure the taxi driver knew where I needed to get to, and even quickly ran to print out a map of my destination.
While at the hotel, I went to the spa to get a massage. Normally I would go to a very well known, and trusted spa just a few blocks away, but the hotel had a special promotion going. Most spas that I have been to have very new-age-y nature-y music while a treatment is performed in soft earth-toned rooms that may remind one of being in a bamboo forest. The W takes a different approach, and I found it interesting and equally as relaxing. The room is aglow with a selected color (I chose purple, I think other colors were blue, green, or pink). The music being played was soft and relaxing tecno (sorry, don't know the best way of describing it) music. I must say that the deep tissue massage I had at the W is one of the best I have had in Thailand. It is quite a different experience, but quite enjoyable.
The W will be a place I will definitely consider the next time we find ourselves in Bangkok.
