I visit the Atlanta as regularly as I can.
My first visit was over 20 years ago!
The ambience remains the same however, the rooms have recently been updated and although still simply furnished, the beds are comfy with new mattresses, the new European style bathrooms are über clean and the owner of the Atlanta still manages to keep the prices at budget level.
This is a family run hotel with strong family values.
People who like animals and recognise how many suffer on the streets of Asia, will be delighted to see that the Atlanta Hotel has been quietly rescuing mostly cats, but sometimes dogs, from an otherwise certain awful fate. Rescued cats of all ages are nurtured back to health and reside in the staff quarters in the hotels grounds. They are let out into the gardens on a rotational basis where they enjoy catching some sun or lazing on a chair. The hotel has rescued and cared for 100's of animals over the years.
This is no mean feat as veterinary help and medicine is spare and very expensive in Thailand. The owners of the hotel do their very best to help as many as they can and often there can be over 50 being cared for at one time.
As an animal lover myself and also, having seen some atrocities whilst visiting Thailand, I always make a conscious effort to leave a donation towards the cats upkeep or bring basic veterinary treatment like flea/ wormer which is so much cheaper overseas. Any little helps.

This hotel ticks all the boxes for me.

It is very reasonably priced, clean and safe, a little quirky with plenty of character, has a tremendous restaurant, wireless internet access, a wealth of interesting guests that do not include the sex tourists, an in house travel agency, staff that treat you like family and if you want, a cat to sit on your lap to really make you feel at home!

The Atlanta now has it's own website for Internet bookings. This is a busy hotel do you need to book in advance to secure lodgings.

I look forward to visiting the Atlanta every time I'm in Bangkok. A stay at the Atlanta is like stepping back in time. The rooms are very modest, but still a value for the price. The restaurant is the real draw. It's a great place to get away from the Bangkokness of Bangkok. You can read from an extensive collection of periodicals, write or work in an inspiring environment, and take a break to take a dip in the oldest hotel pool in Thailand. And the food is amazing. The place has a ton of history, charm and even some acerbic moralism. It's not for everyone, but if you can deal with modest accommodations and a staff that doesn't ask you if you want a "message" every time you enter the lobby, this might become your favorite hotel - it has for me.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the rooms with the new bathrooms.

The Atlanta was what it said on the tin - great Art Deco foyer, friendly, helpful staff and good cheap food and drink. Wi-Fi in the public areas, which did get very warm as no AC. The room was tired, but everything worked, though there was no hot water.
The cat was lovely, and made me feel quite at home

At the very beginning when I wanted to book a hotel but was not sure that will come to Bangkok on time, Atlanta's reservations were very helpful. E-mail contact was immediate and very professional. Due to lack of double rooms for our first night we were placed in Twin Room. This room was very old and its bathroom as well (no hot water), but in fact it was clean. Just very very old. But for the second night we were moved to double room with king bed, it was much smaller but the bathroom was renovated so we cannot complain about it. Pricing in this hotel is just pleasant :) The restaurant and lobby are very climatic. You can see the tradition in this hotel, what we really liked. Restaurant was also at very low prices, but food and staff really impressed us. Location is also very good, 5 minutes to the main street and Skytrain station. Free wireless internet available in the lobby and restaurant.
If you are looking for budget place to sleep and eat in basic standard this is a place for you.

Room Tip: Better take room with double bed and a/c. They are renovated.

I have a business in Asia the past few years. During the trip I have been using this hotel in Bangkok. Hotel rooms are clean. And also affordable prices. Staff are friendly and pleasant to spend the time.

A funky art deco lobby, and lots of potential that's for sure. I've stayed here on and off for the past 7 years ... but I've stayed my last time this past Sept. There's just so much more that Bangkok has to offer for the same price - I'd even pay double if they just put some effort into running the place.

The washroom renovations on the top floor are a start - but the rooms are in desperate need of a make over. Threadbare sheets, no tv, no fridge, no nice pillows, no pictures, no bottles of water, no wi-fi ... nothing. a room with a metal bed and small desk thing.

The pool needs a complete reno - 1/2 the tiles are broken or missing (and I thought it was bad in 2009). The garden needs to be looked after and thinned out - this ain't a jungle we are looking for. The restaurant - while the food is good - serving the same menu for the past 30 or 40 years?

There's so much potential here, but they just let the place slowly rot away. The staff is pretty lack luster ... no friendly 'sawadee ka', no smile, no nothing ... from the lot of them. The girl who was behind the desk seemed irritated that I interrupted her from combing her hair when I tried to pay for the room. etc, etc, etc ...

a sad decline.

I´ve been staying at the Atlanta on and off for the past 20 years .
Always enjoyed the comfortable beds, the pool, tropical garden and the restaurant ,
the unchanged 50´s architecture ,the selection of nice guest
( and refusal of unpleasant.visttors )
The bathrooms secially on C and D floor were a bit out of time ,
clogged drains , low water pressure...
This has been changed
New German quality piping ,
powerful hot 6 cold showers ,
modern non slip floor tiles,
strong exhaust fans,
new toilets ,wash basins and nice modern tiles.
I must say "The loveliest bathroom , I have experienced in a budget hote l"
Even the rooms have received a make over.
Thanks for ttis price wworthy oasis in BKK !

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The historic Atlanta Hotel in Bangkok is, literally, untouched by modern pop culture. Walking into The Atlanta is like walking into another world, a long lost world. Most of what a guest sees and hears is old and classic - and authentic. ***The Atlanta Hotel in Bangkok, founded in 1952, features many superlatives, notably, the most photographed and oldest unaltered hotel lobby in Thailand, the first hotel swimming (diving) pool in Thailand, the largest selection of Thai vegetarian dishes in the world, a unique jungle-like garden right in the middle of Bangkok. The western menu features dishes made in the 1950s style - dishes that were on the original menu of The Atlanta, and prepared in the same way. ***The historic Atlanta Hotel in Bangkok has strict policies: sex-tourists, drug users, trouble-makers, and undomesticated people are not welcome. Any of these found on the premises are dealt with summarily. Because of these strict policies, The Atlanta Hotel has many detractors or even enemies. The Atlanta Hotel upholds its principles and policies without compromise. As of 1st September 2013, smoking will no longer be permitted anywhere on the premises. ***The Atlanta Hotel is also home to destitute cats and terrapins. Injured and abandoned cats seem to find their way to The Atlanta. Many are rescued from elsewhere. There are at the time of writing 36 cats. Some live in an enclosure on one side of the garden; others live in the staff section of the hotel. The terrapins are all rescued and saved from loss of habitat. There are at the time of writing 27 terrapins. They live well in and around the pond of the jungle-like garden of The Atlanta. Two staff are employed full-time to look after the animals, and visiting vets often volunteer their services, which The Atlanta welcomes. There is a celebrated drawing by a regular guest of The Atlanta of the lobby featuring cats lying on the round sofa. The caption reads (in Italian), "Cats, the real guests of The Atlanta." Guests of The Atlanta are typically animal lovers. *** The Atlanta, being at the bottom of a lane, has no passing trade. All our guests are either regulars or friends of regulars. The Atlanta has many returning guests who have been coming to The Atlanta since the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and, of course, much later. ... more   less
