We spent our first 2 nights in Bangkok here and loved it so much we booked for the last 2 nights of our Holiday too!
Everything about this immaculately clean Boutique Hotel was just perfect! The Decor, The Rooms, The Location and Outlook, The Pool Area, The Breakfast and The Staff! Can't fault one thing!
Hope we get the chance to return one day.

We stayed 9 nights in Riva Surya in July 2013 in a Premium Riva Room. We were a little disappointed with the room at first glance, as it looks nothing like the photos on the hotel website, as it’s minus the flowers, red cushions, candles and extra lamps that have been brought in to enhance the appearance. However, you can jump on the ferry and head down to Memorial Bridge and the nearby flower market and you can stock up on your pick of flowers for next to nothing, and the hotel can provide you with a vase.

However, once you accept that, the room itself is a very pleasant area.
It’s not 5 star, but you can’t beat the location for the old city. (Don’t stay here if your idea of a Bangkok holiday is hitting the Malls, you are much better off over in Siam Square for that).

Sitting outside on the balcony watching all the activity on the river is a wonderful way to pass some time, especially at night when many of the passing boats are wonderfully lit. The hotel’s location on the river (they were actually using the Riva Surya pier as a ferry stop at the moment while the Pra Arthit Pier was being renovated) is a major plus. The whistles of the rope men on the ferries pulling into the pier were probably not welcomed by those who didn’t want to be enjoying Thailand at 6.30am, but that will be over in a week or two.

As well as the excellent people watching opportunities afforded in the nearby laneways (as well as Khao San Road) there are several good eating options in the vicinity. Hemlock restaurant directly across the road was a particular standout, while Dickinson’s and Ricky’s cafes opposite were good breakfast/lunch options. We didn’t eat at the hotel so couldn’t comment on that aspect.

The ‘two for one’ cocktail Happy Hour is good value, and it’s great sitting next to the river as darkness falls, but be prepared to up stumps quickly if it starts to rain.

Some considerations to bear in mind:

• The walls are thin, and you will certainly hear your neighbours if they enjoy late night conversations, or enjoy moving the furniture in the early hours (gee I hope we didn’t disturb you guys by making too much noise early the next morning!)
• the aircon even at the lowest fan setting is still loud - just another reason to pack the earplugs.

We should mention that although the level o English proficiency at the front desk is uneven the staff were all incredibly helpful, particularly when I had mobile phone problems. We thought however that management could have taken a firmer line with the farang youths who were cavorting in the pool with glass beer bottles at 7am (fortunately they didn’t break one, which would have necessitated draining the pool).

Management might also like to pay more attention to both the volume and style of musical accompaniment that they put on, especially at breakfast time. Maybe it’s just me, but sitting out on the balcony with an early morning cuppa to the accompaniment of some loud doof doof or gangster rap isn’t the way I like to start my day.

Two other suggestions for the hotel would be to replace the felt tips on the legs of the tables and chairs, which mostly seem to have worn through, and which make the rooms much nosier than they need be. They could also invest in a small esky for the limo pickup to ensure that the water presented to you when you get into the vehicle wasn’t more suited to making tea than drinking.

Overall we enjoyed our stay. We’d certainly stay here again, probably next time in a Deluxe Riva room, which although smaller looked a little more stylish.

Room Tip: Go the Riva rooms. Deluxe would be fine unless you need the extra room of the Premium.

I didn't know what to expect from the Riva Surya, since friends I was traveling with had made the reservation, so I was unprepared for just what an amazing place it was. The aesthetics of the lobby area and the pool, along with the rooms themselves, were delightful - the lighting, color choices, patterns - all the furnishings are luxurious without being ostentatious. Everything fits well together, and works well. The pool is extremely pleasant, as is the shower off to the side of it. The rooms feel like they were taken from a much pricier hotel - the bathroom and shower area were immaculate, the bed firm and the sheets very comfortable. The breakfast options were extensive and well-prepared. But what really sets this hotel apart - more than the river views and the quality of the furnishings - is the staff. The people working here were without exception friendly, helpful, welcoming, cheerful - just a delight to interact with and be around. My only regret was staying such a short time - 3 days was not enough. I look forward to coming back.

Room Tip: Nice views from the 5th floor.

With it riverside swimming pool and bar and its location so close to some major tourist sites the hotel was already onto a winner. The staff were all very helpful and the room was absolutely excellent (overlooking the river), the bed being one of the most comfortable I've found. I was actually disappointed that I was only staying for one night between flights.

What a wonderful stay we had. The staff couldn't do enough to help us,the rooms were really big and comfortable and the beds were just so comfortable - we didn't want to leave.

We had cocktails by the river watching the world sail by - the food was great and good value too, with a range of both bistro style and thai inspired favorites. Delicious and great value too.

I can't recommend this place enough, intimate, friendly and just a great laid back vibe. Definitely - a hidden Gem in Bangkok.

Room Tip: Choose the river view...but all rooms seemed nice.

The good news is the location near major tourist sites. The bad news is that the location is far from the Skytrain, and has to be reached by cab, which during the rush hours in challenging. However the hotel is on the river and next to where the express boats stop. The hotel is new and the rooms are in good condition. The bad news is noise - if you are not on the top two floors (there are five) facing the river, you can forget about sleeping until 1am. The street side faces noisy bars with loud music. The river side faces the small pool where they have weddings and parties - and erect loud speakers on the balconies. The worst thing is the staff. They smile a lot but are totally untrained. So if you make an arrangement (like a tour, or a late check out) it is as good as that person stays working. Once there is a new person, everything is forgotten and you have to start again. You need to check and check again. The breakfast is adequate but again there is a staff issue - they are challenged even to make a fried egg. Generally, on both quality and cost grounds, the other meals are best taken elsewhere.
