I stayed in this hotel in 2005 as part of an Intrepid tour and although it was a basic hotel I found the location, rooms and staff great and the rooms quiet.
It has changed since then! My partner and I booked this hotel for two nights at the start of our trip and three at the end (which is too long a stay in Bangkok!!). The hotel is in a perfect location very central to the main sights in Bangkok, markets and only one block from Khao San Rd. A lot of bars and restuarants have expanded from Khao San Rd and are located in the tiny street the hotel is located in - Making the once quiet hotel now quite noisy especially if you have a street facing room. Bars in Bangkok are open until 1am and most have live music playing. On our second night we transfered to the other side of the hotel where our view was a multi-storey carpark - But at least it was quiet!
The rooms are spacious, adequate and clean. The reception service is great. The buffet breakfast is not so crash hot but edible. The tourist desk located near reception is really helpful.
Personally I would not stay here again but only because of the noise from the street/bars/nightclubs. Other than that the hotel was great for the price!

What can i say, well let me start by saying i stayed here in 2001 and thought the hotel was wonderful, loved the location, loved the staff and over all thought it was lovely. So when i decided to make a return trip to Bangkok i immediately booked the Viengtai Hotel but this time i was very disappointed. We arrived at the hotel and were told we had been upgraded to an executive suite, which i thought was great because things like that never happen to me, but when we got to the room it was no better than a standard room at any run of the mill hotel, very basic. On my booking i had requested a smoking room with a double bed and away from the street, the room we got was non-smoking and at the front of the hotel facing right on to the street. I wasn’t too bothered about the location of the room because the street was quiet enough. I went back to reception and requested to be moved to a smoking room, i was told there was no smoking in the new part of the hotel and there was no smoking rooms available with a double bed and if i could wait until the morning they would have a double bed put into a standard room. The next morning we packed up our stuff and returned to reception and asked to be moved to our standard room the staff had changed shift and they knew nothing about us moving rooms and just told me there was none available. The staff were very abrupt and just spoke among themselves and left me standing there. Later that evening i returned to reception and requested to be moved to the room i had originally booked and again was told there was none available when i realised i was getting nowhere I then asked to speak to a manager . Once i said this the reception staff began checking the availability again and it appeared that the reason i was not given a standard room was because of the difference in price. The room i had been put in was in a new part of the hotel and was charged at a higher rate but once i requested the assistance of the manager i was given a key for a smoking room. As i said the executive suite we were originally given was very basic and would normally be considered a standard room so when we moved to the standard room it was terrible. This part of the hotel should be closed and i'm sure it is a health hazard. There was an awful smell in the corridor, with huge damp patches all over the floor and the room itself smelt terrible. It looked and felt dirty and old. It was worse than any budget accommodation I have stayed in on a previous backpacking holiday. This hotel has depreciated a lot in 7 years and it was like a totally different hotel, the pictures on the hotel website are extremely misleading and do not resemble the actual hotel. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone and would even suggest sending health inspectors in to do an inspection.

My family was there - 9th March - 11th March 2008.
At the Hotel - Bell boy was very helpful. He (forgot his name) is able to speak Mandarin, Malay etc. The receptionist was friendly. Keep valuable items in the (small) safe box at the reception (Deposit 500 BHT. Returned when check out). Triple Room - Comfortable. Air con adjustable. Drinking water in the room is free (3 bottles). Paper slippers keep tearing. Bathroom - Well equipped with shampoo, tooth brush, tooth paste etc etc though branded as Budget Hotel. Breakfast buffet - starts at 6.30am. Taxis - Before boarding ask for meter fare. Taxi driver find it hard to locate the hotel. Bring along hotel map and address written in Thai (Hotel name card). Many shops around this area. Khao San Road within walking distance. Some handicraft prices are the same as in JJ market. Convenient shop also nearby. Road side hawker food very delicious. (Sticky mango rice was delicious and cheap too 20 BHT only. Siam Paragon selling at 120 BHT). We tried Thai Massage at Senja Spa - what an experience! Explore this area.

This hotel is overpriced mainly because of its location. the rooms are old and smelly. Bathroom was ok, but the rest was a big NO NO.
Old smelly wall to wall carpeting, bed was extremly hard, the worst ive ever slept in. My hip lost sence of feeling because of this. The minibar is mainly some nuts, and some beer.
Breakfast is ok, restaurant is boring.
Location is ok if you like Khao san rd. I personally hate it..its the "whos coolest on khao san..." Khao san was probably cool like 15 y ago, now its just a tourist trap. And young people drinking beer all day.
Dont go there, theres nothing to see.

Horrible stay, would not recommend it. Perhaps they have half the rooms renovated, but ours was not. The room was old and small, the bathroom musty, the furnishings weren t really clean, including the sheets, the bed was old, stained and hard as plywood, the carpet was old, and probably hasn t been vacuumed in a while, the fridge didn t work. 3 days in this hotel was too long. The front lobby looked good and the buffet american breakfast was okay. The only good part was the location, walkable to the Grand Palace and Emerald Buddha, next to Khao San Road and lots of street vendors for shopping. No internet, laundry was expensive, can get it down the road for cheaper. The room key required 500B deposit, and another 500B desposit for a safety deposit box at the front desk. Metered taxi was about 400B on the way in, and 450B on the way out.

We stayed here for 2 nights with our tour group. It's just an average hotel. Location is great because it's near khao san road, the grand palace, and wat arun. It's clean with no frills. It's only worth it to stay here for a short time then move on.

The Viengtai Hotel, Bangkok
August 2007
Trekjunkie5

The location of this hotel is excellent if you don't mind the hustle and bustle of tourists and locals combined. Parallel to the Khao San Road ( one street down ) this hotel was clean, tidy and the staff were really friendly and professional. The rooms were spacious and pretty cheap with the check in desk providing the all important safety deposit box.

The only bad point for me ( apart from being bitten by a large spider ) was that the swimming pool had a bad smell wafting around it. This aside I would recommend it for the semi-budgeting traveller.

Bangkok itself was a great city to visit with plenty of bars/clubs/pubs/resturants to keep me entertained although 4 days and nights was plenty!
