“Krungthep Wing worth every penny”
Reviewed June 16, 2013

We stayed here in May 2013. Wedecided to pay the extra supplement to stay in the exclusive Krungthep wing of the hotel - it's worth every penny. The complimentary services are:

Upgraded L'Occitane toiletries in the room
Free soft drinks from the minibar in the room
Balcony with river view (the main wing rooms don't have balconies)
Soft drinks all day in the lobby bar and by the pool
Exclusive use of a quieter swimming pool with a deck overlooking the river
Afternoon tea (buffet style or the full tea stand)
2 hours of cocktails with hot and cold canapés
Dedicated reception area that never gets busy
Breakfast in exclusive surroundings (much quieter than the main wing)
More staff for a totally personal and top notch service
Butler service, with fresh fruit and biscuits brought to the room each evening

In summary, this hotel is spectacular. It's well located for public transport and one of the nicest hotels we have ever stayed in. Book it - you will not regret it.

Room Tip: Rooms further away from the busy main road are quieter.

In Bangkok, the river is pretty much the center of things. All things swank and swish are by the side of the river. And this hotel sure is one of them! It's a huge 20 something story tower standing next to the river offering spectacular views of the riverfront and Bangkok city.

The check-in was a breeze. We were there as a part of a large group for a company conference. My room was on the 11th floor just above the entrance to the hotel, with the river off to the left and the vista of Bangkok (impossibly tall buildings rising straight out of impossibly congested neighborhoods) in front of me.

The room was a twin-bed room and had all the comforts (large flat-screen LCD, minibar etc.etc.) that you can expect out of a 5 star accommodation.

I was particularly thrilled that they had an Indian chef who put together an authentic Indian lunch for me. Other than that as a vegetarian I didn't really venture out to eating Thai foods out there.

The breakfast is at their restaurant which is right next to the river and the pool and is a lavish affair.

The staff was courteous and helpful, and did everything they could to ensure our stay was pleasant.

We stayed here a week, in 2 different rooms, one in the Krungthep Wing, and one in the normal part of the hotel.
Although the Krungthep Wing had its advantages - bigger room, 24 hour butler service etc, the normal hotel part was actually quieter because it is further away from the bridge going over to the other side of the river.
Gluten free eating was actually more of a problem than we had anticipated. Thai food in Australia is mostly GF (I am coeliac) except for a handful of soy sauce based stir fries and sometimes when meat is marinated/tenderised in soy - but we found the knowledge of the chefs and restaurant staff were very touch and go in regards to what gluten was, and what I could eat. I ended up eating very few things, and when I ate something new I was scared that it would not be GF!
We ate one night next door at the Mandarin Oriental, and it couldn't have been a starker contrast - every staff member knew what I could and could not eat, the gluten free bread served to me with dinner was actually edible, and I did not have to do an ounce of explaining before I ordered or ate.
We also used the spa which had a good range of treatments and not too expensive.

Stayed here for three nights before joining a cruise and this was organised for us as by Princess Cruises. We were not disappointed. Our room was on the 21st floor and had wonderful views down the River and overlooked the pool area. The room itself was large and spotless. Lovely selection of toiletries available and big fluffy robes and slippers. Huge comfy bed and very quiet corridor. Complimentary water was available as well as free wi-fi. Had room service one night and it was very well presented and fresh. Breakfast had an amazing choice and it was lovely sitting on the terrace looking at life on the river. All staff were very helpful and eager to make our stay as perfect as possible. Would definitely stay here again if we come back to Bangkok.

Room Tip: Definately get a River View.

Had a wonderful 4night stopover in Bangkok at this hotel. Glad we chose the rooms in the Krungthep wing not least for the quieter more intimate atmosphere whether through its own entrance or at the dining and lounge room or around the pool and riverside area. It was only on the last day that we walked around to the main hotel building ( the staff there in the business centre were excellent in helping us get a quote for despatching items back to the UK) and was struck by the size of the public areas.
with the Shagrila everything has been thought about and then provided and it all works. Very comfortable bed, fine quality sheets and pillow cases, tons of hot high pressure water in the bathrooms, tea and coffee etc etc. We had a very early departure time and they provided breakfeast to our room at no extra cost.
Can echo all the other positive comments about the hotel from other TAs.
Would only add that the service from all the staff you meet is of such high level that elevates a stay here as memorable. Can highly recommend.

Did appreciate the view from our high floor and on the up river end rather than next to the road bridge end. Room had a balcony which was nice to stand out on and take in the air and river view.

My wife and I stayed in the Krungthep Wing for four days last week on our way back to Australia from a trip to Europe.

We were looking for a place to relax and unwind after a hectic few weeks.

We chose this hotel based upon the reviews on Tripadvisor.

Everything has been said. This hotel met, and surpassed, all of our expect ions based upon the reviews we had read.

The service from the moment we were collected at the airport to our departure was perfect. More importantly, the warmth and hospitality of every single member of staff we came into contact with us truly sincere and unpretentious. Ammy our butler, Sorn with drinks around the pool and Krungthep wing manager Gwen rate a special mention.

Our room was large, clean and had all the amenities you could possibly want, with a great view of the river. We tried a number of the restaurants and enjoyed them all especially the Next2 buffet for dinner.....great value. The Chi Spa was also excellent.

If you are looking for a hotel in Bangkok that ticks all the boxes look no further than the Krungthep Wing at the Shangri-La. We will plan our next trip just so we can sample the exceptional hospitality so as soon as possible.

We just can't overstate how impressed we were.

Room Tip: Room 961 in the Krungthep Wing was perfect for us.

We have been staying at the Shangri-La on business/vacation trips for over ten years and it never disappoints. There is sometimes the odd ‘glitch’ along the way but the staff are friendly, attentive and provide excellent service.

We choose to stay in the Krungthep Wing as we enjoy the more peaceful aura of this side of the hotel, plus time out on our balcony watching the world float down the Chao Praya river. Our selected package comes with breakfast (with a good selection on offer), afternoon tea overlooking the manicured gardens and cocktails in the early evening plus access to the private pool for afternoon relaxing in the shade. As with other TripAdvisor reviewers, we also like to use the larger pool in the mornings which has less shady options.

We noticed several updates this year from the newly upholstered chairs in the Riverside Lounge, more food options (still need a couple more vegetarian ones and also suggested to the staff that the current ones by labelled when vegetarian) at the cocktail hour and changes to decorations along the exterior walk between the two wings. We also understand that rooms in the Krungthep Wing may undergo some more changes in the near future – one good one is that the very bulky tv/cabinets have now been replaced with flat screens.

The location of the hotel is, for us, excellent being only a short walk to the Saphon Taksin BTS stop (only two stations to my husband’s office), right on the river side for watching the world go by and there are always plenty of taxis and tuk-tuks on offer in the roads just outside. Better prices will be negotiated outside the hotel :-).

The only area that does not seem to have changed is the service in the raised deck area at the Next2 café. As before, sitting in this area seems to be outside the service radar of the staff working in the café and generally entails walking to the other seated area to obtain their attention.

We would also like to see a small more intimate bar area in the Krungthep Wing for drinks both inside and outside the cocktail 'hour'. Whilst there is the Long Bar in the other wing, this is quite large, more impersonal and often overly air-conditioned. There was (allegedly) a musician in the Riverside Lounge, however, as he was only there for an hour on our first night and sick on subsequent visits, we completely missed him.

Other than that, it is always lovely to return, be welcomed by staff hitting the Gong at the door, and being taken to a lovely room. The Shangri-La is always our hotel of choice in Bangkok.
