“Ayutthaya Day Trip”
Review of River Sun Cruise

River Sun Cruise

This is a great way to visit the old city of Ayutthaya. Our day started at 7am with a hotel pickup. Ayutthaya is an hour by bus (setting off early avoids Bangkok city traffic). We made stops at 4 temples including the Bang Pa In Palace and the Reclining Buddha. The tour is well organised. The cruise on the way back is charming.

This is one of the best tours with excellent tour guide speakers who explain a lot of the history and facts about the country. The cruise is at the end of the Ayutthaya tour, which last most of the morning. The cruise includes a buffet lunch with great food. There is also a cash bar. It is a very nice way to sightsee and take a lot of pictures!

Mr. Pon the tour guide is helpful. Everything went smooth. It's better to go on Sat or Sun without the traffic jam. Buffet lunch is good. Pick up on time. Nothing to complain about. I book thru hotels2thailand, quite reliable.

We struggled to find the shuttle bus because we didn't organise pick up from our hotel. The tour guide, Mr. Pon, was very entertaining and had a great body of knowledge of not just Ayutthaya but Thailand as a whole. We were taken to many different locations in the ancient city and were given ample time to explore and take photos. The cruise back to River City was good but after about 1.5 hours it was quite enough. Would definitely recommend going to see Ayutthaya with River Sun Cruises.

We really enjoyed our tour with River Sun Cruises. In fact, we liked it so much that when we came back with our 23 year old son a year later, we used the same company again, and enjoyed it just as much, if not more!

Like many of the Ayutthaya tours, we met at 7:30 AM behind the River City shopping center and got in large air-conditioned buses. The bus didn't actually leave until about 8:00 as they were waiting for all of the people to arrive - many were being brought from their hotels by van shuttles.

It's about a 1 1/2 hour drive to the Bang Pa palace - the summer retreat for the Thai royal family. There are some great gardens and interesting architecture there. We spent about an hour there.

Then we drove to the Ayutthaya ruins. There are a few different stops to see the ruins, including one to see the giant reclining Buddha. One is a stop where there is a Buddha head that has been overtaken by tree roots - makes an interesting picture. The ruins are reminiscent of those at Angkor Wat in Cambodia.

We had different tour guides both times but enjoyed them both. We had a woman the second time who was especially good. Sorry I can't remember her name but she is from the Ayutthaya area and has been a guide for many years.

There are plenty of people trying to sell you things at each stop along the way, usually for quite inflated prices. Our tour guide told us what prices should be and helped some people shop a bit. We negotiated on our own but were glad to have the price guidance.

After stopping to see the ruins, we stopped at a pagoda complex for a few minutes as well. Then we went to the boat. I enjoyed the drive around the Ayutthaya area as well because there were interesting sights - the houses, the chicken statues for sale, the decorative light poles with elephants and birds on them, the shrines outside of homes and businesses, etc.

On the river cruise back to Bangkok the food was good Thai fare. Drinks are purchased separately. We could sit where we liked, but some folks were asked to move so that bigger groups could all sit together. More than one busload of people were on the boat - I think there were 3 busloads on the boat. You could walk out on the deck and sit there as well as at your table. And, after the meal, I moved around and sat at different tables when I wasn't outside. The view along the river was great!

No breakfast/snacks are served, so if you take this tour, do be sure and bring your own if you haven't already eaten breakfast before the tour. At various stops along the way you can buy drinks and snacks, though.

We thoroughly enjoyed the tour and do recommend it to our friends.
