“OK for budget hotel”

We stayed here for 2 nights with our tour group. It's just an average hotel. Location is great because it's near khao san road, the grand palace, and wat arun. It's clean with no frills. It's only worth it to stay here for a short time then move on.

The Viengtai Hotel, Bangkok
August 2007
Trekjunkie5

The location of this hotel is excellent if you don't mind the hustle and bustle of tourists and locals combined. Parallel to the Khao San Road ( one street down ) this hotel was clean, tidy and the staff were really friendly and professional. The rooms were spacious and pretty cheap with the check in desk providing the all important safety deposit box.

The only bad point for me ( apart from being bitten by a large spider ) was that the swimming pool had a bad smell wafting around it. This aside I would recommend it for the semi-budgeting traveller.

Bangkok itself was a great city to visit with plenty of bars/clubs/pubs/resturants to keep me entertained although 4 days and nights was plenty!

I have now stayed at the Viengtai on 4 different occasions - and will be back again in one month's time.

It is in a great location if you want to be in the heart of the backpacker's district of Khoa San, without actually staying on Khoa San Road which is really, really noisy with street bars and clubs pumping out music until the wee hours.

The rooms are a decent size and nicely decorated and furnished - request a room on one of the top floors - they are the refurbished ones. The breakfast is pretty decent too. There is a pool in which to cool off in after your sightseeing/shopping.

They also offer a left luggage service - for 20 Baht a day you can leave a large bag and they will look after it for you. I have taken advantage of this as am now off travelling in Northern Thailand and Laos and didn't want to carry my large backpack with me.

I have stayed in 3 other 5* hotels in Bangkok, but most of them are so far away from the action, that I would much rather stay here - but it really depends on why you are heading to Bangkok in the first place!

  • Liked — Location, location, location - near everything, but not so near that it's noisy.
  • Disliked — Availability is getting more difficult - book ahead.

My husband and I stayed here for four nights at the end of our trip. I think that it was a bit over priced as the room was old and musky. It was safe and excellent location to Grand Palace and Ko San Road! We had a great time!

I booked this place for 2 nights upon my arrival in Bangkok before I decided where I wanted to go next. The location is great - close to grand palace and Khao San Road whilst still being quiet.

The lobby seems very posh with attached restaurant downstairs.

The rooms were below what I would expect from a cheap hotel in the UK. It was dark, musty and could have been cleaner.
However, the beds were comfortable, there was great air-con and a fridge with all sorts in it. The bathroom was adequate and clean.

I will not return to this place for one reason alone - the price. I was paying around 2000B a night and later found accomodation in the area that was of a higher standard in the 500-800B range. Also the restuarant, whilst being good, was way overpriced too. I think this place is one of the only proper hotels in the area and capitalises on that.

If you have to book your first night due to late arrival etc this place is adequate but make sure you move on after that unless you want to just throw money away.

If it's your first trip to Bangkok, the Viengtai Hotel is a perfectly adequate place to lay your head for a night or two, until you find where you really want to stay.

One block north of the freak show that is Kao San Rd., the Viengtai is reasonably priced and offers a serviceable breakfast buffet with Thai and Western options. The rooms are functional. One look at the sad, sorry door locks and you will know not to leave any valuables in your room. The lobby is fairly attractive; upstairs floors, not so much. Frayed carpets, worn this, tatty that.

If you love Bangkok street grub, the Viengtai is smack-dab in the midst of culinary Nirvana. And, it's within easy walking distance of Chinatown, Wat Pho and other attractions.

So, yeah ... o.k. Viengtai. Um ... it'll probably do. At least, for a night.

  • Liked — A decent breakfast buffet
  • Disliked — Worn carpets, general lack of charm or character

If you enjoy being nibbled upon, check into the Viengtai near Bangkok's legendary Khao San Rd. (Tip: to avoid nasty bites, leave the lights on all night - the bugs don't appear until it's dark).
As an added bonus, if you request information at the front desk on reputable tailors, you may find yourself being whisked away in an armored van to Gems Gallery, which touts itself as the world's largest jewelry store. If the guards wielding machine guns at the entrance aren't enough to scare you silly, the sales ladies certainly will. Beware - they may not let you out of the compound without dropping some serious dough.
