“My favourite hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 16, 2013

This was my eighth stay, I think, and it's become my favourite hotel because of the comfort, riverside location, and friendly service. The new gym is a great upgrade and the Italian restaurant is reliable. The highlight is always the buffet breakfast on the riverside terrace. It's not cheap but it's a real treat.

Room Tip: Deluxe river view room is worth the few dollars extra if it's up high.

Great location, right by the river taxi and the monorail. The hotel also has its own river taxi. lots of local restaurants round the hotel as well. Ask for a corner room facing the river it has amazing views and you can lay in the bath and look up the river.

This report relates to the KRUNGTHEP WING of the hotel.
We had spent a couple of weeks in Myanmar and wanted a luxurious, pampered end to our vacation before returning home. We did not get it!
The first problem was that the hotel has the noisiest toilets I have ever come accross, bar one, and that was a concrete, floating hotel in 1994 in Saigon which had vacuum conveniences.
We were woken up on average 3 times in the first two nights by neighbours going about their business.
The other problem related to the fact that the hotel was full in the run up to Chinese New Year. Frankly at breakfast, afternoon tea and cocktails in the evening, the waiting staff and the space available could not cope. One finished up 'foraging' for items like sugar from nearby tables, eating in arm-chairs with plates perched on one's lap, waiting for food and drinks to arrive, not the standard to which the hotel aspires and promises.
On the day before we left, things had calmed down a bit and the service improved, but even then it did not reach the standards and the attentivemess we had expected.
Apart from this, the rooms themselves were very good, the lobby impressive and the staff at reception extremely helpful and working to the highest professional standard.

Room Tip: As far away as possible from the bridge end to avoid road and train noise.

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights on our first trip to Thailand. After looking at the Mandarin and the Penninsula, we booked the Krungthep wing at the Shangri-la not knowing there was a difference besides a balcony on the river. We went to check in at the main Shangri-la lobby, but were told we were in the wrong place, so they promptly had a hotel tuk-tuk drive us around to the Krungthep Wing where we were welcomed with a gong a cold towel and a fresh flower ring. The room was very nice, clean and comfortable as we would expect. Our butler arrived with welcoming drinks and bags followed shortly thereafter.
Location was perfect: hotel has its own boat shuttle service to a few locations on the river, but it is also right next to the Central Station for the Chao Phraya Express river taxi and the BRS sky train station. So convenient when trying to get around! I kept seeing the Peninsula taxi boat across the river and was glad for not having to rely on that to get to the next mode of transportation all the time.
A beautiful breakfast buffet was available each morning (fruit, pastries, cheese, meat, juice, cereal, vegetables/salad bar, a selection of hot plate items like congee, dim sum, noodles and the ability to order custom eggs with sausage and bacon) -- so many choices and all were fresh and well-presented. Afternoon tea also included snacks like canapés but we were never around at that time and the happy hour had your choice of cocktails and enough hordes' oeuvres to make you cancel your dinner plans if you couldn't restrain from trying just a taste of each. Also fresh & well-presented.
Service from the hotel staff and buffet area was friendly and attentive, but the pool-side service was slow at best. Pool is nicer at the main Shangri-la wing. Gym facilities were fantastic. It had a wide selection of new equipment, the staff kept it very clean, it was well lit with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the pool and river (too many hotels hide the gym in a windowless dungeon) it was well stocked with water, towels and headphones if you forgot yours. The locker rooms had all the amenities of a spa (steam, jacuzzi, sauna, showers, toiletries) and the staff were friendly and helpful.
Overall, the Krungthep wing at the Shangri-la was an excellent value due to the facilities, service, location and all the "inclusives" (Breakfast, tea, happy hour and all non-alcoholic drinks from the mini bar or the lobby bar) that many high end and high priced hotels try to nickel and dime you for.

Came back to this hotel in December 2012 after two years (we actually preferred the Conrad), because of a seminar taking place at the hotel. It was a wonderful experience, starting with a smooth check in. Nice, big and spotlessly clean room with river view. Good bathroom anemities.
Fitness center was under reconstruction, but the alternative was sufficient.
Location close to the Thaksin sky train station is a big plus.
Pool gets a bit crowded in the afternoon.
Sumptuos breakfast at Cafe Kool is a really cool way to start your day. Like this place (sitting outside) so much that I also went there in the evening.
3 days went by too fast, late check out was no problem and the door man gave me a nice fare well.Staff is wonderful and I will be back with my family !

Room Tip: Get a room with view of the river, will immediately relax you !

My partner and I just stayed at Shangri-la (krungthep wing) for 4 nights. Overall the hotel caters for all guests needs namely, fantastic service, with a team always willing to help. Loved the special treats as the afternoon tea and the cocktail. In regards to the location, is very easy to get anywhere. The hotel has shuttle service to the asiatique and rivercity. If you are keen to use the sky train (BTS), there is one station a few meters away from the hotel.
