Great modern hotel in the heart of Bangkok

Review of W Bangkok
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jul 21, 2013
One of the biggest challenges in Bangkok is transportation. The city streets are generally clogged with traffic so much so that it is not uncommon to see motorcycles winding their way through pedestrians on the sidewalks. Therefore having a property near any sort of mass transportation station is a big selling point. The W is located one building across from the Chong Nonsi BTS station on the Silom line. The BTS is Bangkok's elevated transit rail.

As others have noted, this is a very modern hotel, which may not appeal to those looking for a traditional or classic hotel experience. The moment you walk in, you feel like you are in a very trendy night club. In fact, the bar to the left of the lobby does have a dj playing mid-week. The room is also quite modern. The room lighting, AC, and Do-not-disturb sign are all controlled via a tablet, and the decor is suited more for couples than anything else. I do not think, based on our room, that this place is the best hotel for kids. The staff is very courteous and go out of their way to be helpful. I, for example, needed to get to an obscure location via taxi. The bell staff made sure the taxi driver knew where I needed to get to, and even quickly ran to print out a map of my destination.

While at the hotel, I went to the spa to get a massage. Normally I would go to a very well known, and trusted spa just a few blocks away, but the hotel had a special promotion going. Most spas that I have been to have very new-age-y nature-y music while a treatment is performed in soft earth-toned rooms that may remind one of being in a bamboo forest. The W takes a different approach, and I found it interesting and equally as relaxing. The room is aglow with a selected color (I chose purple, I think other colors were blue, green, or pink). The music being played was soft and relaxing tecno (sorry, don't know the best way of describing it) music. I must say that the deep tissue massage I had at the W is one of the best I have had in Thailand. It is quite a different experience, but quite enjoyable.

The W will be a place I will definitely consider the next time we find ourselves in Bangkok.

With funky interior and fortress-style exterior, W Bangkok draws attraction from younger guests (mainly Asian). It's such a weird design concept that combined purple crocodile element with Thai boxing. Maybe I'm too old for such a thing. I've been staying at the few Ws so far, this is the newest and the worst.

During my stay, I experienced the electricity black-out and poor quality food at the Kitchen. Bad breakfast selection, they have set menu for lunch which is horrifying (I still regret that I spent $15-$20 there for lunch there). They claimed it is fusion Thai food, I think it is just an absolute mess and unforgiven mistake from the kitchen. Food is very slow, you just sat there waiting for them to serve you, not so many people dine there when I was there and many staff ganged up in their open kitchen. Not sure what they were doing.

However, the Woobar is quite nice. You can feel the difference. The staff are nice and friendly, drinks are great. Food is bad since it came from the Kitchen upstairs. I guess the bar lives up to what you (at least myself) expected to see from W brand.

Although it's brand new and quite convenient (not too far from BTS Chongnonsi, there is a shortcut that you can go through to get to the Sky Train via the office building next to the hotel (Sathorn Square). The area lacks of character, just surrounded with high-rise office building. No shopping malls or they don't even have convenient stores nearby. You have to take the Sky Train for one stop to get to the shopping mall, Silom Complex (BTS Saladaeng) or two more stops to the shopping malls strip at BTS Siam station. However, this is the same train line that goes down to the river, two stops away from BTS Taksin where there are piers that you can on board either water taxis or hotel shuttle boats to hotels located on the Chao Phraya river.

I DEFINITELY WILL NOT RETURN, may come for drinks at Woobar or maybe not since there are many great places in the city e.g. Vertigo moon bar at the Banyan Tree hotel.

BTW Nice (weird) pool but relatively small.

Hi euro2006,

It saddens me to see that you feel our design concept is weird as we get a large positive response on the design because of the amount of local Thai culture we utilize. This is praised by both younger and older guests as we have a large age span running from 29 to 67 years old.

I am surprised that you mention your bad experience overall with the Kitchen Table, I apologize if you were informed it is Thai Fusion but it is definitely not fusion. The cuisine is both Thai and International. We do have an extensive menu or the set lunch menu which changes weekly. I will investigate with the Chef and team to see why the service did not meet your expectations and to see what you mean by the Talent ganging up in the kitchen.

The location of the hotel is located in the heart of the Central business district and is next to the BTS (sky train) which does make it easy to get around the city. There is development for Chong Nonsi where we will be having KuDeTA, Apple, etc opening very soon in close proximity to the hotel

I am happy to see you like WOOBAR as it is important for us and W Hotels because of our cocktail culture.

I hope that you will return in the future but I would also like to find out more details regarding your experience as the Executive Chef and I do take your review seriously. The chef and I can be reached on prwbangkok@whotels.com,

All the best,

Nick Heath

My first W experience and was a wonderful one! I stayed other Starwood hotels before but this convinced me to enroll as a SPG member and will consider to look for Starwood hotels first for my future holiday. The bed was so comfy, food was yummy and service was the main reason set them apart from other hotels in Bangkok! I will definitely be back! Thanks again for the memorable stay, it will not be possible without you all...Pook, Mike, KJ and too many to name!

The hotel is very new and the standard is very high. Thanks very much to the staff for helping us out with informations about excursions and activities to do.I totally recommend it to go there!

Trendy hotel in the heart of Bangkok's business district. Location is ideal as it is near the BTS train. If you're looking for a less formal 5* hotel then this is the place.

Hotel rooms are lovely, i had a room on the 24th floor with a breathtaking view over Bangkok. The bed was amazing, so comfortable it was hard to get up!

Pool area isn't too big, although it was very quiet at the hotel when i was there but i can imagine that it would be very cramped if the hotel were full. Gym is modern and has the latest Technogym equipment.

Food & Drinks were also very good as were the other factilities at the hotel such as free internet in al the public places EXCEPT for in your room where you have to pay.....and i really don't get this. If you're trying so hard to be a trendy, modern, laid-back, hip hotel and then you go and charge for internet in the room!!! It completely goes against the whole image you're trying to portray, how very 'not hip'. I stayed at 5 hotels whilst visiting Thailand, none charged me for internet except this hotel. Come on W Hotel get with the times......

Room tip: Ask for the highest floor available, then you'll have wonderful views over Bangkok

W Bangkok is a fantastic spot to stay for your city break or work trip, I can highly recommend it having just stayed there last weekend.

This hotel is super modern and has a great atmosphere that feels more like a cool restaurant as you arrive rather than a standard city hotel. The staff from the taxi arrival, to the reception desk, to the restaurant were all friendly, fun and helpful.

The room is modern, and very comfortable and light. The gym is excellent, and the pool area is great too.

The BTS sky train stop just behind the hotel is a great asset.

The breakfast was excellent.

I would certainly stay here again if I was after an efficient, modern, city hotel with a good atmosphere and great gym in a central location.

Room tip: We had a corner room, which was great for light.
