Owner description: Bangkok's famous palace complex was built in 1782 and features several magnificent buildings including Wat Phra Kaeo (Temple of the Emerald Buddha), which contains a beautiful Emerald Buddha that dates back to the 14th century.

The Grand Palace is much more than just the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. Take a little time to read up on what is actually inside the walls so you can enjoy without spending time just wandering around. It is also worthwhile to hire an English speaking guide to get the most out of the experience. One thing to be aware of is that there are many scam artists outside the grounds who will try to tell you that it is closed for the day or for a few hours and will attempt to lure you to their "short tour." Avoid these at all costs, as they are lying in order to get your money. There are signs warning of them, but these are not everywhere. Be sure to bring your camera, as everything inside is picture-worthy. Enjoy.

Established 1782 the renowned temple covers 218,000 square meters surrounded by four walls. . It was built after King Rama ascended to the throne not only to serve as his residence but also as the site of administration offices. One of the most amazing sites in the compound is the Royal Monastery of the Emerald Buddha. The sacred image is clad with one of three costumes,(summer, rainy season, and winter). The emerald Buddha is in fact carved from a block of green jade and was first discovered in 1434 . It had been covered with plaster and thought to be an ordinary Buddha . The abbot who found the image noticed the plaster had flaked off the nose. He thought it ti be emerald underneath thus giving it the name. This entire compound is amazing with its statues, inlaid pearl, gold and stones covering every building, mostly totally restored. There are beautiful murals statues of the famous white elephants, supurb gardens . In all there are 35 buildings to please the eye and a picture at every turn for the photographer. There are coin collections, weapons,so much to see you could easily spend an entire day there. We were given free water as it was very hot when we visited.
