Maruay Garden Hotel
Ranked #699 of 879 Hotels in Bangkok
Reviewed December 23, 2012

I had a meeting at the above university and had to stay at Maruay. After reading reviews about this hotel, i was quite dissapointed about my booking.
In fact, my stay was quite pleasant, and the hotel was very decent and fine if I consider what I paid for this stay. The hotel has real signs of aging, but it is very clean, and the personnel very kind , but unfortunately not easy to communicate in English. Ms Siwarin always willing to help. The breakfast was good, but the same for every day of my five day stay. The area is a typical busy suburban area of Bangkok, with all services available including suprmarket (7/11), dentist, restaurants / streetfood, transport. Various busses (26,524,39,59,503) outside the hotel can take you to BTS terminal that goes right into Pentagon shopping / Siam square / central Bangkok for about 2 Euro one way from Hotel. The hotel massage/ spa which is located outside the hotel by the parking lot is not recommended. Try however 'Ban Chomnard Spa' about 30 meters in front of the Hotel for a wonderful Thai massage experience for only 200 Baht/5 Euro/hour!! - (no nonsense real massage).
I always judge hotels according to the money I pay for , and this is a good value for money if one chooses this area to stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at floors 7,8,9 which are the executive floors.

I think that this hotel is ok for the Uni, but if you are not going there, well, go somewhere else. It's rather in need of an update as noted in some of the other reviews. The rooms are ok (level 2 star I would say). The breakfast is ok too, but nothing special really. We were meant to stay for 3 nights but as my meeting had finished, we moved to another hotel in the centre. Be aware that the massages next to the hotel are not just that but if you decline the offer, there is no problem, just can be bit shocking if you are not used to this kind of thing.

Maruay Garden is about 30-45 minutes from Suvarnabhumi Airport in moderate traffic. It costs about 385 baht to get there (~USD10), including highway tolls (you pay for this yourself). Make sure the taxi meter is on. Taxis are aplenty at Level 1 of the airport. It's directly opposite Kasertsat University, if the taxi driver is in doubt.

It's a decent, affordable hotel. Clean, rooms, functioning amenities. The staff are helpful and the buffet lunch are ok. Don't expect a 5 star establishment, because it's not.

It's a little out of the way for shopping and sightseeing. It's more like a hotel for meetings, workshops, etc., which is exactly what I was here for. But, if you hop on a cab from the hotel and head for Major Ratchayothin, roughly 3km down the road, you get to the nearest cineplex, with loads of very decent food places and a small suburban cluster of stalls selling clothes and such. It's literally one straight line down the road.

The reviews I read before I got here were mostly mediocre. So I expected the worst. But really, it's decent enough.

Am planning to head down to the city for some shopping tomorrow night. Let's see how I fare. More soon!

Just don't bother. The location is far from anywhere of any interest, unless you have business in nearby government offices (as I did). However, in disgust, I checked out after just two nights. Mould in the bathroom, dirty rooms, fixtures and fittings that don't work or explode on contact, and a shower that barely functions and alternatively shoots out ice cold or boiling hot water with no warning. Combine this with prostitutes running amok and all-night noise, and it adds uip to a pretty unsavoury place. The staff speak no English, the food is absolutely terrible (and usually not what is ordered off the menu), and service is so curt and rude as to be almost non-existent. And this is all from someone who usually has the patience of a saint, and is well-used to staying in some real dives. This is one of the worst yet!

The wife (Thai) booked it as we had a function to go to nearby.
When I went to check in the price I was charged was 400Baht more expensive than originally quoted. The reason for the price increase because I was a westerner. I am used to double pricing having lived in Thailand for more than 10 years, but this is the first time I have heard of it for hotels. The increase though not sounding much was a 25% increase.

After trying to get the price quoted & getting nowhere we just accepted it, and then they informed us that the hotel had no power & would be off most of the day. The lifts did work, but that was about it.
Not able to stay in the room and relax as there was no aircon decided to spend a few hours by the pool. Part of the pool is roped off, it appears as though people were entering the pool in the shallow area, not noticing it was quite a steep slope and looked dangerous. There is a small hut next to the pool either for serving drinks or issuing towels, though this appears not to have been used in a while & it’s not possible to get service whilst by the pool.

Back to the room & still no power, getting ready for a night function, the shower had two options cold or scolding hot & no in between, so cold showers for all.
When we returned on the night we finally had power, for 7 hours that we were there it was off so no idea how long it had been off. Turned on the TV to relax & had approx 6 stations, 1 BBC news, a sport channel with Thai commentary, 1 Japanese I assume & the remainder where Thai so no choice for a traveler.
A good selection for breakfast both western & Thai, although all food served was cold & gave up waiting for coffee to be served so served myself even though there were only 2 other people in the room this early in the morning.

The hotel is isolated, unless working nearby, for tourists it has nothing to offer, a 15-20 minute taxi ride to either Sky train or underground. Same distance for a decent shopping mall.

The only positive is that the staff was friendly. Would definitely not stay here again, a 45-50 minute taxi ride back towards Sukhumvit would be a better option.

As soon as you walk in the door of this hotel, you realise it is going to be disappointing. The staff are not particularly helpful or friendly and even the lobby is not well maintained. The rooms are no better, poor quality, dusty, mouldy and never maintained. Several things were not working properly. The hotel was not cheap at B1600 a night and everything seemed to cost more money, nothing was included - I couldn't even get an iron! This hotel was selected for me by the company I was visiting and I had to kindly request that they recommend somewhere else. It is not set up for western visitors and I would not recommend it to anyone travelling to Bangkok for work or pleasure. It is not near anything and you will not enjoy it. I hope domestic visitors to Bangkok find it better and it is located near the Don Muang Airport (now used for domestic flights). But I can't recommend it, it was overpriced and unpleasant.
