Shangri-La Hotel,Bangkok
Ranked #22 of 887 Hotels in Bangkok
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed March 17, 2013

After several visits, we have settled on the Shangri-La as the best hotel for us in Bangkok. For anyone travelling within the city, its location is unchallenged: across the road from the Skytrain and river boat services (access from both hotel wings using the third floor). For a city-centre hotel, the Shangri-La has that essential quality of spaciousness, both inside the comfortable lobby area, and externally alongside the Chao Phraya river and around the pool. The bedroom and bathroom were equally comfortable (river view advised), and the service excellent in every possible way, including in-room check-in. Altogether a 5-star standard-setter.

Room Tip: we had a river-view room fairly high (8th floor), not near the elevators (quiet)

We stayed in the Krungthep wing to celebrate our honeymoon and my birthday and from the second that we walked in the door the staff was incredibly friendly and nice. There was breakfast, afternoon tea and evening drinks, which were great. The staff really went out of their way to be helpful. The room was fantastic. The pool area was nice as well. The hotel is conveniently located on the subway line, so it is easy to get to other parts of the city without taking a taxi (traffic can make this incredibly slow). I highly recommend this hotel.

The Shangri-La is truly a 5-star hotel under any definition. Traveling down the river to different locations is the best way to go in Bangkok - and it's easily accessible. The facility was truly elegant- from the marble to the orchids. The staff was incredibly helpful and friendly. The poolside bar had wonderful food and drinks and gracious servers. In all of our years of travel, we would rate this one of the best hotels we've ever stayed in and would highly recommend it for its beauty, location and quality of service.

Room Tip: Concierge service very helpful.

My first stay at a Shangri-La property, and was not at all disappointed. The river facing location, a little off the hustle and bustle of the city life, the sky train station located very close to the hotel, makes it a very good location overall. The buffet breakfast had a very good spread, the lunch and dinner made available during the 3 day conference was also good. Staff was very courteous and helpful, check in and check out was very well managed considering the size of group that I was travelling with. The conference and breakout rooms in the hotel were fantastic. Would recommend this hotel to anyone travelling to Bangkok on business or pleasure.

Room Tip: For a great view, chose a river facing room.

We stayed in the Krungthep wing . This hotel is all about luxury, the staff are welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. Krungthep wing riverside lounge provided all of our dining needs during our very short stay and our spacious room overlooked the river. Local fruit, fresh cookies provided in room, our bed was comfortable, and the bathroom large, with seperate bath and L'occitaine toiletries provided. Poolside, we used both pools on the property, the Krungthep WIng pool is sedate, while the larger pool serving the main hotel is where the action is. We took a tour on the river around sunset with the hotel's private boat and treated ourselfs to some spa treatments in their inhouse spa. . Take note that the Krungthep wing has it's own reception - we weren't aware and had our taxi drop us at the main reception which is a bit away from Krunghtep. It wasn't a problem, the hotel provided us and our luggage with transport over to the right area in their in house buggy. We would have loved our visit to be longer. We would definately return to the Shangri-La Bangkok

Room Tip: Request a river view.

If its your first time in the city, we took a recommendation from some friends who work in the Bangkok and booked this hotel.
They said it was perfect for the sky train, river boats and all the attractions and sights of Bangkok.

If you get the opportunity, go for a room on the higher floors, we were on the 5th floor of the kungthrop wing, and our friends were on the 11th - I preferred their view of he river and city.

We went for the slightly more expensive Kungthrop wing, as the afternoon tea, drinks at the pool and cocktail hours appealed to us and we weren't disappointed. However there is a lot more going on in the main hotel so you need to be aware of what's going on so that you don't miss anything.

Room service is excellent, toiletries in the bathrooms replenished frequently and nice fruit bowls and treats daily.

We ate on our first night at the Thai restaurant on the watersedge great restaurant, good food and friendly staff. Well worth a visit.

Only tip for people looking to stay on the better side of the river, check if they have any big conferences on as these groups tend to monopolise the facilities, pools and restaurants.

Finally, this is a great hotel for tourists wanting a top quality hotel in the right position for transport links and all the additional benefits seasoned travellers come to expect and appreciate.

If visiting the city again, I'll have no hesitation of booking in here again.

We had four nights in this hotel out of our 3 week holiday around Thailand and really enjoyed our stay. I have never had a breakfast buffet in a hotel as good as this one, it was comparable to a 5* cruise where every conceivable option is available. Breakfast is lovely on the terrace watching the mad river traffic pass and feeding the enormous amount of fish in the water. Our room was river facing and would advise you to have one, because the view the other way i don't think is inspiring. Hotel drinks are expensive - but their tom-yum mojito is wonderful! My husband is a gym fanatic and he said their gym was good. Close to the skytrain which we used. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend this hotel
