Reviewed February 17, 2014

stayed at this hotel as part of a fam trip, rooms are massive, very clean and with great amenities, breakfast is huge and can be taken outside in front of the river, excellent meeting facilities and a lovely pool area, staff are very helpful
I would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Thailand.

We found this a good place to stop for the city break. Wouldn't want to stay more than 3 nights. As with all cities we tend to cram in the sight seeing and trips. deluxe room very nice Thai staff as always very courteous polite and most welcoming. Recommended !!

Thailand is one of the few countries in the world where 5-star hotels are somewhat affordable. We've taken advantage of this to stay at 3 different 5-star hotels in Thailand (Peninsula in Bangkok, Sofitel in Krabi, and now Shangri-La in Bangkok.) Because there are a lot of 5-star hotels in Bangkok that can be had for $125 and up, when I look at Shangri-La's price which is a mid-high-range (~$200/night), I do expect a certain standard, which was not met.

Specifically, here are the 2 things that happened during our stay that made me remove 1 star from the rating. I think it boils down to staffing:

1) There was no shampoo and conditioner in our bathroom when we checked in. Basically, our toiletries were not correctly stocked, which is pretty disappointing for a 5-star hotel because this is the "easy" stuff. When I called the reception, they sent up bath wash and a razor (these were also missing), but no shampoo/conditioner. So I showered and washed my hair in bath gel, which I thought was very odd -- like a 3-star European hotel. I later sent an email asking about the shampoo situation, and the management very nicely corrected this the following day by apologizing in person, a beautiful flower arrangement, and a very sincere card. And of course, some shampoo and conditioner. At that point, I was borderline 4.5 / 5 stars about this hotel.

2) On our last day, we went to the pool. It was extremely crowded at 4 pm. We walked around for 5 minutes trying to find chairs. It was self-serve -- clean someone else's towels up, put down your own, go ask for your own water. We ordered a beer, and had to go find someone to do it. Not quite the five-star experience like in Sofitel where there is enough staff to come ask if you want a drink. I'd expect better service, especially when the beer isn't cheap. There were a lot of kids in the pool, and kids = pee. Other places we've been to have separate areas for kids and adults, this pool was pretty much completely dominated by kids , it was noisy and the water was cold, and so we didn't feel like dipping in. We had planned to spend the rest of our day there, but weren't enjoying ourselves, so instead we left early and got cheap massages. This is during the protests, so I'd hate to see what it's like during full season when things are 'normal'.

The staff is nice and mean well, but for the first situation, they lacked experience, and for second situation, they were understaffed.

What is great about this place: good signage to Shangri La when walking around, staff was very nice in getting a metered taxi for a obscure destination (you may not be so lucky with airport), the scent/smell in the lobby is fabulous and calming, they have a good kids' club (good for families, not so good for couples), great bathtub that fills up fast, free wi-fi that was fast and no login id so you can connect multiple machines, close to the BTS (especially if you walk through the old krupthrep wing, it's an airconditioned walk), free checkout at 4 pm.

There are a lot of good things about this hotel, but next time we will try another 5-star hotel that's a bit cheaper because it wasn't "perfect enough" to justify the price.

Room Tip: We stayed in the cheapest room category, and had a small view of the river.

Spotlessly clean, gleaming marble floors, well run and managed, friendly staff, immense buffet breakfast. Occupancy rate dropped from 80 percent
to 50 percent during current political troubles, much better than many hotels in the city, down to just 20 percent occupancy. Very convenient for sky train . Excellent and comfortable rooms. A fine example of a well run hotel.

Shangrila is certainly one of the best in Bangkok, service is good, location great, very big and good breakfast buffet with nice seating at the river terrace. Good Thai food restaurant - even so quite expensive, but good quality. Pool at the terrace is nice, even so too few deck beds when hotel is well booked. De luxe rooms spacious with balcony, but furniture and carpets quite worn down, needs renovation to be a first player in this upgrade category.

Just returned from 4 nights in a lovely riverview room in the main wing. The room was clean, the view spectacular and the daily fresh fruit especially welcoming. The pool area is lovely, with complementary fresh fruit and cold water offered each day. Hotel staff were consistently smiling, respectful and kind. The surf & turf dinner buffet was delicious and beautifully presented, though a large table with some impatient, poorly parented young children made for a less than relaxing evening. Not sure why the hotel couldn't have insisted the children remain seated at their table rather than running around the room. Our main complaint is that the hotel does a poor job of communicating some of their nice offerings. For example, there was a beautiful fireworks display easily viewed from the hotel that we happened upon at the tail end. Would have like to know about it. The same is true for a weekend high tea with dancing in the lobby which we assumed was a private party. The only other issue we had was that we hired a private guide through the concierge for a half day tour. It was quite pricey, and due to the traffic only saw sites for two hours and sat in traffic the rest of the time. Obviously the traffic is no one's fault, but we later learned that we should have had a guide accompany us on public transportation and would have seen much more than we did. That would have been welcome advice.
